Gabe Newell's "Oprah moment" : Free Vive for all the devs present at the summit.

Rohith_Kumar_Sp

In Los Angeles earlier today Gabe Newell gave a crowd of VR developers what might be the best present this side of a Half-Life 3 announcement. During the Vision VR summit keynote he told those in attendance that they will all be getting a free HTC Vive Pre headset. A grinning Newell described it as "his Oprah moment", and—as you can see from the video the room went predictably nuts.

Unity’s press release, sent out after the keynote, doesn’t offer much more in the way of detail.

Quote

“Valve and Unity Technologies today announced a new collaboration to offer native support for SteamVR in the Unity Platform, giving developers new reach at no extra cost, Additionally, a new VR rendering plugin has been added to further enhance functionality.ntegration of the SteamVR code delivers native support for Valve's upcoming SteamVR platform to all of Unity’s developers. Beyond SteamVR support, Valve has developed an advanced SteamVR rendering plugin for Unity that allows for enhanced fidelity and performance, bringing consumers more realistic experiences"

that's actually pretty cool. there's not much thoughts i can give on this, anymore and i'd be REACT-ing to it.

And this is why we worship Gabe.  For his customer service may not be great, but his charity and dedication is.  That and CS:GO crates, man.

good move. After all that is a room full of game developers. Making sure they all have HTC Vives to play with increases software support from game devs. And Valve can afford it...

he also said "valve is releasing a rendering plugin for unity that will improve rendering fidelity and performance".

what is that? I know it's probably some code from source2 but for what?

I wish they'd release a similar plugin for Unreal Engine. I'm sure we will see more engines being supported down the line. It's a damn shame I didn't go. :D

Instead of calling it his oprah moment, he should have dressed up as her and reenacted that scene.

but idk how well a middle aged white man doing black face would have been received... >_>

Anyway, has anyone heard of a single game being developed for VR that actually intends to use the technology rather than just slap on VR support to a game you can technically play on a regular monitor?

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Eh. I mean, cool. But it's definitely a PR stunt to get more devs on board - Valve has millions of dollars that it can waste giving away free VR dev kits, but it cannot create a proper support system?

Nope, still doesn't redeem them. God, I hate the Lord GabeN crap almost as much as I hate #PCMR. It GabeN was so awesome, we'd have a proper dedicated support staff for Steam, with LiveChat and a toll free 1-800 number to call and speak to a real person.
