If you're worried about your OS spying on you, you should be more worried about your router or your ISP.

Once the packet leaves your computer, it's at the mercy of the next hop.

That's like saying you shouldn't vaccinate yourself because hunger is a more common cause of death.

Nope. Anything that touched your modem or router, your ISP knows. It gets directed to its servers to redirect to a destination.

Packets can be read. Encrypted data transferred can be decrypted.

Your direct ISP is your direct ISP. Anything that touches your modem, your ISP knows. Your ISP is whom will push out your packets to other interconnected ISPs/routers (basically, the Internet)

No, properly encrypted data using up-to-date standards can not be decrypted from what we know. Not in any reasonable time frame. Sure, if my ISP buys a super computer and spends like 100 years on it then yes, it can be broken, but that's unreasonable. To say that your ISP knows everything you do on the Internet, especially now that HTTPS is so widely used, is ridiculous.

Also, some of us has really good ISPs which would rather get sued, or offer all users free VPN connections to circumvent laws, than log and give out their users' data.

Yep, and on top of that you ISP have no access to stuff stored locally on your PC. In contrast spyware10 have access to everything on your PC and on your LAN... 9_9

If either side the information can be decrypted, than the flaw on the system which the NSA was shown to be able to penetrate. Information can be logged, and take more time to decrypt it.

Yes absolutely. NSA could for example use a backdoor in your OS to get the encrypted information. That's another reason why you should be very careful with which OS you choose.

;)

No but seriously, you are basically trying to say "since there is a possibility that someone might compromise the server you are connecting to, you shouldn't care about security/privacy of your OS". That's flat out a moronic way of thinking about it. You might as well be saying "you can't vaccinate yourself against cancer so why are you vaccinating yourself against measles?". Because some people want to minimize the risk, and protect themselves in the ways they can.

Do you lock your door when you leave your house? Why? They can still break in though your window so why not just leave it unlocked? Same logic.
