Instagram breach is MUCH bigger then first thought!

And its MUCH, MUCH bigger....

 

Someone is claiming to have exploited above bug and build a database of data belonging to 6 million users, containing email-addresses and phone-numbers. This dude is selling the data with a searchable website charging $10 per query!

The sender said he was able to scrape personal data belonging to 6 million users and was selling the data in a searchable website for $10 per query. The person provided a sample of 10,000 of those records.

Of the 10,000-records in the sample, 9,911 of them include either a phone number or e-mail. 5,341 include a phone number, and 4,341 include a phone number and e-mail. The data clearly isn't thrown together. A search of several dozen user names, for instance, showed they all corresponded to real Instagram users, and those user profiles were consistent with the phone numbers associated with them. The data, for example, included user names for three users whose profiles showed they were located in Australia, Thailand, and Germany. The phone numbers accompanying those users all contained the corresponding phone number country codes.

Also apparently it wasn't as "labor intensive" as first thought:

That made it possible to steal data at roughly 500,000 accounts per hour, which is much faster than first thought. At that rate, it would have almost five months to download the entire 700 million-user database.

 

It is not confirmed yet if this data is legit. But it is assumed that it is. Security researched Troy Hunt:

Hunt said: "My conclusion: there's nothing in here to disprove the data. It's *possible* it has been scraped together from other sources, but every indication is that it's legitimate and the vector you wrote about earlier is absolutely feasible and certainly not unprecedented."

This is some quite bad news honestly. A database of millions of users, not only exposing email-addresses (yay spamlists...) and phone-numbers. But actually tying those together! I think that's data that's immensely valuable to people who want to successfully impersonate other people. We all remember the time linus' twitter got hacked and there it was his phone-number that was key part of how it was done.

 

Lets hope it becomes clear as soon as possible if this data is actually legit (but lets assume it is) and I really wonder how Instagram/Facebook will respond to this..

It's a good job that countless others already had access to this information anyway.

 

Howd you think people get loads of spam calls and dodgy e-mails, because you can buy that information for a fraction of a cent.

 

$10 is extortionate unless you are a creeper who wants to ring up Miles Cyrus and breath heavily into your phone.

Yeah, $10 sounds like quite a lot. But its "per query" and I don't know for sure what that means. If its a search query like  

email LIKE '%@gmail.com'

(for illustrative purposes only, I know thats not how those things work, it'll probably be something with a REST-api or whatever)

 

then it might actually be not that much. But who knows... (I certainly don't and honestly, dont really wanna find out myself xD)

there is an instragram account assigned to my email. I thought instragram was interesting but i was scared it was going to take up too much of my time. i took a picture of a poo and never used the account again. Have fun stealing that account and impersonating a poo.

 

I see some people wondering what the $10 gives you. I reckon it would be $10 per row because otherwise you would make your $10 query to send you the entire table.

You're probably right, what I said earlier doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but on the other hand, $10 for one row doesnt make a ton of sense to me either, sounds expensive to me. But hey, maybe that person has another business-model in mind than I can think of xD

Now how does this work when you sign up with your facebook account? 

 

A lot of breaches that have google, facebook, twitter...etc sign ins tend to not have that info leaked in a breach. Lets hope thats the case for this breach.

Also btw instagram doesn't have any security against hydra so you can farm passwords all day at 500 tries a minute

Personally, I'm not that fussed if someone gets into my Instagram account since I'm not that much of a social media person (seems to be a common trend on this forum). I'm more worried about them using that contact/password information to get into more important accounts. Like my LTT account :P

Sounds exactly like a next level tech company owned by freaking Facebook would secure their user accounts. Who doesn't have protection against that nowadays? Even the forum has spam posting protection with approx 5s wait time verwendet posts, edits and stuff.
