Nvidia Announces Titan V

Source 1: posted by Max_Settings https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/870611-nvidia-announces-titan-v-volta/

Source 2: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12135/nvidia-announces-nvidia-titan-v-video-card-gv100-for-3000-dollars

  • Last night at the NIPS Conference, NVidia announced their new Titan V GPU with a golden shroud

  • Available for purchase today for $3,000

    • It has the same GPU as the Tesla V100 which is $10,000

  • TITAN V is targeted at machine learning scientists who want to simply install the card into their desktop PCs, and not rely on a special server, storage, or networking.

    • keeps the TITAN branding as opposed to GeForce TITAN

    • Machine learning workloads favor heavy-duty matrix math operations which require massive memory bandwidth

  • Specs:

    • 5120 CUDA cores

    • 110 DL TFLOPS

      • that’s 9x times the deep learning computing horsepower of its predecessor

    • 1455 MHz boost clock

    • 815 mm2 die (GV100)

    • 80 streaming multiprocessors (SMs)

    • 12GB of 1.7GHz HBM2 attached via a 3072-bit memory bus.

    • Each memory controller is associated with a ROP partition and 768 KB of L2 cache, bringing L2 down to 4.5 MB

    • 21.1 billion transistors

    • vapor chamber cooler with copper heatsink and 16 power phases

    • 250W TDP

  • NVIDIA is first and foremost promoting it as a workstation-level AI compute card, though it will still be a capable video card with all the appropriate outputs

  • Titan V gets the GV100 GPU’s full, unrestricted FP64 compute and tensor core performance.

  • What does separate the Titan from the Tesla: memory capacity, memory bandwidth, and the lack of NVLink functionality.

  • Uses the standard GeForce driver stack

  • ts Volta architecture underwent a serious revamping of the SM processor design at the core of the GPU, which should provide twice the  energy of efficiency Pascal.

    • This allows for major boosts in FP32 and FP64 performance, within the same power envelope.

AMD and Qualcomm join forces on Always Connected PCs

Source 1: posted by TheLinusPortal https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/869611-amd-and-qualcomm-join-forces-to-power-higher-end-connected-pcs/

Source 2: https://www.engadget.com/2017/12/05/amd-qualcomm-always-connected-pc-ryzen-snapdragon/

  • AMD and Qualcomm are teaming up to make Always Connected PCs on AMD's "Ryzen" mobile platform while using Snapdragon LTE modems to enable gigabit connection speeds.

  • The Ryzen chipsets can provide decent frame rates for mid range games like League of Legends or Overwatch. Since the higher-end CPU can reach 3.8GHz

  • Marrying this performance with Snapdragon's X16 LTE modems means that laptops could be powerful enough for online gaming over cellular connections.

AMD Silently Lowers Radeon RX560 Specs

Source 1: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12122/amd-silently-lowers-radeon-rx-560-specifications

  • AMD has silently lowered the specifications of the Radeon RX 560 to encompass parts with 14 CUs (896 Stream Processors), allowing them to be sold alongside standard 16 CU (1024 SP) parts.

  • This allows AMD and its partners to market and ship lower-performing Radeon RX 460-level products under the "RX 560" branding.

  • Sometime within the past few months the Radeon RX 560 product page on AMD's website was silently changed to include the lowered 14 CU specifications

    • In July the site still said "16 CUs" only

  • Hawaii Republican Chris Lee posted a video to YouTube in which he calls for "future protections for kids, youth, and everyone when it comes to the spread of predatory practices in online gaming."

  • Lee describes EA’s Batlefront II as  "a Star Wars-themed online casino designed to lure kids into spending money.

  • He wants to ban the sale of such games to gamers under the age of 21

    • Would that actually do anything??

  • "These kinds of lootboxes and microtransactions are explicitly designed to prey upon and exploit human psychology in the same way casino games are so designed,"

  • Frankly, we don't need to change the laws in every state...We just need to change a few and it will be enough to draw the line and compel change."

First ever AI presidential candidate

    • "Artificial intelligence will cope with the post of president much better. He does not feel emotion, he is guided by logic, he looks at things objectively and does not get old”

  • Despite popular opinion, Russia’s Central Election Committee may find reason to decline the bid and prevent the robot from joining the presidential race.

Steam no longer accepts Bitcoin

Source 1: posted by VegetableStu https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/870288-steam-no-longer-accepts-bitcoin/

Source 2: https://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/1464096684955433613

  • Yes, Steam did in fact accept Bitcoin as payment, but not anymore, due to high fees and volatility in the value of Bitcoin.

  • When Steam first added Bitcoin as a method of payment, transaction fees were roughly $0.20. Now they’ve creeped as high as $20 per transaction.

    • These fees are passed on to the consumer and result in unreasonably high costs for games

  • The value of Bitcoin is only guaranteed for a certain period of time so if the transaction doesn’t complete within that window of time, then the amount of Bitcoin needed to cover the transaction can change.

    • The normal solution is to either refund the original payment to the user, or ask the user to transfer additional funds to cover the remaining balance.

    • In both these cases, the user is hit with the transaction fee again!

  • Steam may re-evaluate accepting BTC at a later date.

Google pulls YouTube from Amazon devices (again)

Source 1: posted by davrosG6 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/869948-google-is-pulling-youtube-from-amazon-devices-again/

Source 2: https://techcrunch.com/2017/12/05/google-is-pulling-youtube-from-echo-show-and-fire-tv-as-feud-with-amazon-continues/

  • Earlier this fall, Google pulled the YouTube app from Amazon’s Echo Show devices due to dissatisfaction with the implementation

    • The app was missing subscriptions, related videos, commenting, sharing, and more

  • But a few weeks ago, YouTube returned to Echo devices- but apparently without Google’s consent!

    • Amazon had apparently built a work-around by implementing the web version of YouTube.  This version was also built without Google’s input

    • Google learned about it from the press, like everyone else

  • The new version overlays voice controls on top of the experience, which Google claims is a violation of its Terms of Service

  • Now, Youtube has been pulled from the Echo Show, and FireTV users have been warned that the app will disappear on January 1st.

  • Is the removal temporary?

    • “We’ve been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other’s products and services...But Amazon doesn’t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest’s latest products. Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon.”

Mega Man X Games coming to modern platforms

Source 1: posted by SlipperyPete https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/869840-mega-man-x-games-coming-to-pc-switch-ps4-and-xbox-one/

  • Capcom has announced that all eight Mega Man X games are coming to current-gen platforms, including the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC, in the summer of 2018.

    • Mega Man X started on the Super Nintendo as a sort of soft-reboot for the classic 2D platforming series. The series spanned across the SNES, PlayStation, and PlayStation 2 before finally ending with Mega Man X8 in 2004.

  • Mega Man Legacy Collections 1 and 2, which together include Mega Man 1 through 10, will come to Switch in 2018.

  • Capcom also announced Mega Man 11 for current-gen platforms.

  • The games are likely to be released separately and not as a collection but this hasn't been confirmed

  • You’ll soon be able to play Nintendo games on a third-party machine as Nintendo is porting full Wii and GameCube games to the NVIDIA SHIELD which just launched in China.

  • the first three titles are

    • New Super Mario Bros. Wii,

    • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess,

    • PUNCH-OUT!!

  • All of these games have been remastered in 1080p for the release.

  • Super Mario Galaxy is planned for release, though we don’t know when.

  • BUT we’ll likely never see these releases outside of China

    • The Switch isn’t available in China so Nintendo is using the Shield as a foot in the door.

    • It is possible that these games will come to the Switch through a virtual console though, as it has similar hardware to the Shield.

  • They’ve now taught AlphaZero to play some new games from scratch by playing against itself over and over again.

    • It defeated the world’s best Chess bot, Stockfish, after just 4 hours of self-training.

    • It spent two hours learning shogi—a Japanese version of chess that’s played on a bigger board—and then defeated one of the best bots around.

    • It defeated previous human-champion-beating AlphaGo after 8 hours of training.

Drone used to force Japanese staff to go home

Source 2: https://www.davidicke.com/index.php/article/443533/japanese-firms-deploy-singing-drones-combat-overwork-culture

  • The T-Frend drone hovers around the heads of workers clocking in overtime while playing Auld Lang Syne, an 18th century Scottish ballad commonly used in Japan to tell shoppers it’s closing time.

    • The drone will hover over your head playing the loud music until you leave.

  • T-Frend can take a pre-programmed flight across the office autonomously, using its sensors to navigate around walls and other obstacles.

  • T-Rend also functions as a security drone, filming surveillance footage and storing the data on an SD card.

  • The drone’s developers are also considering outfitting it with facial recognition technology to help spot burglars and other intruders after-hours.

  • T-Frend is expected to be launched in April, with a target price of around $4,400 a month.

That comment about high recording framerate on phones is interesting actually, and true, I had never considered it before.

Take a DSLR outside on a bright day at base ISO and wide open and your shutter speed will be somewhere in the 1/1500 - 1/3000 of a second

Try that with a phone and even in broad daylight, you're probably looking at something like 1/150 - 1/300th xD

So if you are gonna shoot video at 240 fps, obviously you need a shutter speed of at least 1/240 if not 1/480, and that means cranking the ISO to compensate, which will increase noise and decrease dynamic range, making it look terrible.

Yep, that's why they only acknowledge the naughties as a time period too, it's the edgiest of all the time periods.

The gold colour is because that is what colour the Tesla V100 is. Since the Titan V is a slightly toned down Tesla V100 with a titan cooler on it, they obviously decided to keep the same colour.

The card literally shares nearly all the same specs as the Tesla V100, just lacking a bit of memory.

Anybody from LMG Staff, the intro and outro music are stupidly loud now you've switched to OBS.

I forgot the intro was so loud then the outro played and now I have tinnitus in both ears xD

Just for the record: Linus's use of the term "volatility" was 100% correct. The volatility of a variable is its variance (so the volatility of bitcoin's value is the variance of its value, the volatility of stocks returns is the variance of said returns). The variance or some derivative measure, same idea.

Luke was somewhat right on the "negative connotation", but such connotation is not about downward trends or expected declines in value: it has a negative connotation because volatility in itself is an undesirable property of an asset for risk averse investors (that is, the vast majority).

Let's say assets A and B offer the same expected return, but A is more volatile than B. In that case, risk averse investors would strictly prefer B. In order to hold the more volatile A, its expected return should be higher than the expected return of B, to compensate for the additional volatility. The difference in expected returns necessary to make an investor indifferent between the more volatile A and the less volatile B is called the "risk premium" of A over B.

Investors would trade off some of the average price increase for bitcoin in exchange for a more stable increase over time.

Yeah, no one cared, but I don't care you didn't care :P

@nickmlg @LinusTech If OBS doesn't work out for you guys or if you need to step it up in terms of capability, you should check out vMix. It's professional vision mixing software and it's insanely versatile and efficient. It's also extremely optimized for GeForce GPU acceleration, which may be a plus for you guys. We use it at my company for sports broadcasting, but I've seen it used in just about any application imaginable. It's also very easy to automate with shortcuts, triggers, support for MIDI controllers, etc.

There's a 60 day free trial if you guys want to check it out.

Yes, I know I sound like a shill, but the truth is I just think it's fantastic software.

@LinusTech you do not need to use only p106 cards on the asus board you can use all gtx 1060s in every slot  you just need to use a linux based os like ubuntu or you can use something like nvoc OS and that's all set up so you can mine out of the box for free. only windows has the gpu limitation.

alos there's SO MANY ways to spend bitcoin and you can but a car or a house with it pretty easily using sagepayepay blue. and pay bills with

https://bylls.com/

https://www.bitwala.com/

http://welto.io/

and turn it into cash using quadrigacx if you're in canada

theres also a bunch of stores that will take it or third parties to get anything you want

if you have any other questions or need help with the mine feel free to message me as i deal with mines with large numbers of gpus a lot .

For all things good, DON'T ACCEPT BITCOIN! EVER!

Even if the market did crashed the fees will likely still be absurdly high due to max transaction count.

Even Ether is still pricey after the Kitties took it over... It's still sitting at $2USD suggested, and only because Ether has fallen...

I love cryptocurrencies i like bitcoin (but to me it's dead, and not because it is pricey but it's useless) but if for some stupid reason i have a logical reason to put my currencies into bitcoin i have the offline wallet, and i would have a hard time justifying wasting even $10 on moving money, just to move it again. I have an offline wallet for every coin i use, there i said it :P

There are places that permit cashing Bitcoin out but at a loss of coin value plus fees.

I will however say use Bitcoin if and only if you watch this video without doing any of the following:

For Ether pick 5 things you're not allowed to do, literally that's how bad of an idea accepting Bitcoin is compared to anything else.

  1. Can't take a break for any reason including washroom breaks
  2. Can't laugh regardless how funny it may be
  3. Can't roll your eyes at them
  4. Can't do anything else while watching including eating (drinking water or coffee is ok)
  5. Can't talk to those around you
  6. Can't blink
  7. Can't sleep
  8. Can't breath
  9. Can't get eye strain
  10. Can't change audio output of choice during playback

*Those who do all 10 will likely die, or at the very least end up in the hospital.

Simply put Both coins have gained thousands of times it's value since the beginning of the year while I personally think Etherium is going to beat Bitcoin, it's not there yet.

The vast majority of places won't accept it.  Everywhere will take regular currency though.  That's the point he was making.  I don't know how so many people missed it.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!
