Microsoft to Kill the Control Panel in Favor of Settings App

Mr_Troll

Windows 10 users often get frazzled with the existence of two different and somewhat interlinked applications to customize system settings. There is the old and trusted Control Panel and then the newer, but more modern Settings app. Since Windows 8, Microsoft has been pushing its modern interface forward, which gets more refined with the release of Windows 10. In the process of doing so, Microsoft has to let go of some of the older elements that simply make the process complicated.

Apparently, Microsoft agrees with users and might just kiss a goodbye to the familiar Control Panel in the future Windows 10 builds. Windows 10 Settings app has become very capable of handling the settings and will be given more charge once the Control Panel is let go of.
Microsoft’s senior Program Manager of Windows Insider Program, Brandon LeBlanc, and head of WIP, Gabe Aul, have tweeted in response to a query that the company may soon chop the Control Panel in favor of the Settings app. Currently, when trying to customize the operating system, Windows 10 users have to face a conflicted experience of dealing with two different applications. Acknowledging this confusion, LeBlanc confirmed that the Settings app will eventually supersede the Control Panel.

@billybobjoe2211 @GabeAul Settings will eventually supersede Control Panel. Some stuff not moved over. But haven't had to use CP in months.
— Brandon LeBlanc (@brandonleblanc)

With the prospects of Control Panel being removed, there is obviously a very large segment of unhappy Windows users. But Gabe Aul insists that the feedback  received has largely asked to get all the Control Panel settings in the new app.

Gabe Aul, explaining how having two different apps means increased usage of system resources said, “Having two separate implementations means more code complexity and disk/mem usage. Getting to one is leaner.”

@ttmRX3 Different people have different opinions about this. We get lots of feedback asking to get all CPL settings into Settings app.
— Gabriel Aul (@GabeAul)

I belong to the group that finds it difficult to get along with newer features when older ones work (almost) perfectly. But, I suppose we would all get used to the Settings app once it’s perfected and supports everything that still resides inside the CP. After all, it would bring forward a uniform way of handling system settings throughout the different Windows products.

They better merge all of what's in Control Panel into the Settings app then, because it's missing a ton of power-user features.

They probably plan to do that. Settings in w8 had even less than control panel. W10 is getting closer.

This was a long time coming, it was obvious having the 2 is confusing, the problem is that control panel has so much stuff, combined with new stuff they want to introduce, is going to take them time, maybe the move will be done with the 2016 update because i doubt it will be ready by the update coming either next month or early December.

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

As long as GodMode still works, I don't really think anyone should be too worried, and as others have pointed out, the Settings app in W10 is fairly robust.

"Microsoft has to let go of some of the older elements that simply make the process complicated."

The fact the CP was complicated for normal users made it great damned!

It scared normal people away if they didn't know what they are doing. The new settings screen really shouts "click everywhere and fk up everything!".

That's a BAD thing MS, really BAD.

When ever I try to use the Settings app I end up having to use the control panel because I can't find what I am looking for.

Meh, they can do whatever they want as far as I'm concerned, as long as they don't screw up godmode.

i agree wholeheartedly with this.  i had this problem in win8, having multiple control panels and having different options in each one, then having some options not actually be in either one pissed me off to the point where i solely use godmode now(i actually have it show up when i rightclick on the desktop)

i honestly wouldnt mind them getting rid of control panel but they have to actually put everything in it, in the settings app, otherwise theres gonna be a lot of pissed off powerusers

The UI in settings is to plain to me and I fine it easier to navigate in control panel.

And yet...why can't I just type in "uninstall" in either the settings menu or in the start menu to get the Programs and Features thing, or an equivalent for the Settings app?

Do I have to type appwiz.cpl into Run all the time?

Good about time.

It makes support way easier, because Control Panel has it's 2 view modes which is a pain when you are over the phone or web and try and explain how to get to somewhere.

Works perfectly fine on my side. Maybe if you clean your start menu by removing all your software that include "Uninstall" item, it will help. I remove all this garbage, and all "Visit us! We beg you! Please click on me! Look look Forum! Support page that is useless! and and even made a link to About our company!" Because many of these companies are still stuck in 90's

You answered your own question, if it's called Programs and Settings then why would searching for Uninstall find it?
