2015 or earlier setups. Who's still happy?

wonderboyATHF

My build is still very solid (profile). 2700K (4.9 GHz) and 980 Ti. I mostly do programming though / only really play casual JRPG games (which are PS4 ports...pretty much whatever compile heart sells).

I sadly might have to upgrade because I want to play some 4KHD bluray anime I plan to buy...and you need a damn kaby lake system or newer for it. I really hate the DRM scheme for 4KHD bluray...it's terrible.

For any hard work, I fall back to my Xeon Server, with the E5-2695V3 (14 core, 28 thread). I plan to build a new render server eventually with dual Xeons (They're pretty cheap off of ebay...and don't need large AIOs to cool them)

Built mine in 2012 it's getting old but still going, upgraded the PSU from a XFX 550w Core Edition (RMA'ed) to Evga G2 1000w then RMA'ed for a P2 1000w. Upgraded the GPU from HD 7850 to HD 7850 crossfire after that to a R9 290, lastly to my GTX 1070. RAM I added an extra 8GB, 2 SSD plus extra HDD. Changed case once too to keep it fresh but feel like doing a full overhaul next time.

4930K Desktop, 3770K HTPC, 4590 HTPC, 2300 server.  ...All '2015 or earlier' and all fine.  The only new one is my 7500U laptop. :P

Even the 4930K is four years old come Christmas but honestly, put some Vega 64 goodness and I'll wait another year.

I'm still here using a 7950, but it seems as if i'm quite due for an upgrade. Runs most of the game i play fine i suppose, but I'm considering upgrading to 1440p in the future.

I still use my "old" build when I go back home. It is has an i5 4460 and a GTX 970, and it runs all the games I play in ultra 1080p 60fps, like Overwatch the Witcher Borderlands and many others. The only thing that I'm not happy about is the SSD, which sometimes will refuse to be detected by the motherboard (it doesn't even show up in the UEFI), so it won't boot to Windows, but I didn't expect to get anything much better for $20.

The only difference with it and my new rig is that I can now play almost every game in 4k ultra 60fps.

I'm still using my main system built almost exactly two years ago (August 2015), although it has had changes. Not upgrades as such necessarily... originally the CPU was cooled with a 280mm AIO. I upgraded it to an EK custom loop. I upgraded it to a Noctua D14 cooler which does near enough as well, but quieter. The EK loop had a low vibration I never managed to tune out.

GPU went 960 to 980 Ti (reference blower, then EK) to a different 980 Ti air cooled. I added more storage too, in the form of an extra 960GB SSD and 1TB HD. With the removal of watercooling, since it was pretty much built into the old case, I moved it into a new case.

So fundamentally, it is the same CPU, the same mobo, the same RAM. I probably could keep using it for years more, but I am in the process of upgrading. I found this "high refresh gaming" thing, and need moar powah!

Under construction/testing is a 7800X, which does get the old EK watercooling system. I need to rehouse it in a new case to see if that helps with the previous vibration problem otherwise I'll replace the pump. I do want a new case regardless. I'm on the edge of ordering a 1080 Ti, but availability seems to be limited at the moment, and I can't decide if I should pay more for a higher end cooler card over a cheaper yet probably still competent like the base EVGA ICX models. Gut feeling is I should get a 3 fan job than a 2 fan one, between the EVGA FTW and Asus Strix. Based on a Gamers Nexus review of both, the Strix seems to have an edge in cooling performance.

Oh, the high refresh monitor I got as a test, I'm half debating replacing already and I only had it a week. I cheeped out and got a 24", and I the pixel density is just on the wrong side of comfortable, so I might re-do in 27", also going IPS as although this is the best TN panel I've ever seen, it still pales against IPS and I'm not sure I can live with it long term.

In a way there is a never ending list of things that could be improved. It doesn't mean they need or should be, but I eventually end up doing it anyway because I can.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, RTX 4070, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Productivity system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, 64GB ram (mixed), RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, random 1080p + 720p displays.
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

I built my system ( in my signature ) over two years ago, and since then the only things that have changed are GPUs, monitors, and coolers.

I'm still very happy with it. Better monitor, and upgraded from 980 to 980Ti, along with changes my dead H110i GT with the Noctua D15s.

The CPU is fine still, and will be for quite some time more. Same for the rest of the system; I'll likely wait and get a Volta, or Navi GPU when those are out.

CPU/Platform will change in another 2 years most likely unless there's a dramatic change in CPU performance before then.

Although I went from my i5 3570K+2x290X to a i7 5820K+RX470 (was supposed to be the dual 290Xs but they kinda died) to a 1700+fury build (current), if I still had my i5 3570K+dual 290X build, I'd probably still be more than happy with the performance although I would have probably looked into getting at least a 3770K if that was still my current build as I remember clearly the i5 struggling to allow me to watch videos and play games at the same time :P

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

i have fx8320 with what was a mid-high end range gigabyte board back then and 16gb low profile ddr3 in a full tower aerocool predator case and a seasonic x-series 650w psu. recently bought a rx 470 card.. so all are pretty much still very usable especially case, psu and graphics card.

Will probably upgrade to a threadripper 1920/1920x (and oc it) when my financials are more stable and motherboard prices go down a bit.

I'm not buying the cheapest stuff anymore, so i'd rather wait untill good stuff gets cheaper instead of rushing now to get cheap low end stuff.

I built my system in 2014. Started with my old 790i Ultra and QX9650 out of storage with a GTX 970, then graduated to a 4670k and now my 4790k. After the 4790k I haven't felt the upgrade bug until now with my 970 not being able to handle my demands. We'll see if Vega can scratch the itch I guess.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

I'm still rockin my 05/2015 setup (see my sig), my only addition was the 525GB MX300 i got on last year's christmas prime deals. Im very happy with it, only thing that bothers me since day one is that the gpu does not turn the fans off during idle ;) but it is acceptable

I don't know if it counts, but I built my computer in late 2015. The only upgrade I did was to the video card and put a 1 TB HDD in it because for some reason I got really bothered my SSD was getting more full than I'd like. Still does everything I want it to.

But I still have the itch to build.

I built my PC in 2010(signature/profile)... I'm still happy with it, I haven't run into a game I can't play by lowering the settings a bit just yet.

Obviously, I upgraded a few things over time, like going from 8GB to 16GB of RAM, new SSDs and a 7970Ghz to replace an aging HD5870...

That said, I do want a to get a new PC, simply because it's really starting to feel old and at this point I wouldn't be surprised if it died randomly like most older electronics. The fact that I got a 4k monitor to replace my older 1200p monitor that died like 2 months ago doesn't help with that feeling. (that was a mistake... Should've gotten a 1440p monitor or something instead, but hey, 4k is still nice... just not for gaming)

Except, my main reason to continue holding out from going out and buying a new PC right now, is that I literally cannot find a graphic card(RX580 for now I guess), that is in stock and isn't overpriced due to miners buying them all. Thus rendering my new PC purchase pointless if I can't have a god damn GPU to go with it. :|

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200

When there's a single GPU that's significantly faster than both 980s i'll upgrade.

The Devil's Canyon i7's still can keep up, I'm rocking a 4790k since its release. Ive also had the same mobo, RAM, storage drive and power supply. All from around 2014. The only upgrades Ive made was the OS drive (to a 950 pro) and the GPU a few times (now a Strix 1080ti). I'm pushing out 3440x1440 games GG EZ

I have been drooling over a lot of new hardware lately, but I'm holding out for a bit longer. I thought I could double reverse convince myself that my setup is still doing fine even though its old, and I only have 4GB of VRAM. So who is happy with a build from a year or two ago? And what are you runnin?

I have a 5820K @4.4, GTX 980 SLI, and an ultrawide at 60hz. This is fine.

Here is the post from when I build it.

I'm just trying to get a feel for owners of computers that were primarily built about 2 years ago.  Have the owners have upgraded, felt the need to, or are still happy.

If you got a really high end setup, it will last a lot longer than the mid end as well as low end ones.

What's the big deal about it.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

I built my computer about 2 years back. Still rocking all the original hardware only changed my R9 380X out for an RX 580 before the mining crisis was a thing. my i5 4690k doesn't seem to hold me back at all.

I still have cpu and motherboard from 2011. I upgraded most of the rest but I'm pretty happy with it for the time being. None of the parts is newer than 2015.
