motorcyclists's "Google Glass"

Youbetternot

Skully P-1 helmet is a helmet that has a heads-up display with a rear-facing camera which can rotate 180 degrees. Which the helmet can let you see what is behind you and what is going on right in your face. Basically like a Iron man suit, but just the helmet. The helmet it self does not look half bad, looks pretty cool in fact. Linus should unbox and do a test drive with this, however it it is expected to cost more then $1,000. SO we probably won't see a unboxing unless linus gets a sample.

Basic picture

Motorcycle helmets are a simple safety measure -- they keep your noggin safe from objects and falls that would otherwise do it harm. But what if your helmet could help prevent you from getting into an accident in the first place? Marcus Weller, founder of Skully, asked just that question, and the answer he came up with is the P-1 helmet. It's a brain bucket that packs a 180-degree FOV rear-facing camera and a micro-controller running a customized version of Android to deliver navigation and video information to a custom-constructed HUD (similar to Google Glass). And, it takes voice commands so that riders can see where they're going or what's behind them, all in hands-free fashion. To provide such functionality, the P-1 has a fin mounted atop the DOT-approved helmet that houses the aforementioned hardware, plus GPS, Bluetooth, an accelerometer, gyro, compass and a rechargeable battery. The plan is for the P-1 to become available for purchase next spring in matte black or gloss white, and it'll be marketed as an ultra-premium helmet (translation: expect it to cost over $1,000).

Back Ground -  As it turns out, the idea for the Skully P-1 was born on the streets of Barcelona. Weller was living in the Spanish city a couple years ago and had the misfortune of getting into an accident on his motorcycle while he was searching for road signs to find his way -- that distraction kept him from seeing the car that did him in. Thankfully, he wasn't seriously injured, and that experience gave him a moment of clarity: what if his helmet gave him directions so he could keep his eyes on the road? Upon returning to the US, he decided to build just that.

This would get expensive if you came off having to buy a new one every time, or even dropping it.

Well the helmet is pretty solid I hope. I don't really think you would need to buy a new one everytime. I mean it should last you at least 2 years.

You're supposed to get a new helmet every time you crash, you can get away with dropping it though

EDIT: it would be good if they also sold just the shell too so you can replace that or only the parts that need replacing

As a motorcyclist myself, I would pay 1000 easy for that but it would depend on the helmet tech used and how safe it was. I'll do a bit of research on the manufacturer and post again :)

Ok, without actually trying one I would not buy it. I was looking for more info in reviews and no one who knew motorcycle gear was reviewing it, only tech websites who know nothing about motorcycle gear. There is no talk of the padding, comfort, safety (other than the basic safety standards it meets and its "high standards"), noise isolation, airflow inside, cooling, anti fog system and so on. Ok, I mean some of the reviews touched on it but nothing in depth. AND none of the normal motorcycle gear reviewers I trust have reviewed it. Plus the main stuff I could find on them from before is just novelty stuff...

So no, not unless I could try it on and get a full spec sheet in store. The HUD looks nice but my safety is way more important, not to mention my comfort and driving fatigue

Well maybe the people you trusted did not get hands on, on the product yet. Since it is going to be released next spring

Can't really vote on the poll when I can't pretend I am a motorcyclist since I am one.

Joking aside, I wouldn't mind paying $1000 for a helmet with HUD as long as the other aspects of it (such as safety, comfort, noise isolation etc...)  is top class. I'm always against listening to music while riding as it one element of your environment away from you but that is just myself. As long as the HUD is non-intrusive it is going to be nice to have the extra information and not having to look down to see the GPS screen. I'm just worried how much the battery in it is going to weigh as I hate heavy helmets ....

Eh...if I was a motorcyclist I wouldn't buy it.

I would be too concerned with trying to pass cars that are most likely going to hit/side swipe me than to try and interact with it.

Hmm.... Actually that is one aspect I forgot it had... Why does a biker want to look back? Other than checking to see if the cops are on your ass I have never looked back in my life :D

No but seriously, I'm starting to think more and more its just a gimmick helmet
