Looks like this particular leak was spot on. We have received confirmation from multiple sources about the µOPGA 1331 pin socket from AMD (aka AM4). As you can quite plainly see, the motherboard was also spotted on Zauba. It says Sapphire on it, and since Sapphire manufacturers AMD's PCBs, it makes perfect sense. As well, it has Bristol Ridge quite plainly plastered on the name, indicating it is probably an AM4 motherboard. As well, it states in the second line "AM41331PGA." That AM4 there seems to me pretty obvious that this is an AM4 motherboard. As well, it says "1331PGA," which is perfectly in line with the rumors that the AM4 mobo has 1331 pins. Unfortunately there was no mention about a 140 watt TDP max, but that info probably wouldn't be important enough to be put on the description. However, this has convinced me the 140 watt TDP part is probably true since if bitsandchips got that much accurate chances are the rest is too.

AMD has been a devout supporter of Pin Grid Array socket types and it looks like the AM4 will be no different. OPGA stands for Organic Pin Grid Array (the ‘organic’ in the term stands for the plastic attached to the silicon die, out of which the pins protrude), and according to this report, the company is deploying a new standard called the µOPGA socket. The micro in the term indicates that AMD will be using pins with less diameter, which will presumable be weaker than OPGA based pins. Going up from 940 pins to 1331 is an increase of approximately 40% and it is implied that AMD will be decreasing the distance between the pins.

This means that while the µOPGA AM4 socket size will remain approximately the same, it will be much more fragile than previous OPGA based iterations. AMD hopes to use this particular socket for all its mainstream and enthusiast platforms – including APUs. AMD’s AM4 will combine the best points of AM1+, AM3+ and FM2 sockets. These will be deployed in everything from a budget AIO motherboard to the integrated PCH schematics of  Bristol Ridge. In fact, we have seen patents being filed of multiple new sockets from AMD including a switchable, LGA design:

If these rumors are true, this means that the AM4 socket will have 1331 pins and will support CPUs up to 140 watts. If it can support only up to 140 watts, hopefully that means we won't have another 9590 that draws as much power as a premium GPU. As well, with the larger amount of pins, it seems AMD will be using smaller pins on the CPU, which would make them more fragile.

More pins is probably a good thing, since it means Zen will be much more powerful.

 

Keep in mind to take this with a grain of salt. The original source, bitsandchips.it, didn't mention anything about where they got the information. This could be true, or it might not, so don't assume this is correct and, as I said, take it with a grain of salt.

I see something "wrong" here. I don't think AMD actually prefers PGA for its sockets ( considering lga is technically superior ). In fact , I talked to a former AMd engineer recently saying the main reason they use pga over lga is cost . This is why they use lga on server platforms , as they can afford to do so ( socket g34).

 

I was personally hoping for an lga design , but again , this is wccftech ...

I'm ready to drop all of my monies this year for PC upgrades on an AMD CPU+Mobo upgrade (and DDR4 ram) if it really is better than at lease haswell at the same core count...my dual 290Xs can wait an extra year before they get upgraded  (Time to bring out the dremel and dremel the drive cages...)

LGA isn't superior to Pga. They both have advantages and disadvantages

No, higher voltages. And socket thermals stopped being a problem a long time ago thanks to backplates.

this news is kinda pointless PGA/LGA 99% of people will be putting the CPU in and forgetting about it or not even open their case.. if this post had more solid information of the features etc of Chipsets to be available for AM4 id be happy

I really want AMD to compete with Intel's i7 line. But if it needs 60w more then no thank you.

Lets be honest, that TDP target is still far better than that certain $999 220W 5GHz FX 8350 (that consumes more power than my GTX 970 on its own).
