Tbh, Intel iGPUs have come a very long way from the GMA series of old. Back then, only old games would run at low settings and potato resolution for anything faster than a hurried slideshow. You pretty much needed the video card to play games at all. Nowadays, you can reasonably play most games (barring the most demanding AAA titles) today on current iGPUs.

Finally someone get it.

The big differences between the old GMA and current intel HD is the current iGPU almost have all the features that games needed, the drawbacks is the low clocks, low bandwidth, while it still sucks in general, but at least it can run most games, unlike older iGPU.

We'll see,  Historically when they have engaged is such practices they only had one competitor to lose customers to and they were the very products being gimped, however while ryzen is serious competition, Intel risk losing CPU sales if they tried anything as obvious (benchmarks would quickly show the best hardware to pair together and Intel would only be on a list by themselves).  Time will tell how unscrupulous they wish to become though.

I've games on Intel GMA graphics before, so this something I felt worthy of bringing up. In terms of compute performance, the Intel GMA 4500MHD is about on the same level as the iPhone 4S GPU, or at least, not much greater. While my second laptop with the Radeon 5470 would be hardly considered fit for gaming, it was leagues ahead by comparison.

Technically speaking, Nvidia's Denver V2 cores should be able to run x86 code pretty efficiently right? Assuming Intel loses their lawsuit against Qualcomm and set the precedent for translating the x86 instruction set.

 

I don't imagine we'll see Nvidia break into the x86 market, but we could very well see them support Windows 10 in a similar way to "Windows 10 on ARM", as well as supporting other ARM based OSes like Android and Fuchsia.

Even if they wanted to bring discrete graphics chips for consumer PCs it'd be a while before they get any winning design, thanks to Intel's immense lack of graphics IP and technical talent. Raja alone cannot change the face of Intel's graphics division overnight. And the Intel-AMD deal makes it even less of a necessity.

AMD also had *very* limited resources to work with. You can have all the IP you want, without money to pay for the patents you don't have, to pay the engineers making the product, and to pay for marketing and integration, it's a very challenging task.

 

Intel on the other hand has the opposite issue though, you're right. They can smack Raja with a wad of cash, but that doesn't give them the IP to build a GPU.

 

But AMD doesn't have to cross license to Intel though. Unlike x86, there are other players in the field especially if you're worried about compute rather than rendering. Between AMD, ARM, Imagination, Qualcomm, and Broadcom, Intel has options.

 

The Intel/RTG EMIB package is cool, but it really doesn't compete in the sector where Nvidia is a concern for Intel. Intel needs more options for scalable and parallel compute in HPC or they're going to fall behind as CPU performance becomes less important.

This is very interesting.

Hopefully Raja can do much better with more cash and competent people at Intel than the catastrophe called Vega at AMD.

I was thinking about this as well. 

 

In hind sight we know that the intel AMD combo was in the works well before we heard the first rumours that were debunked by both intel and AMD. 

 

The timing seems as though Raja moving to Intel is part of the deal, he would have non compete clauses in his contract with AMD. So a move like this would not be possible in a one month time frame, more like a year. 

 

An AMD and intel graphics partnership maybe... That something I would be excited for, high end graphics from AMD/intel collaborative development.

I think they could easily market it (better performance/gimping competitors) as some sort of new technology that they're implementing that allows the CPU and GPU to communicate more easily. I also think they could easily get away with it.
