Microsoft will let you keep your free 15GB of OneDrive storage, if you claim it

Source Link (PC World): http://www.pcworld.com/article/3014183/data-center-cloud/microsoft-will-let-you-keep-your-free-15gb-of-onedrive-storage-if-you-claim-it.html

Claim back your OneDrive storage link: https://preview.onedrive.com/bonus/

So recently Microsoft announced that they'd be slashing OneDrive storage for the general public and this caused outcry because users were left with a measly 5GB (starting next year). In a report from PC World there is a way to claim back your storage.. but there's a catch!

"Microsoft has grudgingly agreed to let current OneDrive users keep their 15GB of free cloud storage and 15GB of free Camera Roll “bonus” storage, rather than dropping you to 5GB as previously stated" - M Hachman

The article states that "there’s a small catch: by selecting the offer, you agree “to receive promotional emails from OneDrive,” ". But in order to combat this you can simply unsubscribe to the mailing services or use the Outlook 'Sweep' tool to permanently block the emails.

I think Microsoft is doing this in some part because some of the OneDrive users they had would consider transferring their files to the Google Drive therefore allowing Google to expand their cloud base even further.

What's wrong with one drive? It is the only cloud service I use. I don't store anything personal on it though.

Isn't there like a 100mb limit?

Neato for the people who use it.

For some reason I have 115GB of free storage on OneDrive, what's up with that?

Cheers,

Re: Use a NAS and your own hard drives. Leave cloud to people without the technical know-how.

That is a misleading statement, clouding has many advantages. Accessible anywhere, costs far less and may be free for that matter, and saves time for setting it up. Also combined folders. Security is a different issue, but no one can deny the practicality of cloud storage, doesn't matter if you're tech savvy or not.

I don't see how I mislead anybody: Yes those are indeed advantages for sure, couldn't agree more. That's why I said people without the technical know-how. If you do have the time and inclination to go for a DIY solution (In fairness to your point, not because you could do it means that you'd wanna go DIY) however the advantages far out weight the disadvantages though.

I meant the part when you said leave cloud to non tech people when I know many tech people that prefer it over a home server or something else. Of course you're not gonna buy TBs of cloud for home stuff, that would be money wasted, but cloud is not for only non tech people is all I wanna say. Will for a DIY solution is a different thing though.

Didn't they do the exact same thing about 4 (?) years ago with skydrive? I seem to remember them also reducing the storage from 25 to 7 GB or something like that.

Yep, Skydrive started as 25GB.

I think it went like this:

25GB -> 7GB -> 15GB -> 5GB

I wonder if I will get to keep my free 25GB I had grandfathered, or if they will reduce that to 15GB even though I applied to not get reduced to 5GB.

Re: Use a NAS and your own hard drives. Leave cloud to people without the technical know-how.

Well, you're sort of right, but not a lot of people use cloud storage to store personal stuff even when the majority does.

I'm sure quite a few people with the technical know-how to have a NAS, use cloud storage every now and then.

i wonder if it would be worthwhile to write a management program that you put all your cloud storage account info into and it creates a single folder that uses all of them and or splits it in half and creates a duplicate etc

obviously there would be a max induvidual file size but that would still be quite high

I removed that shit the second I saw it in W10

I love it, it's the main thing I use day to day since I have a Windows Phone and a PC.

Edit: Sweet, now I have like 30GB of storage and I don't know why or how.

Re: Use a NAS and your own hard drives. Leave cloud to people without the technical know-how.

As a student, why would you say this. Not everyone needs their storage only at home. I use Dropbox for syncing files between my laptop and desktop (school files) but the rest can be left to NAS. Just saying, there is a use for cloud storage that cannot be replaced by a NAS
