European court rules Skype’s name is too similar to UK based Sky broadcaster

AlexGoesHigh

Is viaçom gonna sue viagra too?

And is British Telecoms (BT) gonna sue the British Broadcasting Company? We must go deeper.

Chances are they own a company, or chain of companies, that eventually owns viagra lol

Damn, how is this even possible? I am serious, this is a whole new form of retarded. Different markets, different connotations, different logos ...  It's MS story in a nutshell. Everything that can be done against MS will be done against MS.

Nah, it'll be the other way around. Also, I can't wait for the BBC to sue British Columbia.

Hehe, I wonder how long Microsoft will be able to use one in their products until the EU court rules that it's too similar to OnePlus.

"Sky originally filed its complaint in 2005, six years before Microsoft completed its acquisition of Skype for $8.5 billion."

10 years long fight. FU Sky.

This is almost as stupid as when the Candy crush people tried to trademark 'Candy' and 'Saga', or how Bethesda was going after 'Scrolls'.
Can we finally have a ruling you can't trademark or claim ownership to a word that was already in the dictionary before you even existed?

Don't think this should go through. I'm going to make a company/product named "A" and now you cannot have "A" in any of your product's names because a substring of the name contains mine!! Profit?!?

What about no Skype in Europe?

Before the Microsoft buyout, Skype was based in Luxembourg. afaik they're still in Luxembourg.

I can't wait until Sky tries to sue the sky for violating their trademark.

I really fail to see the similarity. They contain three letters that are the same, the logos are very different and even after asking a lawyer they fail to see a case. European courts really are mad, even from the viewpoint of British courts.

More and more I am starting to see a pattern of the EU courts becoming a boys club whos sole agenda is to prevent US companies from competing with European ones. The list of borderline calls is starting to grow.

1. you can't bundle an internet browser with your product.

2. you can't choose what connector you put on your phone

3. You cannot control the apps that run on your OS.

4. you are not allowed to keep your world recognized branding because it has three letters the same another company half the world hasn't heard of.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Ugh REALLY, this makes me SO glad I left Sky behind. The company just sounds more and more stupid as the year goes by, their customer service is dire at best as well.

They used to be really good, but now I wouldn't touch them with a cattle prod. Please go home Sky, you're drunk.

I really hope Microsofts appeal wins, Sky seriously needs to step back and realise who they are. Microsoft is HUGE and Sky is puny compared to them.
