We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

You don't really go somewhere to become a techy... if you're drawn to tinkering and technology, you're there. There are different levels of it, though.

I was given a scrapyard worthy pentium 3 tower with 512mb of ram, windows 2000 and an equally old crt monitor and I was told that's all I was going to get for the time being. I learned out of necessity. And I actually liked it. I then got a pentium 4. And eventually I could afford to build a new computer.

I also got into overclocking and tweaking at the age of 12 so I learned quite a bit about CPUs and Motherboards from there. I also like to spend a lot of time reading articles on anandtech and such from the last 10 or so years. I know quite a lot about old hardware despite probably only being 7-10 years old at the time it was relevant.

god, my childhood.

 

learn by need.

hack to learn.

hack because you need to know the password because your parents are dicks.

learn part building because things fail and you need to replace them

Look at a piece of technology and get a question how how it does something or why or how powerful then just google away.

I got a laptop with Windows and started becoming a nerd. Dunno exactly how that worked. I think using OSX Leopard for many years on an old PPC Mac gave me purpose.

The real knowledge comes from the experience of doing things.

 

When you come across problems, you learn how to solve them (by googling or trying to solve yourself), and then you know the answer when someone else is having the same problem.

Start fiddling with your own computer, take stuff apart, put it back together.

Understand where things go.

 

Get a basic understanding of how things work, and that will increase the speed of which you will learn.

Example: computer screen is showing blank screen when booting up PC.

Through basic knowledge of the computer, you know for a screen to not work, it will generally affect one or more of the following:

Monitor, GPU, display cable, motherboard, software.

Then you go through the steps to test each component separately to make sure it works properly.

When you find the problem, you will learn why there was a problem, and what you can check next time it happens.

 

Also, read about the latest products that come out, SSDs, mice, keyboards, monitors, CPUs, GPUs, mobos etc.

Look at stuff you want to buy, read the specs and see values from the specs that you don't understand. Google those things and it will help you get a picture how that device performs.

I agree with a lot of people on here… You need to watch, read & listen to everything that you can get access too.

 

I teach in the technical field (not computers), and what I tell my students is “you just have to start and try. You won’t ever learn how to do it until you attempt to do it for yourself.” – or something like that- because just you learn just as much -if not more-  from your mistakes as getting it right the first time. If that’s buying an incorrect component, installing something wrongly, or whatever else you do that doesn’t work out the best. So, don’t get to overwhelmed and just have fun with it.
