Maybe AMD didn't realize that it's 2016 and not 2014. Nobody should be fooled, the RX 480 will be struggling to perform 1080p maxed settings within a year. There already are games a 970 can't max at 1080p with 60 FPS.

My modded Skyrim makes me wish I had gotten a Fury Nano while I could. dips down to 40fps in quite a few areas-even with grass density turned down in verdant.

Verdant is junk for performance. Other grass mods look good enough but a metric ton easier on your resources.

I don't understand why people are bashing AMD for. The only claim they made was CF RX480 is faster than 1080 in Ashes.

 

Most of you got caught up in the click bait articles' artificial hype. You only have yourselves to blame for the disappointment.

So here it is ladies and gentleman. If you are from the US, 

 

The 480 (4GB) is 50-60 USD cheaper than a 970. The former sits between 199 and I assume would max out at around 210, while the cheapest 970 I could find was a blower style 970 for $260. The better ones are obviously a little more expensive, but the same will apply to better 480s when they launch.

 

Also if you are from Australia, this card is definitely better value. 4GB 480 retails at $319 while 970s retail at $429 (ironically enough for the exact same 970 I talked about earlier). Unfortunately the custom 970s are past $449. It appears prices in Europe are a lot different though. 

 

They perform roughly the same, though the 480 has a lot of outliers where it performs substantially better than usual e.g. Quantum Break, Hitman i.e. DX12 games. The benches are still all over the place so that's for you guys to judge. 

 

You should really only be buying this card if you have a 960 or worse. All in all, I think many of us were expecting better but regardless, it is still probably the best value card on the market and anyone who is looking to build a new PC will find this card as an extremely attractive option. Knowing AMD's history with their cards i.e. Hawaii chips, Fury X, even cards like the 7970 (280X), this card will probably get much better with age. I wouldn't be surprised if in not too long, this card is handily beating the 980, just like how the 290X ended up beating the 780 (quite easily) shockingly the 780 Ti.. don't bargain on that though at all. 

 

This card was subject to extreme hype and that caused us to mainly be disappointed in the end. Although we still have aftermarket cards to come which should be quite good to see, what we have now isn't what we hoped for, but once again, that's what hype does.

with a 14nm process node, AMD is not capable to achieve the same power efficiency as nVidia did with a 28nm node - and to make matter worse for AMD, nVidia managed to cram more transistors in a 16nm node with marginally better power draw

 

when AMD insisted going with GloFo's 14nm FinFET, they made a huge mistake

That is the thing that I just figured out too.

 

Every new gen card come out, ppl that already owned the last gen card gonna be "disappointed". Because they think that the new card is gonna be a BEAST. 

They always hope that the new gen card is gonna give them 2x,3x performance.

 

However for the new comer, buying the latest gen card is never gonna be a bad idea. 

Cos FPS/Dollar is higher, TPD is lower, more and more software features implemented in it.

I think the RX 480 should be cheaper, $200 max for a decent aftermarket 8GB version. The GTX 970 was already getting close to the $250 range, and the previous generation's cards are long-overdue for a price drop, a bigger one than the RX 480 is causing. That price drop should be happening due to the new generation being more powerful, and not from it being less powerful and being priced beneath it.

Now remember the RX480 still has horrible drivers when compared to the matured ones on the 970. It is also reference and the 970s benched are after market cooler with GPU boost. Also look at the performance jump on AMD titles. Insane. Finally look at benchmarks of the 970 in GTA V and Mirrors Edge and so on. When it runs out of Vram which it does a lot the performance goes out the window and it is unplayable. Yet a 380X can beat it easy at higher res due to 8gb of Vram

Re 1: I know we are. I'm trying to say, so what? Jumped two tiers yes, but also is in a completely different bracket. If the 1060 jumps 2 tiers as well then this point has relevance. What relevance does this tier jump have if they're 2 completely different architecture tiers and 2 completely different  prices?

 

Re 2: The 2x performance per watt. was to the respective company's current line up. 390 TDP and such cut in half was about the same as the 980ti cut in half, that's expected. The 480 is about half the TDP for the 390, with the TDP of the 1080 having a TDP that is 50ish% better than the 980ti. Same crap cooler, same crap results, not because lack of efficiency, but because the 480's similarly performing previous generation's card (390) ran at about the same TDP at the 980ti.

 

Re 3: I explained that part badly, that was my bad. It's impressive because that 2x performance per watt is from the 390/290, not the 980ti or Nvidia's side.

i think the 4GB version is gonna be good for AMD as a company. By a good margin it's the fastest $200 GPU, also best price/performance, best performance/watt etc. They can move a lot of units in that price range.

The 480 has more transistors than the 970 while consuming slightly more power. Seems about right in transistor/power.

I'm not trying to say that it's unfair, I'm trying to say your comparing the wrong things. yeah, the 1080 jumped two tiers, and the 480 jumped one, for certain. But the 1080 also is a different architecture tier, Nvidia's high end. It's their big gun. Polaris, in every way, shape, or form is AMD's secondary, their side-arm. Yeah, the 480 is the same efficiency as the 1080/1070, but the 2*performance per watt was to the respective company's last line up. The 1080/1070 being from the 980ti/980 are of course going to be better in that regard than the 480, because the 480 is coming off of the 390, which had about the same, if not worse, TDP and thermals than the 980ti/980, not to mention the 390 performed worse than the two.

Maybe some people should watch this one. Some german "gaming" site did some "ghetto" replacement for the cooling on the 480

and got it to 1350/2250 stable with max temps of 60C under full load .. doesnt sound to bad if you ask me. ^^

The RX 480 appears to be less powerful than a GTX 970, both stock and overclocked. The GTX 970 was a mid-range card 1.8 years ago, and graphics standards progress over time. We now have new standards for mid-tier, which is probably a GTX 980 - GTX 1070.

 

The RX 480 is not a mid-range card right now, but is an upper-low-end card. The same goes for the GTX 970, which will probably be outperformed by the GTX 1060.
