Swelling batteries not limited to samsung phones.

The Price is Rice

Here I thought only samsung devices would suffer from swelling/exploding batteries. Here we have a pilots EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) with a battery that swelled so much it cracked the screen. Doh!!!!

Batteries swell, the trick is for the engineers to build in enough space. It's the same reason why the footpath is in squareish sections.

Lithium batteries swell as part of their way of failing. The difference is the old ones used to be in a big plastic case that contained the swelling. Now they just expand and push everything out of the way.

Just about every model of phone that has ever used a Li-Ion battery has had at least a few units swell.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

All batteries swell. Not just Samsung batteries. The batteries on Airplanes can swell and cause a fire.  I remember hearing a story about a planes batteries catching fire.

Battery swelling is a failure mode of lithium batteries, it's nothing unique to Samsung.

I'm getting the impression everyone thinkks LiPO swells...

How do you know the device didn't just get smaller?   I grew up in the 80's and all electronics got smaller then, I see no reason why it can't happen again.

Old battery housings used to be big enough to contain the swelling, now they just push every component out of the way.
