LG are seeking display notch feedback and rumors show the LG G7 may have one!

I don't have a problem with the notch. At all. As long as it's implemented properly. I think people are getting to upset over something trivial.

Just wait until one of these android phones with snitch actually sell though... well know it soon enough since Apple will sue them :P

Only Samsung is brave enough to do their thing and that's mostly why they dominate the android space.

They won't get sued, because you can slightly alter the shape and likely get around the patent.

Samsung dominates mostly because of marketing. Huawei really isn't that far behind them.

and here's why Samsung dominates the smartphone space: they don't blindly follow the competition

EDIT: LG searching for confirmation in implementing the Notch, reddit thread completely opposed to it, proceeds to release the G7 with a notch. Logic.

Samsung dominates because of the extreme amounts of money that go into marketing.

As a hater of the notch trend, if you HAVE to have one, do it like LG does it by blending it in with the top bar, essentially making it invisible.

Do it any other way and you have a Fisher Price phone.

Totally agree. At least on most Android phones you actually have space for notifications beside the notch...
Or can disable the time indicator.

The only problem is that with more battery comes either a chunkier phone or an almost phablet like thing. Unless of course we develop batteries that can produce ample power whilst not draining too fast.

Not at all. My Zenfone 3 Zoom has a 5000mah battery, and it's under 8mm thick. Easily lasts 2 days of heavy use.

You know, getting rid of the front camera may help a bit... I never use it, and it takes up space. I'd goals give it up to not have a stupid notch. Freaking fad statement... I like them trying to maximize screen usage, but come on..

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not :P The selfie cam is one of the most widely used cameras on smartphones.

I'm more upset on the fact that it is sort of becoming something that's just fashionable in the eyes of handset makers. Now notches aren't new for LG. The LG V20 for example had a notch before Apple somehow made it popular. And while it was rather quirky, you sort of understood it's purpose in being there. When you look at devices like the new ASUS Zenphone 5, you just have to wonder, why did you have to do that ASUS? Then you put the dual camera lens vertically alone the left side, exactly the same position as the iPhone X.

Nooooooo notches, less is more, less bezel, no notch, see how that works? Last 4 devices have all been LG(Nexus 4, G3, G4, G6), but I may have to jump ship if they notch it out..

Well Samsung got sued for way less remember. Apple isn't suing right now because there is no market share to tax really.

Samsung dominates outside of China if you prefer. People don't have the same confidence in Huawei building quality and I think that Huawei don't even care that much about the global market since the Chinese one is already gigantic, so theyre not currently trying their best to win the world over.

As for why, they put money in marketing but I don't think they put as much as Apple does. But one reason it does dominate is that they understood that people don't want gimmicky phones. They tried things like those in the past and it didn't catch on. Now they known that if they don't follow blindly Apple, they can keep all their customers who don't want to get milked with wireless headphones and so on.

Maybe a little bit of both? I can believe it's used a lot. People gotta have their duck beaks. I know I'm totally in the minority...

I mean, I guess it can stay, you have to have a spot for the speaker anyways.

Um... don't?

If the reason for the "notch" is to allow space for the camera and speaker, then obviously those things have to be redesigned... Samsung apparently has a patent (I'm sure it was on WAN at one point) where they are working on embedding the camera behind the glass screen. This would help to maximize the screen utilization and still continue to provide user functionality.

If a manufacturer such as Samsung can do this along with trying to do the same thing with other features on that top part of the phone, it'd actually be a good idea since the notch just looks stupid so why not try to embed EVERYTHING into the screen. Though admittedly that could be very difficult and it's quite outlandish.

It is though, it's such a bad UX and not necessary for like different side corner functions like they present. Better just go full display or regular rectangular display.

Well LG had a notch like design before the iPhone X with their V20. ASUS on the other hand with their Zenphone 5, what the hell are they doing over there.

Yeah at least LG is innovative enough to take advantage of that notch space with the second screen on the V20,or just integrating it with the UI instead of making it an obvious "feature" like Apple.

Yep. Mentioned that in an earlier comment. It seemed at the very least LG thought about how it could be part of the user experience, rather than something users would have to work around as it generally just got in the way.

Now I'm probably going to get comments like... "well most don't seem to notice or be bothered by the notch when watching videos". Yea, I know. That's not the problem. The problem is how awkward it is to view stuff that should easily shown at top of the  screen like activation of Do Not Disturb mode, battery percentage, and a whole bunch of valuable information.

Yeah, some definitely use it like that. However take Essential and Asus. Asus is pushing the screen to body ratio to new levels (Samsung is high, but I'm pretty sure their curved screens play a massive part in that, which not everyone is a fan of) and Essential is doing more of the same. You simply can't do that with black bezels at the top. Yes, you can make the phone physically bigger, but I applaud them for trying to fit larger screens in to the same size body. The Note last year was a significant size increase, and honestly made it so I'm much less likely to consider it.

You're kind of right on the camera front though. I mean, I get it to an extent. They've got to position it somehow, and they'll be copying someone regardless of what they do. At least it's a little different unlike the phone pictured above, and they put the flash below the modules. People that point out every little thing are way too picky. Ok, so they put it horizontally on the top left and...copy OnePlus? How about in the middle vertically? Oh, you're copying LG! How about put it more towards the middle but vertically and lower down...oh wait, then they're copying Sony. Like really, get a grip people.

I think Samsung was sued for GUI similarities, not the product itself. Patents are tricky, and you can't really blanket something with them. I guess we'll see though. Huawei cares, they've already said as much, they just don't need the US to make mad profits; it'd just be a nice notch on their belt. Huawei has also had huge success in Europe, it's not just China where they're doing well.

No, Apple spends far less. The graph is older, but shows a pretty clear picture. Screen-Shot-2013-11-05-at-7.29.24-AM.jpg

That's north of 4 billion in 2013. Last year Samsung spent 10.2 billion dollars on marketing. To say they know that people don't want gimmicky phones is also false. Samsung will try pretty much anything. If it doesn't pan out, they don't make it again. That's why they're working on a folding phone. That's why they make a phone with a stylus. The Note line was very much a "throw it on the wall and see if it sticks" device.

It'll be interesting to see how long they keep the headphone jack.

Is that the Mi Mix2? Aside from the very stupid placement and copying of the cameras, it looks pretty nice. I like how they still have an ear piece, as that's something I will never give up. Phones that use the glass to produce the sound, where everyone around you can hear the conversation are just stupid IMO.

Maybe a little bit of both? I can believe it's used a lot. People gotta have their duck beaks. I know I'm totally in the minority...

I mean, I guess it can stay, you have to have a spot for the speaker anyways.

It's just easier to take pictures of yourself or yourself with others. Group shots with friends, family, a setting with you in it and you're alone, etc.

Not to mention all the Vloggers that use it.

Did anybody notice that LG deleted the original post? LOL The subreddit's moderators are pissed.

I'm guessing it was a group (or single) of employees that wanted to know what people thought without the corporate OK.

I mean, this far along in the development cycle I really doubt they're going to change something like that. They've already entirely scrapped the G7 once.

It doesn't need to be done though. Larger screens means less space to actually hold the phone. Which is why I might actually buy a few spare ZX Premiums.

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Haha, just pointing out that simply because you (the collective you, not you you) don't use it that way, doesn't make it irrelevant. ;)

Yeah. I'm a little on the fence about pushing the screen so close to the edges. I don't really see the point. I think the Note5 hit the perfect balance of size and portability. I didn't mind Sony's design language, and even on their newer phones they left a little to hold onto which is nice. Plus the fact the camera is lower in the body makes it easier to take a picture without a finger getting in the way. Then again, I'm also pretty committed to getting the next PKB Blackberry, so I'm in a pretty small niche :P

I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone X was more marketed than the s9. You'd have to remember that Samsung does tablets, laptops, PC monitors, TVs etc. Even in phones they have a much larger product stack. Inherently they are bound to have a larger budget overall, but the actual detail of flagship yo flagship might not be as obvious.

The issues aren't patent issues. They have never been. Simply because those rules are pretty obvious to process. From memory it was a question of brand right or some form of aesthetic copyright. The point was that they got sued for aesthetics only. Those are possibly applicable to the notch as well.

Yes, but considering it's multitudes more than other companies, and even more than many companies total revenues, the statement still holds true.
