British Transport Police are investigating after a woman had pictures of a stranger's penis sent to her phone by someone nearby her on a train.

The victim, 34-year-old Lorraine Crighton-Smith, said she felt "violated" by the "very unpleasant" experience, the BBC reports. Supt Gill Murray said the crime was a new one for her force but they were taking it seriously.

Crighton-Smith received the images via Apple's 'Airdrop' file-sharing system, which is specific to iOS and Mac devices and works via Bluetooth. It is possible to set it so that you cannot receive messages from strangers but Crighton-Smith had not done so.

She told the BBC: "I had Airdrop switched on because I had been using it previously to send photos to another iPhone user – and a picture appeared on the screen of a man's penis, which I was quite shocked by." She was on a train in South London.

She added: "So, I declined the image, instinctively, and another image appeared, at which [point] I realised someone nearby must be sending them, and that concerned me. I felt violated, it was a very unpleasant thing to have forced upon my screen.

iPhone users should change their AirDrop settings to receive from no one or just those people listed in the contacts list. And you get new word added to dictionary cyberflashing

I bet she lost some air looking at it

I guess AirDrop does throw your breath away

On a serious note, I don't turn Air-Drop at all

If I wanted to get some photos or videos from friends, I would rather just make them send it online privately than send it on the air in a public space

Wait, what? You're not even allowed to send pics of your genitals to random people anymore?

Wait... Do I understand this correctly. If you got AirDrop on, anyone can just send am image to you and it will automatically display? No confirmation needed?
That's a pretty big cockup by Apple. They should add a confirmation box. You know, like every other sane file transferring method every made. If it has a confirmation box then I hope the woman learned to never open strange files being sent to her devices. That should be common sense these days.

I have very limited knowledge of this feature.  But from news post images or at least stock photos, it appears that the confirmation box IS the photo.  In other words, you are presented with a prompt asking for your permission to receive the data, and for photos, there will be a thumbnail preview of said photo.

The British transport police are quite funny. I read another story a while back that they arrested some guy for using electricity from a train to charge his iPhone.

You'd think they'd have some more important things to attend to.

Edit: here's the article http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jul/13/man-arrested-charging-iphone-london-overground-train

While I fully understand the discomfort that this woman felt and I condemn the offender, I don't see how Apple is to blame.

I mean, if someone sets up an unencrypted or poorly encrypted mobile hotspot on his phone for whatever reason and just leaves it on, will we blame the device/OS maker?

When you turn on AirDrop it asks you if you want to be visible just for contacts or for everyone, why would you choose "everyone" in the first place, and then just leave it on?

It's careless for anyone to go into a heavily-crowded place while you are visible for everyone on Bluetooth, whether it's on an Android, Apple or Microft device. Receiving disturbing pictures is one thing, but there have been security exploits involving Bluetooth in the past, and these probably won't be the last.

So for the more traditional type of flashing, it's the victim's fault for leaving their eyes open?

don't think its right to compare it to traditional flashing. for all we know it wasn't even his dick. did anyone google the image? I wouldn't.. but for science, you know :P
