Microsoft to remove GWX from Windows 7 and 8.1

AlTech

Microsoft has officially issued an update to remove the infamous "Get Windows 10 App" from PCs running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 .

And Microsoft has set the price of Windows 10 Home to $119 USD for EVERYONE.

To get the update removing GWX, go here ->  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3184143

Quote

The "Get Windows 10" app has been the source of some controversy for Microsoft, with many Windows 7 and 8.1 users complaining that the app was trying too hard to make them upgrade to Windows 10.

While officially, the free upgrade offer has ended, there is evidence that people with valid Windows 7 and 8.1 keys can still get Windows 10 for free, which could mean Microsoft is giving those users a bit longer to make their decision.

At least schools usually get a discount.

If it were up to me all schools would use chromebooks or something with GNU/Linux. It would save tax money and teach people how to actually use a computer rather than how to use a specific program suite from a specific corporation (which forces them to keep buying that software because they can't use anything else). It's not out of luck that MS and Adobe are so dominant in the market.

I think that Schools can choose to use Windows 10 Education edition for free but Pro Edition isn't for them.

It updated your OS to the new one for free? Sorry but when I could install a pirated cracked copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for FREE, how is that any different than getting a new OS for FREE? It's super simple.

First we had people complaining it was forcing them to upgrade to Windows 10, NOW we have people complaining that Windows 10 is too expensive... I mean... really people. xD You're making me wanna bait everyone even more... :P

If you buy a device which is 8 inches or under then Windows is free on that device.

Also, who's gonna pay for the 10K +  engineers working on Windows?

I don't want to pirate an OS and update to to get a half dodgy half legit copy, - thats a VERY differnet topic

Whats the difference between BMW giving me a free car as a gift, or me killing the driver of one in the street and keeping it for myself?

It IS expensive, MacOS, Free, Linux, Free, Windows = expensive, yet its necessary for many people, most consumers will buy a computer with it already included, but for enthusiasts why should we pay so much money just for the OS?

And this is news?

Windows is "free" or at least included on most consumer laptops, tablets and desktops, or at least a subsidised price

Erm the millions of people buying windows PCs, and they might lower windows piracy if its cheaper, like all the people who build PCs and pirate windows.....

its not news the guy said it was free, but it was only a free update

MS Office, MS licensing for OEMs, businesses paying for extended support. Microsoft makes money by virtue of us simply using their os, no matter if we paid for it or not. Their business revolves about their monster install base, which is why in early windows versions they put up pirated copies themselves and why windows 10 was a free upgrade for a year.

So maybe in 2 years when there's plenty of DX12 titles out and they come down to 60... I'll think about it then.

The funny thing is... Microsoft isn't losing money from this venture of theirs. They even stated that unlicensed copies and legitimate copies of Windows 7 would be upgraded to 10 and activated accordingly, free of charge for that year period. :P

Dindn't anyone use the psuedo upgrade where you get your digital entitlement on the Microsoft Servers but you just reinstall the old OS.

I did that with my Key and I have checked it worked after the free upgrade ended.

If you ever are going to use Windows 10 just get a second hard drive, intall and activate Windows 10 on it and then switch back to your old OS as this gives you the option to upgrade later on.
