A 49" 32:9 monitor from Philips? Why not.

Did you think LG's new 42" 4k monitor was big, think again!

Phillips is prepearing to release thier new 49-inch 32:9 UltraWide curved monitor, the Philips 492P8.

The monitor is supposidly going to come in at just under $1100, and is repordetly going to be released

in Q2 of 2018.

Some spec highlights are:
49-inch VA display panel
Native resolution of 3840 × 1080 pixels

32:9 aspect ratio

Brightness up to 600cd/m²

Contrast up to 5000:1

Personally, I'm curious to see, if 3840*1080 isn't a tad bit small for a monitor this size, especially the screen-door effect.

Because its a crap panel and on top of it the resolution is terrible. My dell 34u has a 3440x1440 screen on a 34" and this 49" appears to be the same height and 1080 at that height looks good awful as all I see is pixels.

That is the main problem with this extremely large monitors is resolution and shit panels. 1080 should be gone now in favor of 1440.

I can get 2 27" 1440p 144hz G sync IPS monitors with USB hubs for $100 more, and remove the casing to make damn near the same thing.

You say that as if I haven't before. The only challenging concept to it is finding a pair of panels with little to no noticeable bezel, or can handle some modding. That is actually how some monitors are made.

Only difference is that I need to use software to make it work as one monitor, OEMs can use hardware and firmware.

basically take a 4k monitor and cut it in half vertically?

Horizontally.

This monitor still doesn't make any sense. It's based on Samsung's panel used in their own C49HG90. These monitors are insanely overpriced, and the aspect ration is impractical. Sure it would replace 2 16:10 monitors just fine, but for gaming it makes little sense. Movies will have vertical black bars and games will have too little vertical space for a proper overview of the game world. This is literally Samsung taking a tv panel and cutting it in two. It makes no sense as a monitor.

No matter how small the bezel you cannot play on both screens as the sights will be in the crack. You will never get tight of a gap by doing it your self instead of just buying an ultra wide.

It is ~1/8" taller than your display and 1.5" taller than a 24" 1080p display. The pixel density does really suck with this display.

As a better comparison it is marginally taller (.0295") than a 27" 1080p display.

Nothing special spec wise. Samsung haves better one so. Also, still high price none the less.

I currently have 2x 16:9 so it's like that. Such can be nice for work and productivity but I wouldn't game on it. Same how I don't see the point in 3 monitors setup for gaming bezelsbor not.

this is even a massive size upgrade for a  34" 21:9 owner. the resolution is shit thought, its like two 1080p 27" screens. 5120x1600 would make more sense

This should be exactly the same as two 24,5 inch 1080p monitors stuck together. And as I have used 1080p, 1440p and 1440p ultrawide and 4K very extensively, 1080p on a 24 inch screen is not awful, neither is VA rubbish. Maybe you have bad experiences, but VA panels are generally good and pixelation on 24 inch 1080p monitors are not that bad.

Sooner or later we are going to have a doughnut shape monitor and later on a spiral, as it gets longer and longer.

Or maybe I am just used to 1440p and 4k monitors. 1080 just doesnt cut it for me.

It has the same pixel density as 1080p on a 27in panel (81ppi) which in my opinion is not enough for anything that you're gonna be looking closely at.  91-93ppi seems to be the accepted minimum pixel density looking closely at stuff, since most would agree that there's not a damn thing wrong with 1080 on a 24in display.

On my 27in 4K panel, I'll run games like PUBG at 1080p because the monitor scales perfectly and that game's optimization is awful.  If you're sitting back a bit, 1080p at 27in is pretty ok, but leaning in close it it's not what I'd want.  At my old job I had a 1080p 27in dell ultrasharp, and unless you tend to type things by leaning way the hell back in your chair, you'll probably get annoyed by the lower resolution.

If I had to guess, the point of this monitor is NOT for gamers at all, but for upgrading workstations (especially laptop-based workstations) that previously had dual or triple monitor setups.  A slightly smaller one, something like 43in would match the pixel density and vertical height of a 24in panel, and would be pretty great for cad work while allowing the use of a single displayport cable, rather than an expensive and flaky docking station needed to drive multiple displays.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.

So this is like samsung's 32:9 monitor, only double 1080p. If it was 1440 I might've considered it but this is just too low of a resolution for that size.

This would be pretty awesome to have at work. Same physical space and resolution as 2 16:9 monitors? Would prefer 2x 16:10s, but not a deal breaker.

It's clearly not for gaming. Who cares about how well it can do gaming things when it's for work? I rather like not squinting at 4K when I'm working for 10+ hours in front of a computer...
