Im actually running a GTX 670 in my build right now and am communicating with a craigslist seller about a GTX 970 for $160, so hopefully that works out. My current build is in my signature.

I got a GTX 960 4gb in one of my computer I bought off Newegg about 2 months ago for 159.00. I got in right before all hell broke loose on the GPU prices.

Well good news is that the craziness seems to be coming to an end. I just visited newegg and there are $300 GTX 1060's and $400 RX580's available, which is still over MSRP but I looked just a few days ago and the RX 580 was $700 and 1060's were over $450. So fingers crossed, we might be seeing decent prices soon.

I hope so. I would go dual GPUs. I never never done it and would like the experience.

Thats a Syquest Drive and a couple of 88mb Cartridges, Theyre basically HDD platters in cartridge format. More popular with older macs and less so PC's, most commonly found with external housings but if you had an internal SCSI card, you could slap one of these into any 5.25" bay.

heathkit.thumb.jpg.1c8ae1402a85840fc3716cfab18ecd37.jpg

Less PC but still old and cool, my Heathkit HW 101 ham radio, from 1982 or 83. Lotsa toobs. Originally manufactured in 1970 and for sale for 13 years, though mine was completed by my grandfather in the early 80's.

ps2.thumb.jpg.73c6102ab76a479318572005b29afb2d.jpg

And then the PS/2, shortly after i brought it home and cleaned it up, due to it being painted steel and not terrible, it didnt yellow over the years. Originally from 1987 with an 8086, 640kb of ram, 20mb HDD and a 720k FDD with 3 8 bit ISA slots its not exactly a powerhouse compared to the rest of the PS/2 lineup, but it was in really good shape and seemingly works fine (though i still after months havent gotten around to getting the proper boot disks for it). This machine also has a very specific lithium battery i cant remember the name of that hadnt exploded, and probably never will, the same ones are supposedly used in satellites and missiles.

If im seeing c2d and g80 stuff in this thread im gonna consider my Dell Precision T3400 "old" at the very least. Its a core2quad Q6600, 8gb of 800mhz DDR2, two quadro fx 4600's, 4 160gb WD Caviars and a 120gb adata sp550 for windows 8.1

Those last two bits arent exactly old but the rest of it is pretty old now, being mainly from 2006/2007.

Oh and i should probably throw this in here, this is my 1997 Thinkpad 380ED. With a 166mhz Pentium MMX, 48mb of ram (upgraded from 16mb), a 1.25mb Neomagic Magigraph 128ZV, 2.1gb 5400RPM HDD, a 12.1" 800x600 FRSTN display (worst screen known to mankind) and Windows 98SE upgraded from 95.

After 21 years the battery still holds 2 hours of charge (thanks NiHM technology, lithium sucks), CD drive and floppy drive are still very functional, PCMCIA slots are good, really theres only two issues with it, one being the screen is showing bright out on the edges because its just an old piece of crap screen, and two is the very corners of the palm rests have some chipped bits.

Also i think it might have had a rear i/o cover but im not 100% sure and i dont wanna dig it out again to look for little hinge holes, ive never seen it with one in any pictures so im not sure if it ever had one at all.

I actually still have one of those Core 2 Quad class machine alive and kicking, running 24/7 as my router/NAS combo machine.

I think I still had the GeForce 2 MX from a previous system. Its RAM sticks too. Too bad I lost all parts to my first system.

If you really go retro, I have a good collection of chips used in the original IBM PC/XT. I do intend to create a clone of that machine for some DOS fun.

Speaking of not knowing what tech is worth, a friend's grandmother accidentally threw out a Norden bombsight because she had no idea what it was when cleaning out the attic. If you don't know what a Norden bombsight is, it's a bombsight used in American World War Two bombers like the B-17. It was very advanced for its day. I think it's worth several thousand dollars today.

I don't know if this will count because I don't own it but the engineering company my dad works for has a CNC machine that has an Intel 486 in it's PLC, though is showing signs of dying as the machine will just randomly stop in the middle of executing a command then start up a few seconds later like nothing happened.

486, especially a clone, isn't worth much at all.  complete systems routinely for $100-$200.  old Macs the same.

used Atari 1040STs are going for good money, $500-$1000.   Commodore amigas run the gamut from $300 to well over $1k.

with the exception of Next machines, the Apple Lisa, breadboard Apple I, nothing is commanding CRAZY money.  yet.

My guess is after ready player one debuts, vintage pc stuff will spike.

I'm not an expert! In fact I'm usually just 1 google search ahead of you.

Getting these cards sorted requires a bit of work since the MX440's fan is cracked and the bearing dried out (the fan still spins sometimes). I have to:

  • Desolder the fan from the PCX5750 cooler that I installed on the FX5500
  • Give my FX5500 back its original cooler, and solder its fan on
  • Desolder the fan pins (which are as weak as the ones that were on the FX5500) on the MX440
  • Solder the fan from the PCX 5750 cooler in place
  • Install the cooler originally bought for the FX5500 (and modified for my 6200A) on the PCX5750.

This will be fun. And I'll be using a TIM identical (if not slightly better) than the original OEM stuff (150g tube FTW)
DSCF1455.thumb.JPG.9c30c6f96d4a23a69792c808224c28e9.JPG

Edit: Turns out that the MX440 is artifacting within Windows 98, and it gets error code 10 with any driver-so its shot and I have to use my Viper V550 with my Pentium III 650.

Still can't believe I got a Pentium II 233+Viper V550+Voodoo2 12MB with SLI&passthrough cables out of nowhere. And the only thing wrong with the desktop was failed caps on the motherboard (which is now working).

I got a PNY 8400GS 1024MB card from a friend's old prebuilt. Kinda strange because it was with an i7 3770, but the motherboard couldn't even support his RX470, so the processor will be sold because he has an AMD system now.

And the 8400GS won't display out of the HDMI, and I forgot to snag a DVI cable from when my school was recycling tech stuff, so I'm not sure if it truly works or not. The fan does spin.

You have no idea how much I want that for my Hackintosh! My 8400GS is only a 512MB model with a dead fan. It overheats instantly, but works out of the box in Mac OS X El Capitan.

I throw away my older computers couple years ago, like my AMD Athlon 64 3200+.  My current oldest computer is my Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600.  It's about 10 years old and it still run perfectly fine for web browsing and data entry.

It is primary used by my wife when she needs to surf online or print coupon for shopping.

I decided to give the computer a new live by upgrading the old mechanical hard drive to a SSD.  Micro Center in USA has a very cheap Inland Professional 240GB SSD for $49.99 so it's a very cheap and most effective upgrade.  Data is not really important, all important data is actually saved into my NAS over the network so I don't really care if this cheap drive going to fail.

The case that houses the Q6600 is the discontinued Cooler Master Elite 330.  After I opened up the case, I realized that cable management wasn't a thing back then (see picture below).  The case itself is not really designed for hiding cables.

IMG_20180317_225041.jpg.a7786409bb36def196ec345293a88851.jpg

One cool thing about this case is that there's this little tunnel specially designed for the CPU intake fan (see picture below).  I guess that's sort of innovative back in the days.  I wouldn't remember this until I opened up the case.

IMG_20180317_231238.thumb.jpg.3354f47cfe71bd41819739cd1ae727cb.jpg

After cloning and swapping the hard drive, I tried to make the cable management a bit better (see picture below).

IMG_20180317_231044.jpg.0c6ece0cdbc9ae0823479b3eec7996a6.jpg

Very happy with the result, the boot up time and launching web browser such as Chrome is a lot faster now.  It's like bringing a 90 years old man back to his 40's.  haha... I can't go that extreme to say bringing back an old man back to his teens or twenties.
