Experiences with non-techies

Almost all computer terms are not meant to be pronounced like a single word, they are just said by their individual letters.  Some examples are

  1. Asus ROG, just say the letters R. O. G. not "rogue"
  2. eDRAM is E. D. RAM, not EeeeDurrraammm
  3. CPU is C. P. U. not CeeePeeewww
  4. PSU is P. S. U. not PisssSuuuu
  5. DDR RAM is D. D. R. RAM, not Durrramm
  6. MSI is M.S.I. not MmmmSaaiiii
  7. RGB is R.G.B not RaaaGeeeBbuuu

Just a side note  one of my friends pronounces PSU as  PiSs-U

Staff: "Can you see where I'm pointing?"

Me: "not yet, the program runs a bit slow some times" (which is true, sometimes there can be a few second delay depending on the staff's location)

Staff: "I mean where my finger is"

Apparently remote desktop works by seeing everything through their eyes

lol, never encountered this, but I have plenty of users sending me screenshots of screen damages (dead pixels, cracked screen, etc..).

everyone can pronounce it as they like IMO.

There are proper pronunciations and improper pronunciations. It's not a matter of opinion, but I do get what you are saying and I do agree that it's not a huge deal if somethings pronounced wrong. If it's an acronym initailism however, then is should almost always be said as the letters, not as a word. Let's take "SKU", for example, I used to say S-K-U because it's an acronym. I used to say S-K-U because I thought it was an initialism. Learned today that it is an acronym, and acronyms are said as words.

If it can be pronounced as a word, it is an acronym. Otherwise it is an initialism. Acronyms also often use the second letter of a word to make it able to be pronounced.

LASER ( Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation ) is an acronym.

FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) is an initialism.

SKU is thus an acronym and is spoken as "skew".

Wow... Still on the Geebpisses? I'm already one level up at the Meebpisses!

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Do this:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

True, I meant to say that they're initialism(s?). CPU, GPU, PSU, are initialisms, while RAM is an acronym.

In fact, if you can pronounce it as a single word, most of the time that is the correct pronounciation.

I had a client that while i was troubleshooting his network attached printer told me that when he tried to unplug the ethernet cable sparks went off from the port. I was like WTF? I couldn't figure out what is wrong, so when he tried to do something trying to recreate situation he screamed that it happened again... There was no sparks of course - it was blinking orange ethernet port LED reflecting from his hand that he had no idea was there :D
