Former ESPN host criticizes ESports, says that competitive gamers live with their parents, eat Hot Pockets, and love Star Wars

Okay, to be fair, the Hot Pockets and Star Wars part may be true. Almost everybody loves Star Wars. You don't have to be a geek to love it. As for Hot Pockets, well a lot of people like them. The comment that really irks me is that he thinks that competitive eSport gamers live with their parents. I don't think he realizes that most of these eSport gamers make more than their parents and live on their own.

 

Not only that, but all throughout the video he just laughs at eSports and in a comment to a fighting game says that "Yes, that will be on TV." What's wrong with that being on TV? I thought the match looked really cool. The gamers were playing well and giving us good good entertainment while the commenters were being passionate about commenting - something soccer/football commenters are all too familiar with. Basically Colin Cowherd is a hypocrite at large.

Le me being an idiot, not watching the video first.

 

EDIT: Watched the video. Hes taking the worst possible example of eSports ever. Sure, the commentators might be a little too over excited (or the mic being really bad), but (no offence to street fighting games) more competitive games such as CSGO, LoL and Dota require a much high level of thinking. For those who havent seen this, take a look at how excited the casters get.

I honestly don't see the need to care this much to be honest. As someone who played football in school and used to weight train, I still can't call sitting on your butt playing a video game a sport nor am I really fond of tacking "i" and "e" before words to make them sound tech trendy. It sounds absurd to me in the way of playing Cooking With Mama makes you an e-chef.

 

Here is the thing, though. Omitting the term "sport" and actually focusing on what's going on--it's a game of skill. These gamers that are ranked may not be an athlete in my eyes, but they are a damn good gamer that's for sure! That's the entire appeal and the reason these guys have a fan base. It's really not much different than watching that one kid kick ass on a Mortal Kombat arcade cabinet back in the day except now there are sponsorship deals + large sums of money going around. To me, that's pretty cool.

 

Announcers and coaches that cry about players of any genre usually do so because they know deep down they will never be in that spotlight and it eats at them.

So I finally watched the video, and I'm a little bit angry.

 

For me personally, it brings back memories of assholes that I had to deal with in public school that think themselves overlords of everyone else since they're on the varsity football team. This guy represents everything wrong with sports culture - it's not just him, there's way more people who are arguably just as bad or worse than this jackass.

 

To explore a bit more on what I mean:

 

• His mommy and daddy probably bought him expensive clothes and the best sports gear as he was growing up
• He made the 'varsity' team at his high school and thought himself as Mr. Big Shot
• Was probably a bully to people and still hasn't apologized to the poor bastards that had the luck to deal with him
• He's getting old and can't toss a ball anymore without his poor wittle joints giving him issues
• Probably needs to take 10 viagra to get it up now
• Someone never beat his ass as a kid and now he's got the same attitude that he did back in high school when he was banging his team's cheerleaders

 

People like that need to get down off of their high horse. Sports don't make you a better person than everyone else, like he seems to think.

 

That voice acting bit at the end of the video set me off. I didn't even finish listening to it because I already know what kind of bullshit to expect. But whatever. People like him are always going to exist, even in the e-Sports scene (it's only a matter of time if it hasn't already happened).
