LG are seeking display notch feedback and rumors show the LG G7 may have one!

Found this quite interesting while I was skimming through the news on the XDA Labs app. According to Mishaal Rahman over at the XDA forums, LG are seeking feedback on display notches which rather piques my interest as it could mean that the LG G7, which should be launched toward the end of April, might have a display notch. Now I personally am not a fan of all these bezel-less displays, removal of a physical home button, headphone jack removal and notches, but I've noticed that notches are seemingly the mobile trend of 2018, especially after Apple's world class iPhone X, which although is a good handset, is being ditched by many for Samsung's Galaxy S9/S9 Plus. But I digress, Mishaal Rahman manages to obtain this information from (quote after this so that I'm citing what was said on XDA):

Now Mishaal Rahman's view on this is rather interesting to me too, here's what he had to say on the front of the LG notch speculation:

OnePlus’ CEO even took to their forums to defend the decision to implement a notch on the rumored OnePlus 6, and even though the decision makes sense from a design standpoint, it’s something that will take time for consumers to accept. Now here I can see that he finds it quite normal that LG are following the notch trend, going as far as to even mention the speculations about OnePlus' upcoming OnePlus 6 and its display notch. I agree with Mishaal that it makes perfect sense in terms of design and sales for LG to take the notch road with the G7, but do all manufacturers, apart from Samsung and some other phone manufacturers, really have to copy Apple with the display notches? Can't we just have one mobile phone manufacturer that breaks this trend, for the diehards like myself and I'm sure many others who appreciate a very basically designed flagship handset without all of these crazy attempts to fully immerse a user into their device? Hell I still use a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (rooted with android 8.1) purely because I didn't really like the design of handsets after the Galaxy S6 (normal one, not edge). But, as Rahman states in his post on XDA:

I think the notch is ok on SOME devices. I hate it when every single device has a stupid notch. Instead of companies getting stuck on a trend I would like to see them implement their own designs or even go further and just make a bezeless display that takes up the whole front of the phone with features that make up for that,

Still interesting though. Only design I like on LG is the Nexus 5X and I don't think LG even designed that, Google did.

I have no objections on the looks, LG cant seem to design a durable phone though. (see the motherboard issues that has been present since LG G2)

Doubtful, they maintain a higher screen to body ratio without it and without sacrificing decently sized chin bars.

Just wait until one of these android phones with snitch actually sell though... well know it soon enough since Apple will sue them

Only Samsung is brave enough to do their thing and that's mostly why they dominate the android space.

EDIT: LG searching for confirmation in implementing the Notch, reddit thread completely opposed to it, proceeds to release the G7 with a notch. Logic.

Yeah, the notch is an idiotic impractical gimmick. Because that is apparently all Apple are these days. And I'm not alone, the Iphone X is a fiasco.

 

I agree with you here, that is the best implementation, but you still run out of space for icons up there. I'd rather they didn't at all, and put some proper speakers or better cameras up there.

Proper speakers really would be a better idea than a silly notch. It just doesn't look neat at all having a silly little thing hanging on the rest of your screen.

Indeed. I generally feel the same about rounded corners on the screen. Why? You just miss out on stuff, especially if you are watching full screen videos. How dumb. I have an old Galaxy 5 mini, and the batteri is great for like 5 hours. Stupid phone. I want MORE battery. I've seen the galaxy 7? aussie commercial, where some bimbo travels the world using her phone for everything. Great, but irl, her phone would die out after 4 hours of use like that. Give us more battery!

The only problem is that with more battery comes either a chunkier phone or an almost phablet like thing. Unless of course we develop batteries that can produce ample power whilst not draining too fast.

Idk if that is true. Right now the manufacturers are making the phones so thin, they have to remove the audio jack connector. Do we really need the phone to be 1-2 mm thinner? I'd rather have that volume filled with battery. Over most of the surface (- camera, jack and such) + 1-2 mm, that is a lot of volume for additional battery.

Sorry if you misinterpreted there but I was referring to the thin devices that still have the headphone jack (such as older iphones, samsungs, etc).

Ah, sure. I don't want a thick brick in my pants either . But I'd rather have more battery than 1-2 mm thinner phone. Makes no difference. I mean what is the point? A lighter smaller phone? Not if you have to carry a battery bank with you everywhere anyways

 

Faster CPU's and built in nvme ssd's for super snappy usage is much more important than a goddamn notch in the display.

On a straight 16:9 phone, sure.

 

Phones like the S8, S9, and Note 8, the screen is 18.5:9, with navigation 'buttons' and the notification bar losing what was just dead space anyways, leaving a 16:9 area for actual content.

You know, getting rid of the front camera may help a bit... I never use it, and it takes up space. I'd goals give it up to not have a stupid notch. Freaking fad statement... I like them trying to maximize screen usage, but come on..

Someone send that screen to warranty for the dead pixels. It does qualify, it has more than 5 dead pixels in one spot.
