Murica! Anyway, the British version of conservatives wants to have the UK completely leave the EU, mostly for sovereign and border reasons. Meanwhile, the progressive Brits want to stay in the EU for the economy's sake. The election is on June 23 to decide. That's a very very watered down version :P

David Cameron promised to let Britain have its say on things if he got voted, he did and he called this as a vote. Most people believe we pay a lot to be in the EU and its true we do, we also get a lot of pricing reductions on large trade deals to other countries and such, youtube for all the pros and cons. Beware its a shitstorm of facts without references that contradict other facts.

Personally my top reasons are voting Stay are
1.Elon Musk and Bill gates said to.

2.The people saying not to vote are not people I like, support or understand.
3.Ignoring what all the facts actually say because none of them have references, I found a lot more "not important" or "based on sexism, racism or hate" reasons to leave
4.The whole point of the EU is to prevent conflict and any time any single conflict is created it can be traced back to at some point one country/group/person believes to be better than another.
5. It takes a lot to get back in the EU and every single one of the current EU countries has to say Yes or No separately so there is no guarantee we get back in. We risk many things like the pound devaluing (everything could cost tens of pounds more, making your savings and every £ you own less valuble) and a lot of businesses and companies paying a lot more while the government pays less for EU membership.

But most important take nothing I say as truely correct, do your own research and believe nothing without a trusted source of where the fudge it came from

A good watch for people wondering why sovereignty is a good thing in this case. An EU superstate is not a good idea while the EU is as undemocratic as it is. If Britain doesn't leave now, they'll be forced into this superstate, which I'm sure lots of Brits wouldn't enjoy.

Im only a few minutes in and I hope this remains mature but first thoughts are this is very one sided, going by the assumptions of worst case scenarios, assuming the super state is forceful, almost as if its a nazi takeover of some sort.

My first questions are:

3. they'll be forced into this superstate. When has any country ever been forced into doing anything. Maybe groups, maybe wars but no country is ever forced.
4. About the EU army, that is a single persons view. If it becomes an actual thing I will then promise to vote leave, but not over speculation

As an Australian, I would hope they vote to stay. If they leave though, I have a lot to gain in the short term if the pound loses value as I import quite a lot of goods from the UK.

Personally, I want to leave the EU. I would like an independent country again where the people that live in the country make the rules for it. At the moment people who live in Brussels make the majority of our decisions for us and I do not think that is right.

 

That is my main reason for wanting to leave but as soon as people hear that I am in the leave camp, they usual brand me as racist before giving me a chance to explain.

 

To put it into context for the 'Muricans, it is like having a committee in Mexico, Canada or somewhere that isn't even your country making your rules and telling you how to live. Something tells me that America wouldn't accept this for one minute as it is "their country" and that is why it makes me laugh when loads of Americans are saying we should stay when it would be a completely different story if they were in our shoes.

 

I am also trying to avoid the media because both sides are using heavy scare tactics to get people to vote on their side, the majority of what they are saying is a load of bollocks.

 

Anyway.. now I have got that out of my system, back to non politics related things :) they are generally more friendly and less confrontational subjects xD

Okay, for those people who are voting to leave the EU, or have yet to make their mind up, allow me to help you with reasons why we should stay.
1. Roughly only 12% or so of our laws come from the EU, and the UK has agreed to every single one of them. They have not been forced upon us, remember, we vote for MEPs who are our voice as a nation in the EU, much like our MPS are our voice in parliament.
2. We pay £190 million per week to the EU, not £350 million, which totals up to 0.6% of our entire GDP, which is nothing compared to how much goes into the NHS and the rest of the government spending.
3. Currently, the EU accounts for 40% of our exports as a nation. Imagine taking away 40% of your income and trying to get by that large a cut, whilst still living the way you do.
4. If we leave the EU and still wish to trade with them, it will cost us a similar amount to how much we have to pay to the EU already per year in tax just to gain access to the common market. We will also have to agree to whatever the EU wants us to if we want to continue trade. This will certainly include taking in migrants, likely more than we already take in.
5. For those who complain that immigrants are stealing UK jobs, bear in mind the people who are coming over and actually working are already trained, with a better education than the vast majority of those who are competing for the same jobs.
6. If we vote leave, we will be going against the advice of near enough every financial organisation that has taken any interest in the referendum, with every one of them stating we will have a decreased GDP and will almost certainly go into another recession.
7. If we vote leave, we will be siding with Putin, Farage and Trump for example. If we vote remain, we will be siding with Obama, Sturgeon and Branson to name a few.
8. The UK does not have an empire anymore, there’s no “Splendid isolationism” or anything like the 19th century and early 20th century anymore, we live in a globalised age where we cannot afford to be left alone to fend for ourselves. The empire now consists of a few small islands far far away who will not be able to make up for 500 million+ people in the EU.
9. the UK is part of europe as a continent, we are not stuck on the side of America, we are a small island 22 miles off the coast of France. Therefore, it would be foolish to not stay in the European Union, to help make the continent a better place than it is already.
10. If we leave, we cannot decide 5 years down the line that we don’t like how things have gone and we’ll vote to rejoin. This isn’t a general election, this is the biggest vote that you will likely ever have in your entire life, and if you don’t feel 100% certain in your decision, then vote to remain, because we can always have another referendum to leave, but we can’t have one to rejoin.

The problem with that reasoning is that even the Brexit camp wants to keep trade deals going with the European Union after leaving. The problem then becomes that to trade with the EU the UK will again need to allow free traffic of persons as one of the pillars of the internal market and will even need to follow all those EU rules for its products to be allowed onto the European market. The only pro-Brexit argument left at that point is no longer having to pay fees to the EU which gets negated by the economic consequences of leaving and no longer receiving any subsidies and the like. 

 

In addition to that the UK will lose its ability to direct where the EU is going(no longer a voting member), will have to not only negotiate a deal with the European Union but also almost every country the EU holds a treaty with as those no longer apply either. Just a few of the complications.

 

I also remain baffled how people keep saying that their country isn't in charge of making its own rules. The UK just like every other member has a member on the European Committee, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Parliament and even the European Court of Justice. Added to that the EU can only pass legislation on areas covered by its Treaties for which the Parliament of the United Kingdom already had to agree to in the first place or they would have never passed. So no, an accurate comparison for the Americans would be an organization in which the US is represented based on its population and economic size making rules for areas which congress already agreed to hand over to the organization.

 

So yeah, voting leave is the best way to make sure you can no longer make decisions.

As a non British member of Europe, I agree with the fact that if UK leaves the EU, it won't get back in it really easily.

Not just because we don't really like the British arrogance, buy mostly because it would be the same for basically any country.

That's why I'm afraid idiots in my country who want to leave Europe can actually have enough leverage to do so... it would be an irreversible catastrophy.

Fair enough, It doesn't change how I feel about it though. I will openly admit I am not the greatest when it comes to politics and I don't really follow it. The only reason I am following this is because of the fact I don't have a fucking choice haha. It is everywhere, you can't walk down the street without hearing people arguing about it and whichever way the vote ends up going, I can't wait for it to be over... 

 

Too many arguments, too many opinionated people who take any opportunity to throw their views in peoples faces and too many people who aren't willing to even listen to opposing views. There has been a lot of violence around where I live relating to this and I am just sick of it at this point.

Vote only if you have made an educated decision. If you haven't don't bother. Ignore the media and actually do some reading, it wont hurt.

I'm not British or European.  I'm from Asia.

 

However, I would like to see the UK leave EU and see if this will be the first step towards the collapse of the European Union.

Honestly, I don't really feel one way or another.  I frankly don't care whether the UK leaves or not.

Imo they should stay, if they don't, well nobody knows what would happen but as a person that doesn't give a f*ck it would probaly be hilarious to see what would happen :D

I don't care tbh, i don't live in the UK and i don't want to get even near to it, sadly i live in belgium so i'm actually very close to it. I hope UK civilians don't start massively fleeing to belgium...

The UK can't keep affording to import unskilled workers from eastern Europe, it puts too much strain on public services and in an era where we are heading towards unskilled work being usurped by machines it cannot go well. Increased housing will mean more removal of the green belt/agriculture. We who want out only want to be able to control who comes into our country. Not even Nigel Farage wants to end immigration just reduce it. And we cant stop 100,000 immigrants who come in using free movement of people across the EU coming into our country every year if we remain in the EU. 

The IN campaign has attempted to smear the Out campaign as hateful and anti immigrant. All because we care about the maintenance of our country. Creating an immigration system similar to that of Australia or Japan is what many have suggested

I'm of English descent, and I can apply for an English passport. This is a big thing for me as I am a year ahead of most people in the school system so I'm gonna take a gap year and use my English passport to hop around the EU without a visa.

That's only part of the arguments I've heard. The main one that actually makes sense is that the UK remaining in the EU represents a lost of sovereignty and self determination. The EU is set up in a way that can basically dictate laws to all members, without democratically elected representatives and even without any sort of majority being reached.

 

The EU currently does not uses this to affect much of other countries laws and such however in the case of immigration it gets more touchy given the current state of affair with the Muslim refugee* crisis. 

 

Personally, even though I heard very good counter arguments to all of this (Chief among them being representative democracy is all but a fucking fallacy anyway and how the EU is a basic deadlock that barely moves anywhere when it comes to policies and such) I think the underlying principles, that a country cannot even aspire in principle to democracy because of some trade agreement with other European nations, is just basically an indefensible position.

 

*I say "refugee" because while incidents of bigotry inspired violence by people who came in declaring themselves refugees have been almost universally NOT actual refugees and just opportunistic economical migrants coming from all over the world except Syria. Even some simple nationality fact checking could have prevented some of the incidents all over Germany, Sweden, etc. but that's deemed to politically incorrect to check if someone is just claiming to be coming from a war zone is actually not just a douchebag taking advantage of the open borders policy.

I have closed the poll for now, because releasing the results of an exit poll before voting has closed (at 10pm tonight) is illegal under UK law. You are still free to voice your opinions in this topic, but you can't post how many people expressed support for either side.

I will (if I remember) reopen the poll at 10pm. The difference between this poll and the official pre-election polls is interesting.
