2018 iPhone to Sport 6.1" Display and New Colours

Apple has innovated new colours to the colour spectrum. To be released with the new iPhone in 2018. These new colours will be substitutes for the back of iPhones similar to the 5C. Keep in mind these are rumours.
The iPhones will also sport a larger variety of displays, with four sizes. 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 5.8 inches. This could potentially be a clue to yet another new iPhone, as the iPhone 8 (and 8 plus) are two sizes and the iPhone X is another size. Thats three sizes. Could the iPhone X be getting a sibling?

A change from the current glass back to a metallic back brings both an upside and a downside. While the new handset will likely be more durable, with less glass to shatter accidentally, it may drop the ability to wirelessly charge.

Switching from OLED to LCD wouldn't be a big deal, provided that it entails a lower price. Comparatively, OLED panels deliver more saturated colors and truer black tones. And, unlike LCD screens, OLED panes can be molded to fit a casing.

This handset is claimed to be the mid-size model of the pack, with Apple other 2018 iPhones coming in at 6.2 or 6.3 inches, and 5.8 inches.

Realistically, the iPhone X was Apple's testing grounds for OLED screens and... I guess they might not've been satisfied.

Which, to be honest, isn't that bad of a deal. Apple's LCD screens have always been really good for what they're worth.

LCD has some advantages over OLED, one of the most important of which is price. 

 

They know they can't keep charging $1000+ for this style of iPhone and expect sales and revenue to be up. OLED panels in this form are just too expensive.

Seems unusual that Apple would focus all of these models on this range of sizes, unless this is just the premium lineup and they plan to have a regular iPhone 8 successor.

You can't innovate colour.

Its harder to speculate on what Apple does now but I would expect to see an iPhone X and iPhone X as well as the iPhone 9, 9+.

I would honestly prefer an LCD screen, but this rumor didn't make sense to me when I saw it back in November and it still doesn't make sense now.....a 6.1" LCD is just an odd size when there's a 5.8" OLED (xs) and presumably a 6.3" OLED (xs+). I don't believe they'd drop OLED entirely -- especially since there is another recent rumor that they're going to start getting OLEDs from LG. 

 

I am still curious to know if a borderless LCD is possible since the backlight needs to go somewhere and all other LCD edgless phones have had a bezel somewhere. 

 

There are ways to do wireless charging through metal (resonance instead of inductive charging, and resonance is better for a ton of other reasons too -- multiple devices at different power levels, larger charging window), so switching to a metal back wouldn't necessarily negate that possibility (and I would really much prefer a metal backed phone).

I'd be surprised by that choice unless LG has made more progress with their smartphone displays. (Remember the LG V30/Pixel 2 Xl complaints, imagine if that happened to Apple of all companies)

If 5'8 will be the smallest, then I can not imagine them going forward with the old casing at all, with large bezels. I say it because 8 Plus already has a huge footprint and is only 5'5.

First is the X is selling well. I am seeing them everywhere where I live and based on what articles I could find are neck in neck with the 8 sales. 

 

Second is they are still going to charge $1000. Its apple...when they cut corners, they dont cut cost.

Go with OLED apple has nailed it. I left my iPhone X on the same screen for 9 hours at medium brightness and there was zero burn in at all. Same goes for the battery and clock. A+ for whatever they did compared to Google

First off, why did you leave it on the same screen for 9 hours?

 

Second is depending on the content, there is def burn in. Might not be apparent in normal use but if you check with a solid red, green, blue background it might become more apparent. Seeing how its so early in its life you might not even notice it for a few months until they begin to dim. You cant avoid burn in.

That's Apple bringing the OLED problems of the Pixel 2XL to the iPhone X. Samsung's OLED all the way.

I'll let it pass for a year or two until the actual burn ins happen but if Apple managed to mitigate the burn in, then it could be something to do with their custom calibration of the OLED panel from Samsung.

Nah, they wouldn't put that level of complexity into their product stack. I don't think they have much respect for the intelligence level of their consumers. I would really really appreciate touch id put on the back of the phone though, this Face ID thing is not working...

 

I don't own an X, but I like the screen to body ratio the most since my 8 has this tiny low-res screen sitting in a sea of bezel and it makes the phone an effort to use and doesn't feel premium at all

How do you know FaceID doesn't work if you don't own an X?

Been looking at lots of reviews, it's also implementation. Just like the Touch ID, I don't want to have to also make gestures to unlock my phone. For $1000 for a phone you should have zero compromises

First of all, I don't believe you. You don't strike me as the type of person who would buy a 1000 dollar phone, change the settings so that the screen wouldn't turn off, and then just let it sit for 9 hours just to see if your phone gets fucked up or not.

 

Secondly, 9 hours is way too short. Try 90 hours or more.

 

Thirdly, burn-in, even fairly severe, can sometimes be hard to see. For example on my Galaxy S 2 I will not notice the burn-in unless I make a completely white image fullscreen, and really look at it.

I have seen several people claim Apple were innovative when they started selling the iPhones in several colors...
