You Want Fiber? Okay Give Us 382,500$ Says ISP To A Farmer In Nebraska

When the operator of a family farm in Nebraska requested fiber service from the local DSL Internet and phone service company, he found out that he’d have to pay an incredible $383,500 to subsidize the ISP’s construction. That’s the price estimate Windstream Communications provided to the Norman R. Schneider Family Trust Farm in Ceresco, Nebraska, after CTO Nelson Schneider contacted the company about getting fiber service to replace his DSL.

 

So you may wonder, what the distance, to the nearest fiber node is?

 

Windstream told Schneider that he would have to pay to run fiber about 4.5 miles from its facilities to his property, “but it's actually 3.5 miles from town, which is the same distance it is to Northeast Nebraska's nearest fiber node,” he said. (NNTC told Schneider in an e-mail that he was "about 3 miles from our nearest fiber connection.") Strangely, Schneider said there is what appears to be a Windstream fiber line about a quarter-mile from his property A map of Windstream’s fiber network seems to confirm its location.

 

 

But fear not!

 

Fortunately, it looks like Schneider will get fiber service for a fraction of that price from a second network provider called Northeast Nebraska Telephone Company (NNTC). Even though the Schneider farm is completely outside NNTC’s service area, even for copper, NNTC told him it would build the fiber line for a more reasonable $41,915.88. While nearly $42,000 is still a lot, Schneider noted that “it is a one-time investment that will enhance my quality of life and property value significantly.”

 

Ended up getting NNTC instead

 

Fed up, Schneider contacted NNTC in June. He had learned about NNTC running fiber to farms in its service area, which wasn’t that far from his own. After exchanging a few e-mails with company representatives, an NNTC executive visited Schneider because “he wanted to drive the proposed fiber route and stopped by to discuss it while he was in the area.” Northeast agreed to let Schneider pay for the construction in three annual payments of about $14,000 each, and it will provide 50Mbps download speeds and 15Mbps uploads for $100 a month, he said.

After this article published, Schneider learned that the package will instead be $140 a month for 25Mbps both downstream and upstream. The $41,915.88 construction cost remains the same.) Northeast also agreed to a $6,000 credit for any other customer “that signs up using the line I'm paying to install.” The necessary paperwork is being finished up this month.

 

25/25 for 140$ That's the price for 500/500 fiber in Denmark.

Sounds like he got robbed, that speed, at that cost, unacceptable. And he is the one that paid for the line in the first place!

I get nearly the same speeds at either 10€ a month or 20€ a month. (cant remember) That is still way cheaper, and I din't åay for the installation of that connection FFS.

That is a lot of infrastructure for one consumer connection.  While the price is high, the $40k seems reasonable if that is what it costs.

Before I knew much about PCs like back in 2006 my dad was going to set up our internet by using these high power lasers to beam the information. The ISP was at Cray SuperComputers and we would of had like 3 gigabit internet speeds. I still think you can do it but it has gotten way more exspenisve and the who thing wouldn't work the best in thick fog but rain was no problem as the laser was high enough power. I forgot what it is all called but colleges use it. They are like boxes on an antenna and they receive the laser or internet and some shoot it out.

That was the company he singed up with. As you can read in the article the other company wanted a lot more.

 

Well, yah, that is how business works.  Company A says price A, company B says price B.  You choose based on which deal you feel is better.  Just because A is 10x B, doesn't mean anything.  That is like saying that you went looking at cars, and the Ferrari was 200k, while the Honda was only 20k.  Yah the Ferrari is 10x the price, but that doesn't mean it is a total scam (nor does it make it better just for costing more).  I am sure he could have found a company that would do the work for a million dollars, doesn't mean anything.  He got multiple quotes, and some were much higher than others, that is standard contracting work.

Before I knew much about PCs like back in 2006 my dad was going to set up our internet by using these high power lasers to beam the information. The ISP was at Cray SuperComputers and we would of had like 3 gigabit internet speeds. I still think you can do it but it has gotten way more exspenisve and the who thing wouldn't work the best in thick fog but rain was no problem as the laser was high enough power. I forgot what it is all called but colleges use it. They are like boxes on an antenna and they receive the laser or internet and some shoot it out.

 

Sounds like Satellite internet? Though satellite internet has high ping and low speeds.

How is it the cable companies fault this SOB live in BFE. The taxpayer, government, nor the cable company should not be held responsible for where this guy chose to live. There are other options like freaking satellite. I feel no sympathy for this man. He made his decision to live out on the middle of nowhere. 

Test ideas by experiment and observation; build on those ideas that pass the test, reject the ones that fail; follow the evidence wherever it leads and question everything.

he doesn't live in BFE, he is 3 miles from the fiber node, learn to read the entirety of the article. you could buy the fiber cable and pay someone to run it for you for less than even the 42k most likely. and satellite is shit stop trying to act like it isn't. and if the people of the town vote to have the city pay for it I have no problem with the city paying for it.
