Thunderbolt 3 as well, better iGPU which only gets used by system integrators that think the iGPU is sufficient enough. I don't know what else did I miss.

DMI 3.0 for more pcie lanes from the chipset, and nvme support. If you don't need these, I see no need to shell out the extra for a skylake setup. But if its a less than $25ish difference between the setups, then I say go for it.

for a gamer, would going from an i5 skylake to an i5 kabylake make a big difference? no

past kabylake is another socket so not much of a generation upgrade path.

10% is an overstatement, its much closer to 5%.

 

There is virtually nothing you get in exchange. You get more epensive, slightly faster ddr4, marginally lower temps, and a lower clockspeed.

Kaby Lake is really the only reason I can think of.

IMO Kaby Lake offers almost nothing better than Skylake based on preliminary features, but again I could be wrong.

NVMe gets to run at its actual speed, more pcie lanes, and your upgrade path will not be restricted by your cpu. Want SLI or CFX along with a Intel 750 or Samsung 950 Pro. Not on the Z97, but you can with the Z170. From your sig, it's an AMD build, so if your going with Intel get a 6700K.

Really?  Has Intel confirmed Cannonlake will be on a new socket?  Their pattern recently has been to stick with the same socket for two generations, and Kabylake is the same generation as Skylake (just as Devil's Canyon was still Haswell).

M.2 PCI x4 support the only real reason to upgrade performance gain here is worth more than the 10 CPU gain in my mind.

The performance gain over Haswell, in my opinion, doesn't really justify the cost difference. Sure, it's not THAT much but if you're already on Haswell and not having issues it isn't worth changing up your entire system over. Now if you are still rocking like Z77 or something and looking for an upgrade, then Skylake would be a reasonable chipset to go to. Or if money just doesn't really matter and you wanna stay with the curve of technology, by all means shell it out for Skylake. Personally, I'm on Haswell and while Skylake does have some features I'd like I'm going to ride it out for something a bit more substantial since Haswell is meeting my needs just fine for the moment.

 

if anything I'd go X99 over Skylake, since an X99 system would suite me for the next 2-5 yrs easily. But that's another thread for a different topic.

More guaranteed future cpu upgrades and that's about it. Thought the IPC improvement was only 5% though?

 

Very rarely would you ever upgrade from one Intel generation to the immediate next generation—even many Sandy Bridge owners still aren't bothering. Someone buying a Skylake i5 or i7 today would probably not get much value for their money by upgrading to another i5 or i7 on LGA-1151. A same-socket upgrade is advisable for someone with a Pentium, but not many others.

 

I don't know how the IPC improvement is quantified, but depending on the benchmark used, Skylake is between 0% and 20% faster than Haswell. Sometimes there's no difference, sometimes it's a surprising difference. Game benchmarks aren't an indication of very much, as most aren't sensitive enough to high-end CPUs for it to matter anyway.

The problem with Skylake is pricing, not that it isn't somewhat better. $280 for an i5-6600K and $420 for an i7-6700K are absurd prices. If those prices came down to match the MSRP more closely, Skylake vs. Haswell wouldn't even be a question anymore.
