2015 or earlier setups. Who's still happy?

wonderboyATHF

I have been drooling over a lot of new hardware lately, but I'm holding out for a bit longer. I thought I could double reverse convince myself that my setup is still doing fine even though its old, and I only have 4GB of VRAM. So who is happy with a build from a year or two ago? And what are you runnin?

I have a 5820K @4.4, GTX 980 SLI, and an ultrawide at 60hz. This is fine.

Here is the post from when I build it.

IMG_7668.JPGI'm just trying to get a feel for owners of computers that were primarily built about 2 years ago.  Have the owners have upgraded, felt the need to, or are still happy.

Depends are you talking entire setup age or  particular component? A lot of people spread out upgrades vs entire system overhauls

It's ok.  My 970 is getting kinda old (bad for 4k gaming, fairly adequate for 1440p), i also upgraded my cpu to a i7 4790 from an i5 4590.

Still running a 3570K, not a whole lot of reason to upgrade right now, hopefully Coffee Lake will change that. Only recent parts of my system is the PSU and 1080Ti.

I don't really upgrade (a bit of a bad hardware hoarder).

I am quiet happy with my 5960X I got 2nd hand.  :D  Though, I am more of the type that grabs 2nd hand hardware since I dislike paying full price for hardware.

I will upgrade but I won't sell my old parts. I paid $650 each for those 980s and I cry when I see me on eBay for a tiddlywink.

I'm rocking an i7 4770k @4.5, an R9 295x2, and triple 1920x1080p monitors. It's not that I'm necessarily happy with it, but it does what it can and I'm satisfied with how it performs given its 4 years old. I've basically given up on using eyefinity on any game made after 2015 because there's no way I'll achieve 60fps, but the setup is still great for multi-tasking.

I moved recently, so that drained most of my funds, but maybe in 6 months to a year when I'm in better financial shape I'll look into Vega and Ryzen

I'm pretty happy with my Potatobox 9000, and I haven't totally felt like it's been seriously holding be back for the most part, though in some games (cough GTA V and Cities Skylines cough) the ol G3258 hates life.

And honestly at this point, my 7950 holds me back as much as my Pentium does. That said though, 1060 6GB incoming in god knows when (thanks miners!) and I'd like to get a Ryzen 5 CPU at some point and an el cheapo board (that is of course, assuming more good ITX boards come in, if they don't then a nice ATX board will be the target).

Major reason right there that I rarely buy full price.  Plus, I saw that launch price and well, crap that price.

Well in that case, my core setup below has not changed since I built in in Feb of 2015 cause it still handles anything I throw at it. Only GTA 5 gets close to maxing put the CPU

i7 4790k @ 4.7ghz "Devils Canyon"

Asus Maximum Hero VII Mobo 16gigs

G.Skill Trident X DDR3 2400 RAM Soundblaster Z

Thermalright True Spirit 140 Power

However, I have upgraded since then:

GPU 4 times from a 980, two 980Ti's, a 1080 and now a 1080Ti,

SSD from 500gig 840 Evo to 1 Terabyte 850

PSU from 850watt Corsair to 1050watt Seasonic

Cases from HAF XB EVO to Evolv ATX TG

24'' Dell 1200p monitor to 27'' Dell 1440p

And now its at this state after finishing my "NightFire" case mod project last weekend

My bro had our cousin build him a nice, top o the line rig at the time,

i5 4690k

Gtx 770

Really nice Asus mobo

Dominator platinum (maybe? They are gold)

650 platinum psu

He still uses it and every time I'm like"yo, what do you think of sli? How about a new cpu?" He's like UPGRADE NO!

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

built a few months ago with little to zero budget, Its now got 16Gb and a new motherboard I still need to fit and honestly I'm super happy with it. Little let down by the 470 but If i do upgrade it'll be giving Redstone a 980Ti and moving the 980 into here. Just can't validate some of the Epic over powered rigs some people build. Outside of my 1060 that I got at Christmas, my system is a 2013 build with a i5-4670. Ultimately, even if I didn't replace my 760 FTW, I was still decently happy with my PC almost 4 years later.

Heh, the CPU before I bought my 5820k was the 4670k. And the GPU I had before my 980s was a 760 superclock. Small world, but I'm sure lots of people paired those two in 2013.
