Well, the taptic engine probably could have been reshaped to put a dent where the headphone jack would be and being able to use both simultaneously I'm sure is possible since it's possible now with an adapter/splitter. 

 

I am curious to know how moving/reshaping the taptic engine affects things though.

I saw the video and to be fair he basically broke a ton of parts attempting it and I'm positive this iphone is a hell of a lot more fragile and failure prone because of this mod. But yeah it's fairly apparent that this wasn't a space or cost issue but a decision in very much Apple style of "No, you don't want this, we know better" logic.

The taptic engine produces small subtle vibration iirc. Too small and it would have been too weak i think, but then again i think it has various strength settings. It's not really a big deal having no audio jack. Lighting headphones are rather quite good.

 

Does mean that "pass the AUX cord" isn't a fun time in your mates car though

The iPhone 7 also has a significantly smaller battery. If Samsung can fit a 3.5mm headphone jack in a slightly larger phone with a 3000mAh battery then surely Apple could have found a way, if they wanted, to fit it in a phone with a <2000mAh battery.

"there is not enough space" is such a BS excuse which shows a complete lack of understanding about how products are designed. 

They don't make a chassi and then go "what can we fit in here?" 

 

It's designed in tandem to make sure that they fit everything they want inside, without wasting space. 

 

Water resistance is no excuse for the lack of headphone jack either. You can make the headphone jack water proof. Samsung and several other companies have been doing it for several generations now. 

 

 

The fact of the matter is that Apple chose not to include the headphone jack. Why not? I don't know. There are 0 technical reasons why they could not have included it though. None. It's purely a political move. 

 

If you want to argue why it was not included then feel free to argue that there was some technical reason if you want. Just know that you are wrong. 100% wrong. 

 

 

By the way, amazing job by that guy. He is really clever and skilled.

I think you are overlooking what apple does best. Apple is rarely the first to the scene. They often look at what fails and what has potential and they change it to make it mainstream. Sure the S3 had some janky kit to allow wireless charging. But the S3 came out a while ago in the realm of phones and besides the new S8 I don't see wireless charging being used hardly anywhere. Once the iPhone 8 drops and maybe the next gen too that includes it. Airports everywhere will have wireless charging bays. This gets into the whole apple doesn't invent anything argument. I don't agree with everything they do but they do provide select products that have some pretty bulletproof features no one else has. I don't like people who say I like apple because it's apple. Or use it as a fashion statement. I want people to say oh I use an iphone because of it's great security and ecosystem.

So many companies try to copy apple in one way or another, but sadly they usually copy their worst ideas rather than their best practices

Even though most of this "copying" is something these companies have done before, but not on an international scale, and more importantly, not in Europe or North America.

idk, whether it's industrial design, or software features, or anything, there seems to be a lot of it, and it seems to be driven by trying to do what they do in a lot of cases.  Not to say Apple doesn't also copy other companies a lot, it's rampant, they just have a different style of doing it.

I'd liken most of it to copying Microsoft and Samsung projects that were before their time and failed due to that.
