Humans have two eyes. 2160 is the horizontal. 1200 is the vertical. Half of the display is for one eye, the other half for the other. So you split the horizontal and keep the vertical and each eye gets 1080x1200

What 2017 GPU is going to push those pixels?? For now a decent bump up on the HTC Vive 1 resolution while staying at 90Hz would be preferable.

well it could just be an announcement to what they are going to aim for with like a release date for 2018 or something like that.

I think for next iteration they should go with 2160 x 2400 per eye at the same 90Hz. That will be big noticeable improvement over the current model, and still the most high end GPUs will be able to drive it.

Not unless they switch to a proper RGB panel rather than the current TFT display

This sounds like it'll be more expensive than the first vive. Is that really a good idea? Im sure the vive hasn't paid for itself yet...

So far all VR games can at 90 FPS on a 1060. More graphically intensive VR titles will need serious horsepower but Vega/Volta is a thing

Something is off here. Work shown in the spoiler.

Even assuming they were foolish and meant 2160x4800 total and not actually 4k per eye, that's 10.3 Megapixels.

 

Assuming they stick with 24 bit color instead of moving to 30 bit, that's .23 Gigabits per frame.

 

At 120 frames per second you're up to 27.8 Gigabits per second.

 

Now assuming you're using Display Stream Compression that drops to 9.26 Gigabits per second in the best compression cases before the DisplayPort overhead. Display Stream Compression is designed for visually lossless low compression rates, with low latency so it's a good match for VR.

WiGig's max bandwidth is 7Gigabits per second and about 5Gigabits before overhead for the WiGig Display Extension, but assuming best case scenarios this video stream would require 9.26 Gigabits per second unless using something like H.265 for further compression... 

 

Official guess is that it's full resolution over DisplayPort/HDMI and quarter resolution over wireless. This would still take advantage of the higher density of the higher res screens in the Vive 2 without resorting to highly lossy and unreliable compression.

 

Even with 30bit color you'd wind up with ~3-5Gbits per second for the video stream at quarter resolution if it is 2160x4800, which is perfectly attainable over WiGig

Umm... DisplayPort 1.4 handles a 4k monitor over a wire at as much as 240Hz so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

So 8K. Which is totally doable on most VR games but the required hardware will need a serious bump. Maybe upscaling and the pixel density will make up for lower res?

All current GPU's from AMD or Nvidia support DP 1.4 and they use the same cable as DP 1.2

The wireless connection may not be WiFi... maybe laser transmiter that will come with the headset? I cant possibly see how else it could work.

Ah, I really hope those specs aren't real. As a dev, I can't imagine the headache of trying to meet an even more ridiculous minimum spec. 

 

However, I'm all for a new Vive. Especially if they have those new controllers they were showing off at Steam Dev Days.

I'm not even sure the flagship GPUs in 2018 and 2019 can do that... It'll probably be close :/. Right now 1440p per eye is the max we can hope for.
