Still a mystery why they even bothered to change the reference design so minimally and uselessly.

Did they make their own water blocks? Because if they did, that will be why.

Otherwise it will probably be something to do with the factory or process they use for manufacturing

Instead of "pl 150" to power limit to 150 Watts I'd suggest you try "-lgc 0,2205" to cap the graphics Frequency to 2.2HHz as this seems to be the sweet spot:

also, this works like a charm, right now it's pulling 90W for a WU but last WU it pulled 130. temps stay in check!

i believe they partnered with Alphacool to do a waterblocked version, though that waterblock is technically a "reference" design. probably a manufacturing quirk like you mentioned.

Got my new XFX 6700XT a few weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. It's nice and quiet, folds for a nice bump over my 1660S, goes brr... Couldn't ask for much more than that. A few days ago, I even decided to throw the 1660S in there too. Wasn't sure how that would work out but seemed to go fine for a few days so I left it and was averaging 3-4M PPD between the two cards. Pretty good on the 9yo 650W PSU! 🎉

So I went downstairs yesterday morning and noticed that my folding/only computer had turned off. This is highly unusual since it folds 24/7. Then I smelled that smell. 😱

After breaking out the spare PSU and hooking it up last night, my assumptions are tentatively correct... dead PSU and otherwise functioning components. So I ordered a new 850W ATX3.0 ready unit that should be here tomorrow.🤞

Ooo, another Heatkiller Tube user! I got one not too long ago for my main rig because the EK D5 pump/res combo Den sent me unfortunately started cracking and absolutely pissing coolant (because it's EK; whaddya expect lol). I got the Tube 100, transplanted the D5 pump, and it seems to work like a charm!

I love how just insanely overbuilt that monstrosity is. A solid machined acetyl base and top, 1cm square aluminum supports, a thick borosilicate glass tube...I love it.

oh yeah ever since i deviated form the standard alphacool and EK stuff i have been blown away with the difference in quality.

just goes to show, just because some brands are popular doesn't mean they're actually the best.

I also love the dual D5 pump housing they make. Again just a solid block of acetal with some thick stainless steel parts for good measure.

Hm, lemme check

I have a grand total of ~0.00Billion PPD combined

I'm doing ~20M combined on dual 2080 Tis, a 2070 Super, and an RTX A2000. I might be able to do 35M if I'm not only able to get that liquid-cooled 3090 but jank up a loop and rig so I can run both it and the 2080 Tis.

I'm doing nothing right now but 12m PPD is my usual when I can be arsed to finish sorting out the server, during event it depends how money is

Gets me thinking, what is the slowest card that can still fold? My GTX 650 was pretty bad years ago. Well under 250K PPD and it almost caught a PC on fire when the molex to PCIe melted.

Before it was required a minimum of 400 series, but that may have changed

I've been averaging ~3-4m PPD recently with the two power-tuned 2060s in my little home server.

Come folding month, I typically turn my desktop on for folding too, which has a 3090 in it -- which puts out too much heat/sucks down too much power for me to be able to run it 24/7 outside of events, even when power limited down enough to start losing serious performance. That'll probably take me up to around 14m PPD.

With any luck, I might have something new to throw at the event by November, too. We'll see!

The requirements page still lists it as 400 series -- anything CUDA will run on, pretty much. I managed to get it up and going on a GTX 560 for a bit sometime last year for fun, which uses the same architecture as the 400 series, so it seems accurate! I think that makes the slowest desktop chip that can still fold a GT 420, because the GT405 is a rebranded 300 series card, which can't run CUDA.

I have a GT430 in my basement, just for laughs I ought to try it out sometime.

If you do, I would be genuinely very curious to see what kind of PPD you'd get -- or if it could even finish a WU before it expired.

I'll throw it in a very low power system, I've got a i5 8400T in a Z370 board that'll work fine for that, a tinker for in a couple weeks, I'll be away from home for a bit and won't have time to set it up before I leave.

currently about 18M, but i hope to jump up to around 35-40M when the event kicks off.
really depends on if i manage to cram another 4070Ti into my server.

Just make sure whatever you run will make the "Timeout" limit, otherwise the work unit will get re-assigned to another folder. As long as you return it within "Expiration", you'll still get some points, but it's useless work.

I'm doing ~20M combined on dual 2080 Tis, a 2070 Super, and an RTX A2000. I might be able to do 35M if I'm not only able to get that liquid-cooled 3090 but jank up a loop and rig so I can run both it and the 2080 Tis.

Right now I can get around 6M PPD with the cards I currently have installed in various machines (dual Quadro P4000s, GTX 1080, RTX 2070 Super), but I have some other cards to add to the pool once Folding Month starts. My current plan for cards to use for Folding Month is as follows:

  • Quadro P4000
  • Quadro P4000
  • Quadro M4000
  • Quadro M4000
  • GTX 1080
  • GT 1030
  • RTX 2070 (if I can get it working - it's currently stuck at 300MHz following a power outage)
  • RTX 2070 Super
  • Radeon RX 570 4GB
  • Radeon RX 570 8GB
  • Radeon RX 570 8GB
  • Radeon RX 580 4GB
  • Radeon RX 580 8GB

I'm not sure what my total PPD with all of those cards would be, and I'm not certain that I'll be able to run them all (the Radeon cards are lower priority for me since their PPD is much lower), but hopefully it'll be decent.

6M PPD... I have no extra hardware to pull 'out of the cupboard'   😁

I have
5800X3D w/2070 Super
3800X w/3060

I then save up for the folding months by putting money every month into my Vast.ai account, and then spool up a couple of machines on the there to run as long as I can afford with the money I have accumulated 😁
