AMD Discusses Its Roadmap From 2015 All The Way To 2020 In Japan

MetroP

The discussion revolved around AMD’s graphics IP and all the products that involve it. Including discrete Radeon graphics cards and Radeon powered Accelerated Processing Units or APUs for short. As well as AMD’s upcoming ARM ( K12 ) and it’s sister x86 CPU core ( Zen ) . In addition to AMD’s ambidextrous strategy to develop and introduce both x86 and ARM powered SOCs to the market in a pin for pin compatible platform code named SkyBridge.

006l.jpg

By 2017 AMD plans to introduce what it described as a High Performance Computing APU or HPC for short. This APU will carry a sizable TDP between 200 and 300 watts. This sort of APU, AMD expects, will excel in HPC applications. Similarly powerful APUs were not attempted up to this point because they were simply not viable due to the amount of memory bandwidth required to keep such a powerful APU fed.

Yeah, maybe an APU will be a viable gaming option on the cheap then.

I just want AMD to go back to making kickass CPU's, is that too much to ask???

If I see bulldozer anywhere in this announcement I swear to god I will sodomize someone with a sanding wheel on a power drill

Figuratively

Time for a new architecture AMD I aint got all life!

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I wonder who bought their APU solution? (apart from AM1)

seriously I havent met anyone or at least heard anyone that they have APU in their build

most office I knew using DELL or Lenovo built pc with i3/i5 in it.

Does anyone actually want APU's that suck at CPU tasks. If AMD could make a CPU that was actually a good CPU that would be a different story.

People asking for a new CPU architecture from AMD. Have you somehow missed this ?

The new information that has been revealed this time around is that the K12 and x86 sister core [ referring to the new Zen core ] will support “many threads”. It was speculated and rumored before that AMD’s upcoming x86 and ARM CPU cores will support simultaneous multi-threading instead of clustered multi-threading which is what AMD’s current Bulldozer family (Piledriver, Steamroller and Excavator) of processors support.

So it appears that AMD’s upcoming K12 ARM core will be quite large for it support “many threads” instead of just supporting one additional thread as is the case with Intel’s high performance CPUs.

AMD's working on two entirely new beast mode cores.

Well it looks like their many-thread strategy will be up against Knight's Landing, and their HPC APUs will be going toe to toe with the E5/E7 Xeons which will have iGPU this time around. And K12 will additionally have a fight against the Xeon D/Avoton chips in the micro server arena

Maybe, just maybe, we can get a 370 on an APU.

I am conducting some polls regarding your opinion of large technology companies. I would appreciate your response.

If I have to see another graphic/graph/spreadsheet or rumor about AMD I swear man. I don't want to hype up too much h in case they don't live up to the hype. But really, can we get something from you already AMD!? D;

Really want them to do well, to keep the rest of the market on their toes.

I really do hope they do something big with 'Zen' and then current GPU. Also HSA and new DirectX improvements. It will be great to see.

I wouldn't assume a large die like that would be cheap, its primary target it the server space based on this and it sounds like something along the lines of the PS4 chip with Zen CPUs instead of Jaguars

The cost of the platform definitely isn't gooding to be cheap. But I wouldn't say the processor stupid expensive. But really depends on if they use tsmc, global foundries or even Samsung.

I'm liking that APU's will finally become competitive enough with discrete graphics because of stacked HBM, while being much more efficient in power draw and resource management than having separate cpu and gpu. memory bandwidth has always been a strong argument against APU's being able to catch up with discrete graphic cards, and its nice to see AMD finally bringing the unified cpu/gpu architecture that much closer to high end gaming, and circumvent the need for a better pci-e bus revision (one can hope). The other aspect of this is gaming consoles, which would heavily benefit from HBM memory. I even suspect that the Nintendo NX will be using HBM with a modified AMD APU (we already know AMD is working with an undisclosed company on a future gaming console).

Interesting times indeed.
