Smoking Barrels - LTT's Unnofficial Gun Club!

Jack.EXE

OMG, I've had this gun for a month without mentioning it here.  It's called the Ruger Mk IV and it's chambered in .22lr.  Finally got out onto the range with my bucket o' bullets quality ammo and I was amazed at how well the gun ran it.  Mind you, there were a few failures to cycle and I think one dud primer, but by and large it was a completely tolerable experience.

So yeah, short version: I'M GONNA HAVE REGULAR RANGE DAYS AGAIN Y'ALL!

😞 Are your ranges closed for the pandemic/ammo shortage or is it just too cold in your area?

All pandemic related. Which is rubbish as 99% are out doors and as a rule you tend not to get too close to someone shooting. (Unless you're 'that' guy... who just can't help breathing down your neck and offering 'advice')

But national lockdown so no unnecessary travel.

That 22/45 lite is the exact model I've been eyeing up to replace my Walther P22. I used to shoot that P22 A LOT, like 500+ rounds a week because ammo was super cheap. Now it has 30-35k rounds through it and is just worn out.

I need to get a 22 suppressor coming and find one of those 22/45s to host it. Glad to hear you're having a good experience.

Yeah, I saw it when Colion Noir shilled it on his channel, decided that it was probably the semi auto .22lr I'd go with, then like 2 weeks later I went to a gun show and it was there. It was serendipity.

The picatinny rail is a bit...much....but I'm completely happy with the rest of the gun.  It's visually interesting, the bolt is extremely light, and -- most importantly -- it RUNS THEM ROUNDS.

I am considering getting a red dot for it, though.  The challenge will be to find one that's low profile enough to be roughly similar to my normal draw stroke.

I've been on the pistol dot boat for a long time now. My EDC G19 has had an RMR on it for 6+ years now. I'd probably look at something like a Holosun 407c for a 22/45, I think.

lol, just about anything will work.  22's don't exactly have a lot of kick.  I have a Vortex Viper on another gun which I may end up using (since it's 9mm it's basically a cabinet gun at this point), but the big question will be whether I can get a picatinny adapter that doesn't put the thing a full inch above the iron sights.

That's why I was talking about the holosun, there are versions of the 407 that have a pic mount built in to keep it reasonably low.

Yeah that's the one. The X2s, not as low as I'd probably like but I'm not sure you're going to find much lower with Picatinny.

There are direct mount options that replace the pic rail though.

*facepalm*  Didn't even check to see if the picatinny rail was removable.  Methinks that'll be the way we go.

Well, I'm glad I got that extra ammo a while back.  Found myself a bit short this paycheck, and ended up offloading a few boxes (at a slight markup) to compensate.  Bullets are almost better than gold right now.

What's nice is that my range has a "no gouging" ammo policy, so their ammo is still selling at about 20 cents per round for most typical calibers.  The other side of that is you're limited to one box per caliber per visit.  So I'm just buying one box of every caliber I have every visit.

Plus, as mentioned earlier, I now have a .22 handgun, so I can use that as my primary and switch to other calibers when I have enough rounds to make a full day at the range.

A friend of mine has a Taurus Judge he's willing to sell me. I've shot this gun before, and it's a good rig. I'm just not sure I want a revolver as my first gun. I was hoping for a full size 9mm or a .45 ACP, hopefully a 1911G. Any thoughts? Should I just keep waiting for some 1911's to come in stock, or should I jump on the revolver?

It depends on what they want for it. I've shot some rounds through a Judge, it's very difficult to get .45 Colt to be accurate in one in my experience. Being able to use .45 Colt and .410 shotshells is cool, but as for it being a first gun I'd probably wait for something else. Not sure what your budget is for a 1911, just my $0.02 is that they're expensive to get right because of the significant amount of machining required. What brands/models are you looking at?

My Current Setup:

AMD Ryzen 5900X

Kingston HyperX Fury 3200mhz 2x16GB

MSI B450 Gaming Plus

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

EVGA RTX 3060 Ti XC

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

I might be wrong on the Judge... It's a .44mag. All I know is, I shot it, it was comfortable, and I could shoot it one handed safely with right and left hands. 😄

The 1911 I'm really wishing for is a Magnum Research 1911G. I know they're out of stock. The 9mm that caught my eye was the Walther PPQ M2, but again, out of stock. Budget is not really a set number, I have disposable income due to the pandemic (I'm working slightly fewer hours, but I'm getting better pay per hour).

I think I'll just keep waiting. The Taurus sounds tempting, but .44 mag is just like everything else right now, really expensive (though, the Enfield I got to shoot a few years back, even pre-pandemic, was more expensive per round than .44 mag right now).

I was at a local store that sells farming supplies, firearms and supplies, feed, etc., and the only stock they have are 6.5 creedmoor rifles and rimfire rifles. 😧 They have some compact frame 9mm, and .357 revolvers, but that's pretty much it for local stock right now.

It sounds like a Taurus Tracker, but they change their lineup occasionally so it might be something else. I used to manage sales at an FFL but the market changes so frequently that I'm not up on some of the newer stuff.

44 Mag is an expensive caliber for sure, not really that practical because even .44 Special is a bit much for a personal defense caliber. A large frame .357 is great because .38 Special is usually very inexpensive and the +P variant is well suited for personal defense. Unless you hike around in bear country there's not a huge demand for .357 Mag for most; The option to fire .38 Special is nice though. 9mm is a very common caliber but obviously nothing is that easy to get right now, but a PPQ would be a good pistol. Glock is a really basic answer for a striker-fired 9mm, but they're popular for a reason. The S&W M&P series is a bit more ergonomic than the Glocks, another choice I'd look at.

The 1911G looks nice, I've never really come across that model but typically Magnum research does a good job. Springfield Loaded is probably around the same budget, also pretty good. I haven't put any rounds through them but the Ruger SR1911 seems to be favored as well.

I'm mostly interested in going out and shooting, either at the range or out in the very remote mountain areas. Self defense isn't really an issue here, and my job prohibits me from carrying (yeah, I agree with my employer, no arguments from me), so this would mostly be as a hobby, to increase skill, and to get out of the house to work on my skill. Every weekend is game for me. 😄 I'm usually way out in the mountains anyway on the weekends.

The 9mm that caught my eye was the Walther PPQ M2

I've got a Walther Q5 Match that I'm unopposed to disposing of if you're in the US and are willing to spend a bit more for a gun.  (The Q5 Match is basically a suped up PPQ -- it's got a ported slide and a trigger job, plus a few other things).  Its slide is also cut for a red dot optic, so you're already ready for that when the time comes.

Mild warning: it is a competition gun, which apparently makes some sacrifices to reliability for the sake of speed and accuracy, but the only problem I've had is an intermittently weird magazine which I can't be buggered to troubleshoot.

I'm seriously tempted. Does it use a standard magazine, IE, can it easily be replaced, or is it a little more difficult to source magazine replacements?

I can say that this exact moment is not great, my funds are depleted due to a recent trip, but in 3-5 weeks, I will have my bank account back up to my preferred levels.

They seem to, yes.  I don't have a PPQ in 9mm so I can't personally attest to it, but I have one in .40 and the mags are interchangeable from an exterior dimension perspective.

No pressure and no rush!  If you decide to buy, you know where to find me~

The AK is used by soldiers for a reason. It is reliable. Nothing comes close to the strength and reliability to the AK. the m16 proved that

M16 in Vietnam failed because they changed to ball ammunition, didn't chrome line the barrel (which led to corrosion in the Jungle environment). They also didn't issue cleaning kits and tauted it as "self-cleaning". This wasn't a fault of the design, but of the bureaucratic government that tried to cut corners.  Any firearm will perform poorly if you don't take care of it, and the Kalashnikov isn't exempt. People who say that the AK is indestructible obviously don't know much about them. 1698869640_Screenshot2021-03-09at08_06_08.thumb.png.13978f93fab63230c75b7ccf3ae33249.png

I think people should accept what the AK platform is: a cheap, cost effective assault rifle. That being said, it does the "cheap, cost effective" part very well. For its price it performs very good. However given the choice between the two I would always take an M16/M4 platform over an AK.
