It's funny you say that, on ebay right now there's a JR 3 for $50.

I was originally looking at the RCBS RCS for about $250CAD, then I noticed all the accessories I need lol. I'll definitely look around and see what I can find used, that could be a solid idea. Ontop of that are die's "cross platform"? Can I buy a set of Lee's die and put it in a RCBS?

I use a hand-me-down RCBS JR2 that my grandfather bought in the mid-'60s. It's a great press.

My Current Setup:

AMD Ryzen 5900X

Kingston HyperX Fury 3200mhz 2x16GB

MSI B450 Gaming Plus

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

EVGA RTX 3060 Ti XC

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

WD 5400RPM 2TB

EVGA G3 750W

Corsair Carbide 300R

I have RCBS, Lee and Lyman dies and they are universal thread size for your average calibers.   All three die brands work in either of my presses.  Shotgun and really big stuff like 50BMG require different threading and they may not be the same between brands but I don't own any and don't know.  My second press (red one) is the Lee Load-Master progressive press.  Really good for pistol ammo but not so much for rifle.

Thanks. It also looks like stock is pretty bare right now. I found a used RCBS RCS for $120+S&H, I just need all the accessories. I could also get the Lee Breech Lock Challenger kit for like $210 all in, which is really tempting.

I had a Yugo M24/47 in 8mm for a while that was really quite nice, though surplus was already starting to dry up in that caliber even then. My guess is that it will take a lot of Velveeta to stop one 8mm round, they carry a lot of energy.

.50 BMG literally stands for Browning Machine Gun. It's a .50 caliber machine gun round that was designed for anti aircraft and light AT roles. It was designed for the 1921 Browning Machine gun, which was later made into the M2HB, the .50 cal we all know and love. It is an American designed cartridge.

As for the Gewehr 98 (literally, Rifle 98), in the first world war, most of the ammunition that was used had a large powder load, which led to longer ranges and higher velcities. With the ammunition that was issued, velocity was about 2,881 ft/s, with an effective range of ~550 yds without an optic, or >870 yds with an optic. It was designed as an improvement to the previous bolt action German service rifle, the 1888, and was not a civilian rifle. The design is so robust, that many modern sporting bolt action rifles make use of its system.

After the war, commanders saw the need for smaller rifles which sacrificed range for lower weight and greater maneuverability, because trench warfare was effectively dead after the war. In WW2, the average engagement was much closer than the previous war, so range wasn't a big consideration. Men were fighting house to house, not taking potshots at each other from 1,000's of yards away across no man's land. In World War 2 we see the shift from "high power rifles" to smaller, automatic SMG's or squad level machine guns. The automatic weapon was arguably one of the most powerful in the war. At the time, German military doctrine basically centered around protecting the squad machine gun, as that was the most powerful tool at their disposal. This is why the M1 Garand was arguable the greatest innovation in standard issue weaponry at the time, as it was a semi-automatic rifle with 8 rounds, and a speedy reload to boot. This let the Americans get more rounds downrange in the same amount of time as their German counterparts, and thus, more chances to kill the enemy. At the end of the war, we even saw the first succesful "assault rifle", the Sturmgewehr 44, which was very effective on the eastern front, where there was a lot of urban combat. In the mid-50's, most of the nations of the world saw the benefits of an intermediate cartridge (Something larger than a pistol round, but smaller than a rifle round), so they started to make their own, like the AK-47. However, the Americans, who were a large part of the newly founded NATO, dug their heels in and basically strongarmed the rest of the first world into their battle rifle doctrine.Battle Rifles are largely similar to preceding rifles, (High power cartridge, etc), but they had the capability of automatic fire. Having such a powerful round on automatic fire makes it basically unusable. Compound this with the fact that the Americans tried to replace everything with this new "Battle rifle", and you get a recipe for disaster. This is the reason why the M14 gets such a bad rap. By any account, it's a good rifle, but it was outdated the instant it went into service, and the battle rifle was abandoned fairly quickly in favor of a newer, Ultra-modern assault rifle, the M16.

I'll be 100% honest, I used to manage sales at an FFL and I was always sketched-out when stuff like that came through the door. Pistol braces have been through so much ATF tomfoolery I'd be very hesitant to buy something with one. I don't know the specific work-around this solves for New Jersey residents though.

My Current Setup:

AMD Ryzen 5900X

Kingston HyperX Fury 3200mhz 2x16GB

MSI B450 Gaming Plus

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

EVGA RTX 3060 Ti XC

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

WD 5400RPM 2TB

EVGA G3 750W

Corsair Carbide 300R

most rifles, especially ar-15's are outright banned in new jersey, so these type of firearms workaround the specific regulations that ban them. the pistol brace back and forth is a good point though, my main worry being that i go through all this hassle, get the firearm, and they ban some aspect of it in the near future, and i'm stuck with a gun i can no longer own..

Why not move elsewhere?

I get it if you've got family and roots and what-not, but at the same time, why stay in a place where a hobby you enjoy is banned by the government?

More than good enough for me.

I'm in a similar boat. The weather where I live is rather hot in the summer, and it's having a negative effect on my health. So, I'm looking at moving north in the near future.

I'm looking for a concealed carry gun. I prefer 9mm, but I'm open to other calibers. My main limiting factor is size. I am not a large person, and I detest pistols that are difficult to operate with my small, beefy hands. Any suggestions folks?

This is a tough question to answer simply because there are SO many options.

How large of a gun are you willing to carry? Some people dont want to carry anything more than a micro gun, others are willing to carry a lot more. I daily a Glock 19 at 175lbs and 5'11"  with a large or XL glove size, but I recognize that most people dont want to carry a gun that large. Your best bet is going to be to go to a gun shop, preferably one that has a range and rental guns, and try a bunch of things out.

But if you're looking for a good place to start, consider the HK VP9SK, HK P30SK, Glock 48, Glock 45, Glock 26, Glock 19, Sig P365, Sig P938, Smith and Wesson M&P9c, CZ P10C and FN 509c. This is by no means an exhaustive list. The good news is that there are so many good options right now that it's really hard to get a bad one. I generally tell people to avoid Kel-Tec, High Point, and SCCY.
