Yeah, I could.  Its like when you eat a super hot chille and you dont want to tell anyone.  So you just man up and suck it up.

Yep. Those where the days.

Glorious C2K.

It's so bad atm, it's just funny:

I got locked out of my account because someone put in my username and then keyboard mashed for my password.

And the new "My school" log in and Windows 7 is just painfully slow to use, like, they've basically ignored the start menu, in favor of a new web interface for launching programs or "apps." Again, I'll try to get a screenshot tomorrow

A friend of mine uses mac PRO for linux because he likes the "buildquality"

Dunno about the pro, but at one point (only a couple years ago) Mr Linus Torvalds himself was using a Macbook for the reason of build quality and hardware reliability. He'd obviously changed the OS (duh) but had still chosen that laptop over other laptops around the same price. I for one believe in the quality of materials used on Macbooks (and I guess the hardware's alright), though I'm not in a position to buy one and would prefer to spend my £1000 on a 970, new CPU, mobo and case or put it towards a Nord Stage 2 or Korg Kronos or something.

School Firewalls.... Me and my friend were doing research for a school project.... We went to a suggested website... School Filter blocked for: Porn.

Ours isn't much better. There's standard blocking categories and then there's ones manually blocked. Those don't come up with a reason (because the reason is the category) which is hella annoying. Wikipedia was blocked for a couple months and we're not sure if it was accidental or because of students doing the ol' homework copypasta.

Anyway, a couple of years ago I was doing some music homework (research on one of the set works - Grace by Jeff Buckley) and typed him into Google. Tried to go to the wiki page and it blocked me for 'pornography'. Dumbest thing ever. The page itself has nothing to do with porn.

SERC has its own system. Which is just the normal Windows 8 login except that all the programs are on the machines while all your files are on a server. C2K was a pain in the ass.

That's how it is spelled 'normally'

I think those people who order those PC for school understand shit about PC's. The PC's in my school don't have an Graphics Card, and we have projectors so they HAVE to use some sort of Spliter... which makes the projector run at the Monitors resultion which is 1280x1240... fucking grose

Before I left grade school, all the PCs had Core 2 Duos with 2GB RAM. And ran Windows XP. Unpatched. There was also the odd Windows 2000 PC, but most of them were retired by 2012.

It's not even like C2K is *that* far off, just have the programs intstalled locally, actually use the start menu, tone down the proxy a notch (Like google.com is blocked for "adult content" as well, wtf?), remove the crapware that launches at startup, and just allow more freedom with regards to browser options, not everyone likes using IE, or a super-locked down version of Chrome

TL;DR The idea is good, but the execution is bloody awful

They contact their usual supplier and order the cheapest bundle for the amount of computers they need. In our school it's bad enough having either single or low-end dual core Pentiums with max 2GB RAM (they take out excess as 'spares'), but the fact that in most of the computer rooms they bought new monitors when they got new systems and did the dumbest thing. They chucked out the old 17" 1280x1024 panels (which ran at 1024x768 because Windows XP is stupid) and replaced them with new 17" 1280x1024 panels. Yup. Bearing in mind that the music and photography departments have 19" 1400x900 and 22" 1680x1050 monitors and that there's still computer rooms which have 15" (or 13" - not sure) 1024x768 panels. Maybe even 800x600.

The only good thing they did was replace the old CRTs in the DT department. Though the new panels are average TN they're better than the old CRTs and don't take up as much space.

But I still can't get over them chucking out old 17" 1280x1024 panels that could have been used in the rooms with the 15" ones. In fact, where's my 1080p display? Music and photography would benefit from that, along with DT. Actually, widescreen of any type would be nice to have in every room. Even the teachers' computers are 5:4 and the projectors run at that res from a splitter.

The schools "computer expert" started bitching and told us he had perfectly good computers (slot pentium III's) and then the principal forced him to upgrade to dell pieces of crap. I really think I would not have felt the diiference of speed I told him barely keeping my breath. Then i came back to my computer, exploding with laughter :):D

I'd still argue that everyone should have an anti-virus, just in case something does happen eg. LTT had a JS injection last week that was linking to a website that hosts malware

We had Windows XP P4s until ~2007 when they were upgraded to Windows 7 Core 2 Duos. Last year they phased those out with Windows 7 i5s. All low profile HPs. (I have one of the Core 2 Duo ones sitting next to me. I need to get a GPU for it.)

One room has workstations. i7s and Quadros. Not bad actually.
