Unhelpful replies

orangecat

Can we make unhelpful replies against the rules? For example if someone asks what a thread is (talking about computers) and someone posts a ball of yarn that's more annoying than it is helpful.

That's just blatant shitposting, which is against the rules. However, sometimes somewhat unhelpful replies are okay, and for that example they were trying to be funny. I would say that's okay, as long as they put an /s or something

But derailing is what we know best :P

Anyway I'm not really for this,  unless it disturbs the main conversation in a thread let it be.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Yea but it's kinda the same thing with the whole lmgtfy rule. There's nothing really wrong with it other than it's annoying.

Alot of the time it does disturb the thread topic because everyone else just joins in on the fun instead of being helpful.

You see quite a few off-topic comments, however I would not say it was a problem as such.

So easy to go off on a random subject when trying to help. haha.

I would say there is a definite distinction between the very rare occurrence some one 'fannying about' on a thread, with no intention of being helpful and some one genuinely giving bad advice.

Last time I checked LTT forums was open to tech enthusiasts of all skill and experience levels.

What I'm trying to say is LTT forums has a personality, stirp the wit and humour out and it will be left dull and boring.

If we are starting with that can we then also get a rule stating you have to post a complete question with as much info as you can :D

The amount of: HELP my pc is restarting WHYYYY?  topics without any further information is just as bad ;)

Completely rubbish help is already under no spam ruling. Report and move on. If you disagree or have reasons why some advice isn't correct, comment on that. I do it all the time. Like when people claim you can't control 3pin fans.

I don't think that's a valid point. A newbie who joins and has questions isn't going to know how to type out a very specific question like that. If the forum is supposed to be a welcoming place then they are immediately going to be turned off from the community.

Neither points are valid to be honest. There are correct answers which leave much open. Like for example saying just yes or no to question like "Can I use Win10 key from my previous build with new build?" Question being good enough to earn better answers and answer really not giving out anything useful. And with bad questions we have things like "I have LGA1151 mobo, is this X cooler good?" Nothing to work with there. Or "I get black screen after 5min of gaming. Help?" usually titles with I NEED HELP! Those questions need first some more info before anyone can do anything.

Ofc best thing would be if both question and answer would be specific to begin with. But that rarely happens. Another rarely happening thing is someone using search before posting. Which gives us daily/weekly questions about certain topics. Personally I've started to skip topics which have simple question stated in title and have 5+ replies. But to some of users here those kind of topics are annoying so they will post something too simple, or sometimes spammy just because they are annoyed by questions getting asked daily. New user won't know why they are getting that kind of reply, nor do they get if its supposed to be sarcastic or not if there isn't any good indicator like /s. Something not even then.

Good example was one idiot posting that stupid ram video on every topic which asked about RAM.

I think it's OK up to a point to have funny answers... it's the nature of forums really, if you try to make the forums too "straight" with rigid rules and enforcements, you might as well kiss this forum goodbye. There are many postees, myself included, that get annoyed with all those "HAAALP ME!!" type questions, that give non-specific info as to their problems, they don't post specs etc etc... so then that thread becomes a tooth pulling scenario, where every answer is having to ask another question to the OP to get the info needed to try and solve the problem for them. I think having a little humour can save you from going postal in some cases, so saves there being as many arguments... just my take on it.

And as for the "rules", come on!, I see "fan boy" stuff posted quite a lot, have seen linus and co saying abiut "fan boys" too, yes it's in humour from LTT staff, but still flouting their own rules technically. There have been a few news topics that have had discussions on it devolve into "fan boy" claims and such. I think that there is wiggle room in most "rules" and rightly so, because if not then most discussions in this forum are done for... so as long as nobody takes it oo far and things start getting a little "flamey" around here, then it's all good. I think there has to be some give and take between OPs and replies, if they don't appreciate the humour then they should just say so and that should be the end of it... no need to make more work for the mods at all.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.

@LoGiCalDrm is right, you need a valid question to get a valid answer. I have seen many new users that post spammy questions all over the place. Sometimes it seems like they just want to raise their post count. Questions such as "what is Ethernet?" "how to restart windows?" should not be allowed in the forum( but they are, I have proof).
A simple google search can answer most of those questions.

Now you've twisted my post completely. I meant that just having badly written question doesn't give right to give wrong answer or troll/sarcasm the hell out of it. Nor does short answers give anyone right to attack those just because they are right, but didn't give full answer.

maybe I did not explain myself, I never meant  that at all. No one should be bullied over poor grammar or a badly written question.
What I meant was, a stupid/ simple question  should not be allowed in the first place. If someone ask "what is Ethernet?" and I post a reply with the google definition it should be fine. I DO NOT condone trolling.

A crap question attracts crap answers.

If your question can be answered by reading wikipedia, then you cannot expect a quality response compared to a question that precisely identifies what you are struggling with.

For example, asking "what is a thread" can be put into a web search, and the first result is a wikipedia page. If you do not understand something in the wikipedia page then you can go to a forum and ask for clarification on what you are struggling with.

The amount of people who ask before googling just turns this forum into a collection of shit posts.

Just to add to my list of frustrations with phrasing questions...

- I really dislike ambiguous thread titles. "Please help with this!" is very unhelpful, rather it should be "Windows 10 is giving me error 0xc00000e after Update". Especially for others who have a similar issue to be able to scan through titles when searching for help themselves.

- When posting for help, users should have done *some* research if possible and at least briefly state what their experience is/what theyve tried.

If unsure what they should be searching for, then they should also state this so we can try and educate them to help themselves.

- Make sure you read any stickies and give detailed information. e.g If you're posting in a hardware build advice forum, make sure it has a budget and a use case. If you're posting in a Windows forum, make sure you give the version, logs/screenshots, etc...

Also in regards to unhelpful replies...It's very annoying when people who do not have a clue what theyre talking about, give advice. Fair enough if time has passed, but do not post with a completely made up opinion 5 minutes after the OP. We get this a lot in Server, Network, Storage and OS forums.
