Lenovo Phones Will Now Ship With Completely Stock Android

RadiatingLight

Motorola's near-stock android experience, with useful tweaks like their easy gestures for launching the camera, their other minimal, but functional tweaks to stock android have been nearly unanimously praised by reviewers. now, Motorola Lenovo says that it's new phones will launch with stock android. unfortunately, those Lenovo branded phones won't come with those awesome tweaks that made Motorola phones special, but it's IMO better than bloat.

Motorola's focus on an uncluttered software experience allowed its phones to stand out, and its parent company Lenovo is following suit. The company has confirmed that it is abandoning its Vibe Pure UI skin in favor of stock Android, with the upcoming K8 Note the first phone to ship with Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box.

Effective immediately as far as I can tell, all new Motorola Lenovo phones will ship with stock android

IMO, this is a terrible move, since there's now less to differentiate Motorola from stuff like the pixel, Oneplus, and others.

The stock Android will also mean that it will be more efficiently updated to next Android OS. It also makes it easier to support for extended period of time.

At least this means there will be faster software updates though... if we allow ourselves to trust Lenovo.

Before anyone gets their hopes up, you will still not get updates directly from Google.

Lenovo will still have to modify the ROM to be able to work on their specific phones, which can take significant time depending on how quickly the chip makers move.

Hopefully project Treble will speed this process up on future phones

But since this is on future devices, it's likely they'll be on Android O, and as such have the use of Project Treble, helping to reduce that.

What? This is talking about Lenovo and their phones like the K8 Note and Zuk Z2 Pro, not Moto, who have ran a near stock experience for years now

idk

That's cool. Wish everyone would have stock Android but still retaining neat features and have them all across devices. Also would be great that updates are directly from Google and fatst.

But it still wont receive updates .-.... it wont match nowhere near close what the Pixel will get at least.

OnePlus phones have near stock android but get three or four updates and then "poof" your alone, at least that happened with the OPX and apparently the OP2.

I still cannot understand how people like "stock" Android. I've had analogous or worse results with that butchery and the more bloated iterations of skins like TouchWiz. All this means to me, is that there is no reason for me to look at Lenovo phones in any capacity anymore.

OPO owner here, Cyanogen was the original fw partner, then they had a falling out and released Android 6.0 for the phone, last fw version ever from Cyanogen as they shut down. (good fucking riddance!)

I've got backups of all the original fastboot images as Cyanogen have shut down OTA servers.

It went 4.4.4 > 5.0 > 5.1 > 6.0 then dropped.

OPX was based on the exact same hardware in a different case, iirc it got some firmware versions but it was just OnePlus's way of getting rid of the old OPO PCBs as it was out of service.

5.1.1 > 6.0 then dropped from support.

OP2 just got fucked. Left on 6.0.

It was really the red-haired stepchild of the OnePlus family - badly planned, left to its own devices (heh) and based on the clusterfuck housefire 810 SoC. No NFC also, which it got fucking panned for.

5.1.1  > 6.0 then dropped from support.

idk

I'm pretty sure this is Lenovo, not Motorola. Yes, they're owned by the same parent company, but that doesn't mean they'll follow the same policies. After all, Moto didn't adopt Lenovo's skin, right? I'm not sure why you'd mention Motorola @RadiatingLight, since they were only mentioned once at the beginning of the article showing their relation to Lenovo.

I've had clean roms and fast updates ever since I stumbled onto XDA with my S4. More than that I got better performance, battery life, and ad free browsing. Now my S4 is on Nougat. Don't know whats the big deal here.

Motorola phones have always shipped with a very clean version of android. Lenovo is simply moving closer to stock android with their Lenovo branded phones.

it's only Lenovo phones as far as I can tell.

Good move.

Lenovo makes phones?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

My Zuk Z2 is full of random Chinese bloatware. Not exactly "near stock".

Actually, my previous phone was a BLU advance 5.0 hd (a $70 smartphone) came with a "near stock" experience. I don't know why this is news.

Moto have a near stock experience.

Lenovo have random Chinese bloatware everywhere.

Does this mean that Google will be pushing the updates to the device? If so, I'm putting Lenovo phones on the shopping list.

Sadly not, as Lenovo have to modify the ROM so it can work on their specific phones as @LAwLz pointed out earlier.
