Intel discontinues the Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K

Quote

If for whatever reason you need a few thousand Skylake CPUs, you better get your order in soon. Intel just issued a Product Change Notification (PCN) that lays out the schedule for the discontinuance of four sixth-generation CPUs: the Core i3-6098P, Core i5-6402P, Core i5-6600K, and Core i7-6700K. The document says that Intel started the process of discontinuing these CPUs yesterday, and that it will be taking the last orders for these chips by March 30 of 2018.

So since intel is discontinuing skylake we should be seeing some sweet deals on those processors in the near future (maybe I'll finally get that 6700k I've wanted but didn't want a ramen diet to get it)

Quote

It's no surprise that Intel is discontinuing the CPUs in question; rather, it's surprising that it took this long.

Could be signs of the times boys Coffee Lake is full steam ahead... But seriously though... What took Intel soo long to discontinue skylake ?

I'd love to upgrade CPU to Ryzen for more cores (and threads) but I want to stretch out investment a little bit longer cos money is a thing.

Platform upgrades are pretty significant imho and I'll probably wait until 2019/2020 for a platform upgrade.

Plausible but they could have been milking it a little longer due to kaby lakes heat problems

I'm not ruling it out though... Retailers could sell them cheaper to make room for other processors like coffee lake when to start to hit the shelves in high volume

What does work well, is having my "new" (1 year old device) already being ancient. Thanks Intel.

If there is anything left. I've heard from friends that they have been handing them out like crazy through their various retail programs.

Really ? I need to cop me one of those 6700k's real quick then but I shouldn't be surprised since you gotta make room for new stock

The ironic thing is you actually can thank Intel that your cpu isn't ancient. My four year old laptop is basically just as powerful as a brand new one, which is actually really nice..... So seriously, thank you Intel.

Some of their stuff really does a good job lasting. I'm hoping to get 5 years out of my laptop as well.

So, with Intel's retirement of CPU's, are we talking individual stock that you'd purchase from Newegg or Amazon, or are we talking about supplies that would potentially be used from manufacturers? Most of the stuff I've seen recently is all 7th Gen anyways, cannot find anything older.

Think it apples to both since if you bought anything with skylake and it's under warranty they'd need to have the part to rma even though cpu's don't really die just like that

I remembered the first few videos I saw from LTT are the ones with Intel pre-roll ads "Intel is bringing DDR4 to the mainstream with their core i7-6700k and core i5-6600k processors. Check in the video description to learn more."

There is more that meets the eye
I see the soul that is inside

@Ryan_Vickers

the real difference is in power saving, which is more important for a laptop

screams about gaming laptops!

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

138 is a good number.
