Samsungs new 1TB M.2 SM961 Review - 3,500 MB/s and 330,000 IOPS

Samsung finally released its new SM961 SSD, which is the faster follow-on to the 950 Pro. This thing is a screamer, they get it to hit 3,500 MB/s of sequential throughput, and it is just the small M.2 model. It also has 1 TB of capacity, which only the Toshiba XG series has, which no one buys, and the OCZ RD400, which is almost DOUBLE the price of this little SSD. They were really impressed with the SSD, and said it is the fastest on the market. I think i would like one of these for my laptop, as this should be future-proof, no one needs more than a 100K IOPS in the first place. 

 

I think this thing pretty much KILLS the Intel 750, which is slower and fits in a PCIe slot. The 750 is not a M.2, and also is slower, and draws MUCH more power. The SM961 appears to be the future of SSDs imo.

Samsung spec’d random performance at 450,000 read and 320,000 write IOPS. There are a few snippets from a leaked datasheet, more specifically an image, that suggest the SM961 1TB provides up to 400,000 random write IOPS. We chose to publish the more realistic 320,000 IOPS.

I'm stunned.

Athlon X2 for only 27.31$   Best part lists at different price points   Windows 1.01 running natively on an Eee PC

mmmehh.. kinda useless for a normal computer user, gamer..... you'll never need that speed for anything.. at least not in the near future... but yeah.. it was time for a real m.2 ssd

Neither is it aimed at that group of people. That's like saying how an Aventador is useless for city driving. Which is not the point of the car. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

That's a lot of dollars for a small amount of raw resources...

 

Sure R&D, manufacturing, marketing and RMA is included in the price, but damn!

Cool..... Looks like I'll be looking at a 960 pro or Intel optane ssd for my next ssd (if I ever need another one, of course)...

That's for OEMs and system builders,

consumer variant should come as a 960 Pro later this year or next, just like with SM951 and 950 Pro and before that the 800 series

 

 

But I think for people that already own a 950Pro or any other NVMe drive... there won't be any real upgrade until Intel comes out with Optane on XPoint late next year

Actually it's the follow up to the SM951, which is the OEM version. 950 Pro is a little bit different, and with a black pcb.

This is the OEM version. There will be a 960 Pro with a black pcb soon.

I am currently using Samsung's 950 Pro. It's a beast of an SSD. I would love to see those on PCIe though as all motherboards I know supports single one of those only. Meaning any expansion would require to go to SATA lanes again.

Apparently there are people trying to build ridiculous systems to minimize boot loading time, that ought to help them in some way :)

That would move the bottleneck on your system to the cpu or ram. For people like linus having tons of datas that could be useful :)
