Should I buy this "star citizen"?

Syntaxvgm

I have a 970, so a game as pretty as this needs to be in my collection. But right now, the time I have to game is limited. As it currently is, how much fun is playing star citizen?

How much do proper control affect this experience? Would I be good to go with a  controller for now?

I mean god damn, this and Elite Dangerous. It's been years since I've played good new flying games.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Nope. I've heard of it, and I know it's about space, but that's all.

You go spend a few hours researching it and come back, can't call yourself a PC gamer unless you know about it.

If you can, I would. What they've been showing off is something that I think PC gaming desperately needs: a kick in the ass.

I wouldn't say that; knowing what Star Citizen is has nothing to do with being a PC gamer. :P

So you don't currently own anything from sc? Depends on your wallet and your motives. You aren't "technicly" purchasing ships, the game, etc. you are donating. In return they say thanks for donating, have a ship. So if you are interested but don't want to donate for a ship then you should wait till the full release. Other wise, get your self a ship, get arena commander. And start dogfighting.

As for controls I have found that people say keyboard and mouse are ideal but joysticks, hotas, and controllers are getting better support, slowly.

Only 'buy' Star Citizen if you have the intention of doing so purely to support the game's development. It will not be released in a complete state for another couple of years. The alpha of the final game is expected to be Q4 2015 / Q1 2016.

Ok ok, let's not get into the (Your not PCMR if you don't _______) There's no need for that...

To OP. Star Citizen looks awesome. We don't know if Chris Roberts (boss... CEO... lead dev... design chief... <IDK>...) can pull it off. But man, if he can!!!

No dont bother its a buggy piece of crap, you'll waste your time dealing with random shit. I know a guy who plays it and it routinely takes him 20 mins+ before he can actually play the game because of online issues.

Must be his issues. I can jump in right now and play fine with no issues. It is very barebones at the moment but that is why it's considered Alpha.

Possibly. But its still not worth someones time if their time to play games is limited. It looks like it will be awesome in a year or two though,

Right now, Star Citizen is in Pre Alpha development, that's why it has issues. The single player game supposedly comes out later this year, and the MMO part of it comes out after that.

I'd say get it, but that's just because it looks amazing good fun, and you'd be helping to support a game being made purely by the developer, for the whole purpose of pushing gaming to what it can be, instead of just to make money. Any Dev that says "our game will not be coming to console because consoles cannot handle the game" deserves money in my opinion.

Then again, I hate console gaming so someones gonna flame me for that.

I'd get Star Citizen right now if I could.

It's not even an Alpha, it's still in development, the point of getting in now is to help them make the game better with bug reports, testing, and financial assistance.

If you want to know more about SC before buying into it, I suggest you read the FAQ's here in this subforum by @b45op and @DtrollMC

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/142641-unofficial-uoltt-faq/

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/290993-what-is-star-citizen/

They contain information about the game itself and our player organization, the UOLTT. Then, you can decide for yourself if you want to support the game and devs by buying it, wait until it comes out and then buy it, or just discard it and move on ;)

New to Star Citizen? Look no further!

Alpha means it's in the first stage of development. A lot of people seem confused, pre-alpha would imply that there is no actual game and the whole thing is just a concept.

There are only modules at this point, you can walk around you hanger, fight in your ship, or fight fps fights, on limited maps.

May be out of date on my info, but I'd call that pre-alpha. They're test modules from what I understand

No, pre-alpha means pre-development. Alpha and beta stages are stages of development, not stages of the final game. The game is in the first stage of development, alpha.

Commercial game development projects may be required to meet milestones set by publisher. Milestones mark major events during game development and are used to track game's progress.[149] Such milestones may be, for example, first playable,[150][151] alpha,[152][153] or beta[153] game versions. Project milestones depend on the developer schedules.[149]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_development

Definition can vary by developers or publishers, Alpha can mean a final game in testing phase or it can mean a game with basic functionality. CIG claim they're in Alpha.

So far, the Persistent Universe IS just a concept. Technically, Pre-Alpha is the correct term when referring to the game Star Citizen. Not so if you are referring to Arena Commander specifically.

The Persistent Universe is in production at the moment. Development began a while ago, you must not be up to date.

So... a guy asks about if the game is interesting, one-third of the posters don't even bloody know what section they are posting in, another third talk about the game and know little enough to be even relevant, and the last third are arguing over semantics that is clearly not even clear cut as the definition may be simple, but the situation changes on how you view it.

Point 1, game is what you would call a near alpha state as they are testing modules and parts to verify that the individual section works. Thus, game is IN development. Alpha will begin of actual full game once the modules are complete, and as such then the PU alpha begins. So, pre-alpha if you are speaking of 'prior to full alpha state', but not correct if you are saying it is not in development.

Point 2, if you are not interested in the subject or have nothing relevant to say, then why in all bloody hells are you posting? Please check subforum, then check topic at hand. If you don't know about it, then read up about it. If you still feel the need to post, be more conscientious. Here I thought we were a step above anon randoms in the comments section in social media sites...

Point 3 (returning to on-topic discussion):

Xbox 360 controller is supported (and works well from what I hear)

Kb/m obviously supported, best overall accuracy and well customizable.

Hotas/joystick is supported but you can not change sensitivity as of yet. This is promised to be changed soon, but controls are very sensitive; which may not be to some people's preference.

Ending Comment:

The premise of the game is amazing, what they have done with the game so far is actually better than what a number of companies have done with full games. Does this mean it is finished and perfect, no. But then again what is? If you want a complete game to take your time, or want a game you can move up in, wait till full release, or later beta. If you don't want to spend anything, or spend a little for some somewhat decent games, there is a magical place called steam. If you are interested in the game, keep in mind that it is by donation and pledge for now, so if you want to support it, that is why people put money in it. So this is all up to you if you wish to back it or hold off.

Still new, but learning
