he doesn't live in BFE, he is 3 miles from the fiber node, learn to read the entirety of the article. you could buy the fiber cable and pay someone to run it for you for less than even the 42k most likely. and satellite is shit stop trying to act like it isn't. and if the people of the town vote to have the city pay for it I have no problem with the city paying for it.

 Ceresco, Nebraska  is smack in the middle of BFE. population under a 1000. I have a problem paying taxes for 1 person to obtain fiber.

Sounds like Satellite internet? Though satellite internet has high ping and low speeds.

Kind of, but Satellite uses Radio Frequencies, not laser beams. Also Satellite has to travel into space and back, which is the reason why it has such high pings.

 

A Fixed high gain direct beam radio wave would likely be even better than laser, since weather wouldn't affect it nearly as much. No refraction in fog, clouds, rain, etc.

 

How is it the cable companies fault this SOB live in BFE. The taxpayer, government, nor the cable company should not be held responsible for where this guy chose to live. There are other options like freaking satellite. I feel no sympathy for this man. He made his decision to live out on the middle of nowhere. 

Yeah... except he runs a farm... You can't exactly plop a farm down into downtown "Cityville" or whatever the closest town is. By it's very nature, he must be in rural areas.

 

You'd also be surprised at the amount of high tech and automation being adopted by farmers. Most farmers computerize their setup to at least a minor degree these days. Many are adopting much higher tech as well.

 

For $40 grand, that's not bad. Also, they said he gets a $6 grand credit every time another user signs up on the connection he paid for.

 

Considering the costs:

1. Cost of ~3 to 4.5 miles of Fibre

2. Cost of construction equipment - even via rental or lease

3. Cost of construction material - Weather proof Conduit, fibre notes/transceivers, etc

4. Cost of labour - somebody has to dig those holes

 

That's not bad for $40,000.

I do agree - this is something that the FCC's Net Neutrality laws should hopefully address over time.

Well you have to consider that Fibre comes from somewhere. The City has to have a feed coming in from some other city or from the regional backbone. Just because there's a node out in the middle of nowhere, because maybe that's a junction point for the ISP, doesn't mean it's still not in the middle of nowhere. It's a rural farm after all. There probably aren't more than 5 houses within a mile of his farm.

 

Pole Clutter can be a real bad problem - The US and Canada (among other countries) have strict control over the poles - in part - to prevent pole clutter. Have you seen some of the pictures from South American countries that don't regulate pole clutter? We don't want it turning into this:

I feel like the $42K was reasonable, all things considered. But I still firmly believe that he has the right to complain even still. Especially since his final speed was 25/25, instead of the (arguably) more useful 50/10 he was originally promised.

 

At least he'll get a $6K credit for someone getting service on the line he paid for, but even still, there are only so many houses in rural America in a 3.5 mile run.

From what I read in a different article yesterday (can't find it now), the node was not a consumer node, but simply a long haul junction.  So consumer interface equipment needs to be added and everything.

The way I read it, he was complaining about the run around he got trying to get the 42k price, but understood and accepted it, and felt it was worth the cost.

You guys...you pay way too much for your internet. 1000Mbps down/200 up for 10 euros per month here in Romania (urban areas) and up to 100 up down in most rural areas...

You people.....

I wonder how many of you have actually lived on a farm or are farmers. I am and have visited many farms. These days so much is being computerized, a few milking robots, a manure bot, a back end monitoring ALL the cattle for health and fertility. Unless the farmer has a server on site to manage all that stuff usually they need a connection to another server for some management (also for access on the go, in fields and such) so a good internet access is nice. Not even considering the stuff yuo have to submit to the government for a lot of stuff, declarations for this documents for that. Considering all of this is necessary for a modern farm you need good internet. And in my opinion this should be supplied for a reasonable price to the farmer. Or otherwise the consumers should start to pay more then bottom prices and then maybe the farmers would have some money to actually buy a line for 300K. But if the consumer doesn't want to pay directly then I feel that the government/ISP should build better infrastructure partially with tax money.

I agree that ISPs should have to pay for the connection infrastructure.  The telecoms were given enough money to connect everyone in the country, twice.  They simply kept the money and didn't connect anyone.  So the government really needs to mandate that the ISPs will connect anyone and everyone, or else .... something.  The problem is that money rules the world and we mere peasants aren't able to hold the companies accountable because we don't have the money.
