U.S. Government Begins Modernizing its IT

Donald Trump signed an executive order recently that spawned a technology council to oversee the modernization of U.S. governmental IT systems.

Officially called the American Technology Council, Chris Liddell will be its director. He is the White House director of strategic initiatives, and former Microsoft and General Motors co chief financial officer.

This was brought about by a GAO report last year that reported that government IT investments "are becoming increasingly obsolete: many use outdated software languages and hardware parts that are unsupported." Some government systems have 50+ year-old components, and the machine that's largely responsible for the U.S. nuclear arsenal's coordination is so old that it still uses floppy disks.

The council is chaired by Trump and includes the defense secretary, homeland security secretary, budget director and director of national intelligence.

 

 

Well, I think that this is definitely a good thing, and hopefully this'll reduce the number of security breaches like the ones that have plagued the U.S. government recently.

This is one of those things that the last several president should have been focused on instead of the stupid crap they have been *cough* ACA *cough*. The pentagon and several other agencies have been requesting and complaining about the condition of these systems for years now and none of the previous administrations have been willing to address the issue. Even Obama made the off hand comment that it was an unnecessary expense (No I do not have the source atm to quote). I am glad to see the is being address by this administration. there is nothing wrong with using floppy disks apart from that they are maybe not being produced anymore, i don't really see why that is mentioned. security vulnerability's and reliability is something we should worry about, everything else doesn't matter. a lot of banks still use very very VERY old machines (some still have 60's era mainframes as their system critical machines) because their whole infrastructure depends on it and it still does the job it needs to do 99% of the time, they are just replacing it in the recent years. it reminds me of that time that guy from last week tonight ridiculed a government organ for using tape drives as storage lmao. i mean this initiative is good, i'm just weary of its execution. it wouldn't be the first time a politician has good intentions but fucks it up because of their complete misunderstanding of the subject. this is generally a problem seen a lot in IT. the nerds are doing their thing and the directors are doing their thing and nobody really understands each other which leads to a LOT of inefficiency.

Note that my reference was to them starting to run out of 8" FDD.....because they do eventually wear out.

yea they do eventually wear out but there's still plenty in circulation, and even if those where completely run down they could use floppy drive emulators, which are invented exactly because of industrial control equipment drives wearing out :P

To be honest I'm more comfortable with control of systems like that requiring the use of physical media, like floppy disks, and not being connected to a network. Last thing we need, at best, is some kid playing Global Thermonuclear War.

I agree, but it would still be better to use something more modern than floppies.

Or for better security they could use tape reels (I think they still do in some environments) or Zip Disks, fairly sure that not many people remember those media...
