Want to live with your waifu in real life? With this hologram, you can.

Blasphemous Theoretical

Quote

Its product, Gatebox, is set to be a device with similar functions to Amazon's Echo, but with one particular difference -- a fully realised holographic, interactive, AI personality contained within.

This is something akin to the Amazon Echo that was developed by a Japanese company for the purpose of being able to live together with a character. It can control your household appliances through the Internet of Things, so you can be returning from work for example and it will turn on your lights for you. However, the main purpose seems to be companionship for lonely people, and always having someone at home waiting for you. I'll admit, even I felt a bit cringey watching the video, but I'd totally buy one of these if they weren't so darn expensive and had more characters you could choose from. Maybe when they make a V2, it will be more appealing (as it always is with new technologies, you pay a lot for an unpolished product at first, but later versions refine the concept and make it more affordable.)

Pre-orders are already available on their site, but I think it's limited to something around 300 units only. The price is 298,000 yen, which is about $2,500. Currently it only supports Japanese language, but there are plans to add English support later on. Here's their site if you want find out more: http://gatebox.ai/

Just think lads.
A future where you can fuck your robo-waifu is almost upon us.
The future is truly bright and lewd.

On the real, this is pretty cool though.
More than this, can you imagine other applications for this? I mean holograms, wow, there's a lot of potential there for both innovation and engineering.
I know it's not open air-type holograms or the first of it's kind but still, very cool stuff.

You know, i think this is awesome for hotels or something.

Scan in your best friend, SO or whatever, put them on a USB drive, pop it into a hologram thingy in your hotel and tadaa, they are with you, sort of :D

Yes there are a lot more details to work out to get such thing going, but i can see this being quite a big thing in the future :P

Agreed. I think holograms and AR have a very bright future.

Can I imagine? Not really. What could the applications be?

Regarding the promo video, I found it depressing, a bit in the human-shaped pillow line. The message was sort of "There is no people in your life. But you can fake it". Which could be true I guess, but that's the depressing part: that getting fake "miss you" messages could be an improvement.

it fits this trend to "humanize" our interaction with electronic devices (Siri, Cortana, Google pretending to "join the conversation" with its in-chat, redacted interventions, etc), though.

I watched the other trailer on reddit and it is the saddest thing I've watched in a while. "You know, somebody's home for me, feels great". Wow. The work culture in Japan must be soul draining

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

it's not the waifu part that makes it weird for me. It's Japan. It's the replacing human companionship with an...."AI", and I use that in the loosest sense of the term.

Maybe its because I've neck deep in japanese culture since i was a kid but I think a digitial companion would be pretty neat to have. But I dont think that it could, or should replace human companionship And I know that this is what this product i aiming for.

So just remove that aspect and its really neat. A visual "AI" to handle task like echo and the google one.

I would be interested to see how this develops.
