EA forbids DICE from Talking to the Community

AlTech

DICE, the Developers of Battlefront 2, are restricted from talking to the community.

This is suspected to be forced by EA.

A DICE developer admitted on Twitter that DICE would love to talk more to the community and be more open. Allegedly they are being restricted in what they can say. Whilst EA was not mentioned as the source of the restriction, EA are the owners of/boss of DICE and thus it would make sense.

This is what the DICE dev had to say:

197a50ba-3ef9-4d36-a515-66f99fce8ed3.png

Shortly after this communication took place, the Twitter account was suspended. Again, seems like EA really doesn't want DICE devs to talk.

Additionally, a community manager on the Battlefront 2 forums has provided information which suggests that EA has called for all public responses to comments to be manually approved.

large_swAWd8XpZ.png

The key highlights of that message are quite disturbing:

Quote
  • "communication, updates and messaging need approval by all parties involved" - this isn't usually a problem with big games, especially multiplayer games with regular updates. This boils down to: someone at either EA or Lucasfilm insisted on developer silence.
  • "the team is working on updates and changes that would directly impact many of your ongoing questions or our responses" - why not simply say "we're working on that" to those answers, which would inspire confidence and allay any fears?

The community manager has indicated that his hands are tied and he can't say anything suggesting that EA wants to be the one to control the narrative sent to the public. Which itself is somewhat disgusting.

What's next? EA turning into the Galactic Empire with DICE being the Rebels or what?

EA is becoming just as bad as the Galactic Empire.

DICE made such a good game in Battlefront 2 and EA has to come in and ruin it with microtransactions and this BS. Cmon guys.

Well, that's EA for you, I didn't expect anything better from them.

Honestly I hated what dice games lately and most of the time it has been EA who fucked it up for them. Always forcing games to release before they were finished or make them rush a game. Or add stupid things like loot box game progression. I just want the a game like bad company 2 from dice and for EA to just let dice do their own thing. I mean look at blizzard, even though they are owned by Activision they still make good games because Activision doesn't mess with them at all.

The right thing to do would be to make it an even bigger scandal than it is, until hopefully Disney revokes them the right to SW games. Sadly, since TLJ is out, Disney doesn't seem to care.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Of course I don't believe them. Most of the cost of making a game comes from marketing if it's a AAA game.

Games can be pretty costly though. With literally hundreds of people of various skills working on them over the course of 2-4 years... it kind of adds up. Even if everyone was paid minimal wage (which they obviously aren't), and then if you assume 200 people are working on the project (which for a AAA dev team seems reasonable although this is basically just a guess) and it took them 3 years to make you'd be looking at almost 10 million dollars in dev costs. While I don't think microtransations and other shady practices are the way to go AAA games are indeed rather expensive to produce.
