Ethereum Mining Frenzy Leads To German Graphics Card Shortage, Retailer Pulls Cards

It's me!

Well, here's the deal. If they cant get them in Europe for three months then there is zero doubt, at least in my mind, that they will start pulling them from shelves in the US.

They will start pulling them at smaller retailers first, but I imagine it's only a matter of time.

Quote

If MindFactory is any indicator, we might soon see retailers pull the products from their shelves entirely. There's just no sense in listing products that you won't be able to sell for who-knows-how-long.

Quote

Dear  Customer,

Thank you for your request.

In fact we ordered the GPU`s but because of the high demand on the RX and GTX graphic cards which is related to BitCoin farming the manufacturer can not give us a delivery date. We expect a delivery time of at least 3 months.

This shortage affects the whole of Germany, maybe even whole Europe.

I do not have Information on new products that did not hit our shop yet.

1. No?

2. Of course, OP isn't saying the shortage is regional (he explicitly mentions the US). Just the retailer saying Europe because that's where they do business; they wouldn't know or care about the rest of the world.

3. Actually pulling products from shelves is new information; it's a more drastic consequence of the shortage we already know about.

Your terminology is incorrect. Pulling products from shelves means they have stock, and they're not selling it either due to defect or possible flaw. Do you mean discontinuing the product? That would make more sense.

Nobody uses physical store shelves any more. Yes, they're taking SKUs out of their online shop.

That's a ridiculous comment considering how hilariously inaccurate it is, but ok.

So the products are temporarily discontinued then.

1. This is not reporting on the existence of the mining craze.

2. Well let's see whether he talked about the US, thus acknowledging that it isn't a regional issue limited to Europe:

3. Unknown delivery dates and delisting are not the same thing. The latter means they've found out that the delivery date is definitely so far off that it doesn't make sense to sell the cards.

The store? Why? They dont have that product physically to sell and wont for some time, it is better if they simply de-list it until they get a reliable ETA to reduce customer confusion.

Man I'm glad I bought my hardware ahead of time. Recently sold my 1060 for 400€, which equates to about 160€ in profit. When prices go back down I'm going to buy a GTX 1070:)

I am currently making about $4 AUD /day with my 1070, its costs me around 90c or so a day for power (24c/KWh), its not hard to see that I can easily make a profit (Used to be making upwards of $6 after power, market is a little unstable ATM and less buyers on Nicehash).

Looking at my NiceHash overview for this week, a 1070 makes 0.001 - 0.0013 BTC per day, which currently translates to € 2.2-2.4

The card uses around 150-160W if you didn't undervolt it, which translates to roughly 3.8KWh per day.  Based on the €0.25 per KWh you stated, that's €0.96 per day in electricity.

So the net profit currently would be around €1.2-1.4 per day ... assuming you don't have to spend money on the card first.

I assume that people in other EU countries order GPUs from Germany. Countries such as Poland, Czechia... have much cheaper electricity costs but often slightly higher GPU prices.

@Captain Chaos

I agree with you.
