Warning: The UK PM calling for near total regulation of the internet

Prysin

Here we go, we knew it was coming, but it is coming fast

Quote

New international agreements should be introduced to regulate the internet in the light of the London Bridge terror attack, Theresa May has said.

The Prime Minister said introducing new rules for cyberspace would “deprive the extremists of their safe spaces online” and that technology firms were not currently doing enough.

The Act, championed by Ms May, requires internet service providers to maintain a list of visited websites for all internet users for a year and gives intelligence agencies more powers to intercept online communications. Police can access the stored browsing history without any warrant or court order.

So if it wasnt bad enough right now, the UK is going to get worse, While this isnt exactly definitive news, we now have officials going public about pursuing an even more hardline approach then we see today.

No way it'll happen. I'm sure they'll find a way to regulate minor things, but it's impossible to regulate the entire internet. If they try too hard, the people will definitely resist. I can't imagine many people of either side of the political spectrum supporting this. (maybe the far far left or far far right, but thats a minority)

Wishing leads to ambition and ambition leads to motivation and motivation leads to me building an illegal rocket ship in my backyard.

The Conservative manifesto pledges regulation of the internet, including forcing internet providers to participate in counter-extremism drives and making it more difficult to access pornography.

The Act, championed by Ms May, requires internet service providers to maintain a list of visited websites for all internet users for a year

This part is sorta comedic.  How, exactly, are they supposed to do that?  Are they supposed to install devices (proxies) that watch every page that's visited?  Adding L7 devices into the path of folks at home is going to seriously impact performance.

On the other end of the spectrum, a simple DNS data recorder.  Well, that's easy to either get around or completely fuck with.  What's to stop me from setting up my own caching name server at home?  Answer: nothing.  Then they'll never see any A records I request, they'll just see the IP addresses of the servers I connect to.  That won't help.

And if I want to fuck with their DNS record keeping?  Well, hell, a script that does random digs against their DNS servers to any number of millions of websites out there.  Constantly.

This is just silly.

Sad to see what's come of UK politics. They're so god damn focused on being politically correct that it destroys their own country with stupid laws.

It's a Religion. Or part of one, to be specific. Thus, to reject the Political Correctness is to be a heretic.  Ever wonder why they punish people so harshly when they step out of line?

Seen some awesome degradation vids, but that's a bit offtopic. But it's all legal, and should not be blocked and/or banned. And what about them people who like same gender. If it's for child safety... (kids seeing stuff, not the interaction with...)

*calls up ISP* Yes, hello. I live in my moms basement, and I want to watch some porn. Please unblock *insert random gay porn site here*... Think lots of people would be pissed off at this. (excluding them golden shower fans)

The other way will be worse. The laws will be the same, just less defined and broader so they do not target a single group in particular.

As an American, I'd like to point out that, by Constitutional Amendment, they banned Alcohol in the early part of the 20th Century.

Never, ever, underestimate the levels of stupid that politicians can get up to.

Part of the manifesto wants it off social media too. Honestly never seen any pron while browsing facebook. Probably not liking those pages that happen to post it though.

There was the whole beheading video a while back doing to rounds (the one with the chainsaw). But that's just LiveLeak stuff anyway. Just noobs sharing and liking rubbish.

It doesn't matter because no one cares about effectiveness in any measurable way. It's like airport security and carry-on luggage restrictions: the key is to pass some measures that sound like we're doing something about it and move on.

I agree, but travel restrictions aren't nearly as restrictive as restricting something like the internet, which effects practically everyone. Although I do see them getting some places with this. Unfortunately, it looks as if governments are just going to slowly strip away our freedoms until we're left with nothing at all.
