Dell is releasing the U2518D monitor, it has a 2560x1440 WQHD IPS panel and is HDR compatible. The 25"monitor has a 60Hz refresh rate with a 1000:1 static contrast and 178°/178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles.

 

The monitor is capable of 99% sRGB coverage but only has a typical 350 cd/m² maximum brightness, which for HDR is low. True 8-bit colour is supported and the monitor is ragged at a 5ms grey to grey response time is specified.

 

Here's the thing that caught my eyes: the monitor offers support for ‘Dell HDR’ (High Dynamic Range) and here is the conundrum, it is a simulated slash software-based HDR mode that responds to HDR10 content. So this display doesn’t support the colour gamut, peak luminance or indeed bit-depth required for a ‘true HDR’ experience. It could still make HDR10 content better looking, but seems to be just be a marketing gimmick.

This is almost as bad as when companies started sticking 'VR Ready' on everything. 

I wouldn't be surprised if Razer makes a keyboard with "VR optimized switches"

I'd say "well it's not exactly false advertising" considering they advertise their HDR "solution" as Dell HDR but then I read a bit lower and saw they advertised:

"View your HDR10 content3 like it was meant to be seen."

I'm not surprised.

 

Unfortunately TV manufacturers have been doing this exact same thing for the past 2 years, including this years models. Many of them "support" HDR10, as in they can take the input and process the metadata, however only have 8-bit panels to output to. Some TV manufacturers this year and last have taken an intermediate step where by they advertise a "10 bit-panel" however you find its 8-bit with 2-bit dithering. Very rarely do you find a true 10-bit panel apart from the much higher end.

TVs are used for media consumption

but monitors can be very well used for content creation, and when the panel is not as advertised, well ....

DELL sais this monitor is 99% REC709 - that's just bull

100% agree, the industry as a whole needs to stop this fake marketing crap and misleading consumers who don't know better and are just looking for a product to do what it is "advertised" as doing.

 

I do know TV enthusiasts who want to get the best possible image from TV's and are willing to pay thousands to get it, so I do think it is important there also.

Well that sucks. Already there are different HDR standards and all so like seeing HDR10 be the go to for all would be great.

the marketing term HDR pisses me off because of this. 

Just like how 1366x768 laptop screens are 'beautiful hd panels' since HD is 1280x720

I just wanted something that is more rigid and more exact idk 

 

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

oh the marketing makes me so fucking irrationly angry, you can't brag about a screen when it's literally the shittiest panel they make these days. They don't make non "HD" panels for laptop size! At least, I've had trouble finding even new 1280x720 ones even a few years ago. I wanted to hook up a controller to a panel and play 720 console games natively, which believe me makes a huge difference.

Dell HDR is to real HDR, what Kaby Lake X is too HEDT: A complete joke and an outright ripoff. No wide colour gamut, only 8 bit colour, and low static contrast ratio. I guess HDR isn't technically registered, so Dell can call it whatever, but it's an outright scam.
