Apple demands widow get court order to access dead husband's password

A Victoria widow is outraged over Apple's demand that she obtain a court order to retrieve her dead husband's password so she can play games on an iPad.

"I thought it was ridiculous. I could get the pensions, I could get benefits, I could get all kinds of things from the federal government and the other government. But from Apple, I couldn't even get a silly password. It's nonsense," 72-year-old Peggy Bush told Go Public.

So, the husband died of cancer a few months ago, the widow just want to play with the iPad but then get asked for the Apple ID password, which she doesn't have. After providing a notarized copy of the death certificate and the will Apple told them they would need a court order ... SERIOUSLY?!?!?!!

After CBC made this public, Apple contacted the family to apologize and fix the problem, I think Apple really dropped the ball on this one! (whether or not it's the policy doesn't matter IMO, I think it's just wrong!)

It's policy, it has to be followed, and there is a reason why it exists. I don't like Apple but they were right on it.

If you complain about this you really fail to see how this is a good thing is most cases, people are fucked up and might not want their spouse to have access to certain devices because of reasons like bank accounts and the like. Some spouses are fucked up.

Don't forget this was a couple in their 70's and the husband was fighting cancer, I'm sure account passwords were not on the priority list! ;)

Would you want someone to know your LTT password, or your PcPartpicker password? Seems trivial but you wouldn't want it known.

It may not seem right and people like to hate on apple the most for some reason. but almost every other company in the same situation would do this.

Apple has a responsibility to protect it's customers, it did the right thing.

Edited from bad point.

Also, can't just be me who read "Apple to windows:"

the actual policy prohibits from sharing your password ... still, to me this whole thing is ridiculous, Apple could handle account of deceased other ways.

Also the policy on account of deceased is to straight up delete it, somehow the customer reps got confused and told them resetting the account wouldn't be a problem!

Policy is there to prevent "feelings" from making judgment calls.  It's not nice but Apple didn't do anything wrong here.  A court order is the right call.  For all Apple knew the deceased had asked that his iPad be destroyed in his last will and testament.

We're talking about people married to each other here, I don't understand the paranoia ... I have lastpass installed on all devices at home, I can access any of my wife's account and she can access mine, I really don't see a problem with it. It's not like I have anything to hide, also if you can't trust your spouce enough to share simple passwords, you should reconsider some things! Just saying.

You can't be the one to say anything.

It's an opinion for a reason.

As for the news, i don't see the issue in this. Yes, some relationships are completely fine. But there are others where you may have done things you would regret or your may of been straight up unhappy with the entire thing.

Funny that you say that, its pretty well known with my friends/family that if something were to happen to me I want the 4 HDD's in my server to be destroyed immediately.

To add to this there is completely different spectrum's of autism, one might have a small social ineptabiltity or they might find it difficult to communicate at all, and everyone just treats people with autism as stupid, Albert Einstein was thought to have autism.

READ YOUR FUCKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS

If the privacy policy states that it will take no less than a court order for a password, and that TnC was signed under the EULA...then the company is not at fault. Obviously empathy goes out to the widow, but what if it's a well organised scammer trying to hack your shit?

Edit: OP, your title is total clickbait and is toxic. I've read better titles from the goddamn Daily Mail and this is a tech forum. You even state at the end that Apple even reached out to apologise personally (of course only when their PR took a hit but that's another rant)

True true, But it seems like it was directed in such a way that OP was autistic for having his own opinion on the matter. Which.. .Is not how any of this works.

Yep, you're essentially signing away most of the rights you have when you click that button. At least for a few things. Which i personally do think is fine considering the consumer is the weakest and most unintelligent link in the chain.

I took the article title, if you don't like the title you can use the report button or complain to the multiple news outlets that used it.

I'm sorry, were you expecting apple to hand out customers' passwords to others? For all they know there could have been a good reason for the husband not to give it away, why should they do it? Asking for a court order is perfectly reasonable. They only apologised because they feared the media backlash, but frankly I think they had all the rights to act as they did.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
