New Build! Build 16251

What's New?

  • Ability to link your Android phone to Windows 10. iPhone coming soon. This gives you the ability to send a URL from your phone to your desktop.
    Quote

To get started, after installing today’s new build on your PC, go to Settings > Phone and link your phone. Having you link your phone ensures that your sessions from your phone are continued only on to the PC that you’ve chosen. After adding your phone to be linked, you will receive an SMS from us directing you to install a test application called “Microsoft Apps” for Android that completes the link between your phone and PC and enables one of our first cross device browsing scenarios.

    New Phones settings page

After you’ve linked your phone, just go to your phone and start browsing the web. When you are at a website you want to view on your PC, simply invoke the native share experience on your phone and share the website to the “Continue on PC” option. You might need to click the “…” or more to add this test app to your share menu.  Once invoked, it will first ask you to sign in with your Microsoft Account.  It is important you use the same account you are using on your PC.  Next it will ask you if you want to “Continue now” or “Continue later”. If you choose “Continue now”, the website will magically open on the linked PC.  If you choose to “Continue later”, the website will show up under Action Center for you to get to later when you’re ready. Try it out and let us to know of any issues you run into!

Sharing to PC Step 1. Sharing to PC Step 2. Sharing to PC Step 3.

  • And now Cortana shows web results directly in itself, without opening the web browser:
    4c10aafe61fc9c32bd5138543ddde518-300x247

  • New Cortana commands:

    • “Hey Cortana, restart PC.”
    • “Hey Cortana, turn off PC.”
    • “Hey Cortana, sign out.”
    • “Hey Cortana, lock PC.”

Verbal confirmation will follow. You'll need to say: "Yes" to confirm,

As Windows 10 Fall Creator Update release is coming closer, Microsoft is starting to focus on polishing instead of working on new features.

Here is what has been improved:

Quote

Input Improvements

  • We’ve adjusted the size of the one-handed touch keyboard to be a little bigger, as well as added a thicker border as padding around it so you’re less likely to accidentally tap outside the keyboard and dismiss it.
  • We’ve updated the new XAML touch keyboard to now support a full keyboard layout option for English (United States), English (Australia), French (France), Italian (Italy), German (Germany) and Spanish (Spain) languages. Appreciate everyone who shared feedback on the subject! To access this keyboard layout, tap the button in the top left of the touch keyboard.
  • As you launch and dismiss the touch keyboard, you’ll now notice an animation of it sliding in and out.
  • We’ve softened the sound of typing on the touch keyboard – thanks for your feedback!
  • We fixed an issue where the touch keyboard might get into a state where swiping across it would move the keyboard contents around.
  • We’ve updated the Japanese one-handed touch keyboard specific key labels to be written using the Yu-gothic UI font.
  • We fixed an issue where the Japanese touch keyboard might sometimes take multiple taps of the delete key to delete a selected character or phrase in certain text fields.
  • We fixed an issue where the touch keyboard’s options in Settings to disable suggestions and disable “add a space after I choose a text suggestion” didn’t work.
  • We’ve adjusted two-finger precision touchpad scrolling so it should feel a bit smoother now – please try it out in today’s build.
  • We fixed an issue where the Microsoft Pinyin IME candidate window wasn’t visible when Microsoft Edge was in full screen mode (F11).
  • We fixed an issue where Japanese IME status notification didn’t appear when the IME was turned on with Kana input method.
  • In addition to scrolling, pen can now also select and drag objects when barrel button (a button on the side of the pen) is pressed. This functionality was already available in Win32 apps and Microsoft Edge as of 16215, and today we’re expanding it to include all UWP apps as well. Please try it out in your favorite apps and let us know how the experience is working for you.
  • We fixed an issue where it wasn’t possible to use the pen to move a Win32 app window up and down by dragging the title bar.
  • We fixed an issue where the coordinates were slightly off when using the pen to point erase in the last few flights.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

  • Microsoft Edge will no longer re-scale sites when in Tablet Mode with narrow viewport width (such as in a snapped view or portrait orientation). This provides a more natural experience on modern responsive sites in tablet mode.
  • We fixed an issue from recent builds where the Copy Link option displayed in Microsoft Edge when you right-click a hyperlink wasn’t working.
  • We fixed numerous reliability issues in Microsoft Edge that will improve user experience with crashes and hangs within the app.
  • We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge with PDF failing to open on refresh.
  • We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge with PDF fitting to page for certain books.
  • We fixed an issue with Pinned Sites from Microsoft Edge where it wasn’t showing the right favicon on the taskbar.

PC Gaming Improvements

  • Some users may see Game Mode enabled in the Game Bar by default for some of their games.

General

  • We fixed an issue from the last flight where if you had display scaling set higher than 100%, you might encounter a bug where the hit targeting was offset when interacting with various parts of the shell. This was particularly noticeable in Action Center, where it might appear that nothing in Action Center could be clicked or tapped, but could also have been experienced in other UI around the system.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in IMAP email accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, and Aol potentially not syncing in the Mail app in the last two builds.
  • We fixed the issue causing Windows Defender Security Center to be unable to configure and list items for Controlled folder access, Threat History and Exclusions due to a crash in the UI.
  • Narrator Scan Mode is now on by default for just the Edge app. You can continue to toggle Scan Mode on and off with Caps Lock + Space. We made this change based on your feedback. Please keep providing feedback with Caps Lock + EE.
  • We fixed a bug that resulting in poor text rendering on some machines when Magnifier was running with bitmap smoothing enabled. Please try it in today’s build and let us know if it seems better now.
  • We fixed an issue where the Windows Defender Security Center icon appeared unexpectedly stretched out when using a wide sized tile pinned to Start.
  • We fixed an issue where certain inbox apps might unexpectedly show a progress bar on their Start tiles for a short time after upgrading.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in explorer.exe using an unexpectedly high amount of CPU in recent flights when certain apps such as Microsoft Edge were running.
  • We fixed an issue where Groove Music’s mini view player would reset its position to default if you used File Explorer to open and start playing a new mp3 in Groove Music.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in some apps, such as Tweetium, not rendering the UI correctly and becoming difficult to use.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the notification prompting you to enter tablet mode not working properly when you access in recent flights.
  • We’ve heard your feedback and have adjusted the My People emoji above the Taskbar to now be referred to simply as “My People notifications”. This terminology can be found in Taskbar Settings.
  • We fixed an issue where the mouse response might appear erratic on certain devices when playing games with Raw Input disabled. If you are a gamer and had noticed this issue, we’d appreciate you trying this in today’s build and letting us know if it’s improved.
  • We fixed an issue where the insertion point mouse cursor appeared white for some Insiders, making it invisible against the white background of many text boxes.
  • Some Insiders may have noticed the Windows Error Dialog had a new string in recent flights (“opening a portal to another dimension”). It was a placeholder while we decided what string we wanted to go with, and based on your feedback we’ve updated it to explain that the problem is being reported to Microsoft.
  • We fixed the issue with PC Games using the Origin overlay where the use of overlay may cause game movement to lock up.
  • TruePlay, formerly called Game Monitor, is a placeholder within the Windows UI. Your games cannot be affected at this time. We’ll have more to share soon.

Known issues:

Quote
  • If you installed Builds 16226-16237 and upgrade to this build, Storage Spaces will not work correctly. While Build 16241 contained a fix for the general reported issue with Storage Spaces in that build range, we discovered that the fix only applies for computers not already in the bad state, and need to do some extra work to return those already impacted to the good state. Special thanks to the Insiders that have helped us investigate this!
  • Trying to use the dictation hotkey (WIN + H) in UWP apps won’t work – you’ll see the UI come up and immediately dismiss. If you’d still like to use dictation, the microphone in the touch keyboard will work. You can right-click the Taskbar for an option to show the touch keyboard button if it’s not already visible.
  • We’re investigating your reports that after upgrading to the latest Insider Preview builds, some network settings are lost and revert to default settings. Static IP address configuration is reverted to DHCP. Networks which were marked as private are reverted to public. After the upgrade you will need to manually readjust your network settings back to your preferred settings.
  • Start, Action Center and notification toasts may at times have a background that is 100% transparent. A fix will be available in later flight – for now, if you encounter this issue, try ending ShellExperienceHost.exe via Task Manager or rebooting to resolve the issue.
  • Connecting to a VPN using a solution downloaded from the Windows Store may result in a system crash.
  • The battery flyout might show unexpected text for the % charged (specifically “%1!s!%2!s!% until fully charged”).

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16257 for PC

Quote

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are excited to release Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16257 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring and also in Skip Ahead! We are also releasing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 15237 to Insiders in the Fast ring.

We won’t have a new Windows Server Insider Preview build for Windows Insiders this week.

What’s New in Build 16257 For PC

Eye Control (beta)

Yesterday, we announced Eye Control, which makes Windows 10 more accessible by empowering people with disabilities to operate an on-screen mouse, keyboard, and text-to-speech experience using only their eyes. The experience requires a compatible eye tracker, like the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C, which unlocks access to the Windows operating system to be able to do the tasks one could previously accomplish with a physical mouse and keyboard. We are starting by supporting the EN-US keyboard layout, and we are looking to expand to more keyboard layouts in the future. We are excited to release this experience as a beta and would love your feedback!

Setting up Eye Control:

  • Own or purchase a Tobii Eye Tracker 4C (Coming next will be support for Tobii Dynavox PCEye Mini, PCEyePlus, EyeMobile Plus, and I-series.)
  • Download and update to Tobii’s Core eye tracking hot fix release 2.10.11.6458 and run calibration with your own profile
  • Check for Windows Updates; the new Tobii Eye Tracker HIDClass Driver should be found on Windows Update and installed automatically.
  • Make sure your Tobii eye tracker is connected to your PC and turn on Eye Control by going to Settings > Ease of Access > Other Options > Eye control.

How to enable Eye Control in the Settings app.

Eye Control launchpad – When you turn on Eye Control, the launchpad will appear on the screen. This allows you to access the mouse, keyboard, text-to-speech, and to reposition the UI to the opposite side of the screen.

The Eye Control Launch Pad.

Eye Control interaction model – To interact with the UI for Eye Control, simply look at the UI with your eyes until the button activates. A visual affordance will appear around the UI that you are looking at.

Eye Control mouse – To control the mouse, select the mouse from the launchpad, position your eyes on the screen where you want the cursor to be placed, fine tune the position, and select what action you want to take (left click, double left click, right click, or cancel).

Using Eye Control to control your mouse.

Eye Control keyboard – To use the keyboard, select the keyboard from the launchpad, and dwell at the characters you want to type. You can type numbers and symbols on the &123 page and function keys on the Fn page. We currently support the EN-US keyboard layout.

Using Eye Control to type on the on-screen keyboard.

Eye Control shape-writing – Type faster with your eyes by shape-writing on the Eye Control keyboard. To use shape writing, turn it on from the keyboard settings (found on the Fn page). Once it is on, you can form words by dwelling at the first and last character of the word, and simply glancing at letters in between.  A hint of the word predicted will appear on the last key of the word. If the prediction was incorrect, you can simply select an alternative prediction provided.

Using Eye Control to do shape writing on the on-screen keyboard.

Eye Control text-to-speech – Communicate with your family and friends in person by using text-to-speech. To use text-to-speech, select text-to-speech from the launchpad. From here, you can use the keyboard to type sentences and have it spoken aloud. At the top are phrases that are spoken aloud immediately and can be edited to say different words. This uses the default text-to-speech voices, which can be changed in Settings > Time & Language > Speech > Text-to-speech.

Using Text-to-Speech with Eye Control.

Eye Control settings – Access settings from the Fn keyboard page to adjust the dwell times, turn on/off shape-writing, and turn on/off the gaze cursor used to test hardware calibration.

The Eye Control settings panel.

Known Issues:

  • Eye tracking does not work well in direct sunlight. The device may require new calibration when moving to a location with different lighting conditions.
  • The launchpad partially blocks the Tobii UI during device calibration. To work around this, turn off Eye Control during calibration and turn it back on when you are done. You can also use touch or mouse to reposition the UI during calibration.
  • Sometimes shape-writing can get stuck on. You can fix this by dwelling at the shape-writing icon to turn it on and off again
  • Sometimes the reposition UI icon in the launchpad takes focus after exiting text-to-speech

Hardware support:

Currently, Eye Control works with select Tobii hardware. We are open to working with additional hardware vendors to provide customers a broader set of hardware options to enable this experience.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

Microsoft Edge introduces Acrylic which is part of our new Fluent Design System.

  • We’re giving Microsoft Edge a refreshed and more modern look in the browser frame, inspired by the Fluent Design System. The use of Acrylic material provides depth and transparency to the tab bar and other controls, and we’ve improved button animations to feel more responsive and delightful.
  • Based on your feedback we’ve adjusted the design of the address bar so now even if the address bar isn’t in focus to start with when you click and drag the text it will remain under the cursor. Previously the text would shift as the “http://” appeared – this change will make it easier to quickly edit parts of the URL.
  • We fixed an issue where right-clicking on an image in Microsoft Edge and selecting copy then later pasting the clipboard content would result in the image URL being pasted rather than the image itself.
  • We fixed an issue where if a tab had been opened while Microsoft Edge was in full screen mode, using Ctrl + W to close that tab while still in full screen mode would close the content but leave the tab in the frame.
  • We fixed an issue where if you had two unrelated tabs in Microsoft Edge and opened a link from the first in a new tab, the new tab would appear to the right of the second tab rather than the first.

Console Improvements

During the Creators Update development we updated the Windows Console to support full 24-bit RGB color and today the Windows Console’s default colors are getting their first overhaul in more than 20 years! Yay!

The default color values have been changed to improve legibility of darker colors on modern screens, and to give the Console a more modern look & feel.

We updated the Windows Console to support full 24-bit RGB color.

To preserve your preferences, this new color scheme will only be visible in Properties if you clean install this build. For more details about Windows Console, head to the Command Line Blog.

Input Improvements

  • We’ve improved the performance of launching the touch keyboard after tapping the touch keyboard button in the taskbar.
  • We fixed an issue where using WIN+H to dictate into a UWP app’s text field wasn’t working.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the Japanese IME prediction candidates position being shifted and overlapping with typed text if you set the page zoom level to something other than “100%” in Microsoft Edge.
  • We’ve adjusted the design of the Japanese curve-flick touch keyboard to display numbers and English letter keys in a smaller font that’s more consistent with the size of the Japanese character keys.

Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) Improvements

  • We have added new status strings to the WDAG splash dialog to provide more information about the startup stages for WDAG. These new strings will be displayed to users when WDAG is starting up and when it’s being resumed from a paused state.
  • We have also made significant improvements to container launch times by optimizing background preparation of the WDAG container.
  • We fixed a number of issues that were impacting networking inside the WDAG container as well as a poor user experience when connecting to the WDAG container.
  • Fixed an issue where the WDAG launch resulted in Error Codes 0x02 / 0x00 or 0x02 / 0c.
  • Fixed an issue where only part of the WDAG window was being displayed after launch.
  • Added a registry key to allow users to optimize WDAG launch times during active browsing by not suspending the WDAG container when the WDAG window is closed.  You can set the registry key to optimize for performance here: Computer\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\HVSI\, Value name: SuspendOnContainerClosed, REG_DWORD, Value data: 1.  Note: Setting this key will result in the container not pausing and the container will not release committed memory.

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

  • We fixed an issue where the battery flyout might have shown unexpected text for the % charged (specifically “%1!s!%2!s!% until fully charged”).
  • We’ve fixed an issue resulting in certain network setting being lost on upgrade and reverting to default. Specifically, static IP address configuration was reverted to DHCP, and networks marked private were reverted to public.
  • If you had installed Builds 16226-16237 and had found Storage Spaces to not be working, today’s build expands upon the fix in 16241 to remediate those PCs that had upgraded from the impacted build range and were still in a bad state. Thanks again to the Insiders that have helped us investigate this!
  • We fixed an issue where if you switched to a new tab and back in Microsoft Edge, Narrator would start reading from the top of the page again, rather than remember where you had been on the page.
  • We fixed an issue where right-clicking on a folder in File Explorer and saying Scan with Windows Defender wouldn’t work if the folder name contained #.
  • We fixed a rare issue where the Windows Search Service might get stuck on initialization after upgrade, resulting in File Explorer showing “Working on it…” infinitely when accessing certain folders.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in certain games such as Wargaming’s World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes appearing to hang/freeze shortly after launch when played on x86 PCs in recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue where some Insiders were not being offered builds higher than Build 16241.
  • We fixed an issue where connecting to a VPN using a solution downloaded from the Windows Store may result in a system crash.

Known issues for PC

  • Start, Action Center and notification toasts may at times have a background that is 100% transparent. A fix will be available in later flight – for now, if you encounter this issue, try ending ShellExperienceHost.exe via Task Manager or rebooting to resolve the issue.
  • We’re investigating reports where Action Center shows it has some number of notifications but when you click to open Action Center, there are no notifications shown.
  • We’re investigating reports that suggested apps are visible in Start despite the related setting being off. For now, if you encounter this please try toggling Settings > Personalization > Start > “Occasionally show suggestions in Start”.
  • When installing or updating a Windows Store app, you may see error 80070057. As a workaround, you can get the latest app by uninstalling the older version of the app from your device and reinstall latest version from Store.

If you have not switch branched to "skip ahead" to get Redstone 4, the doors are now closed. Microsoft says that many people switched to it, and they need Insiders on current insider fast ring branch.

While no information is given, I personally expect it that it will merge at some point for insiders.

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16273 for PC

By Dona Sarkar / Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16273 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring and Skip Ahead.

Flighting Update for PC

We have some updates for Windows Insiders on how we’ll be releasing new builds going forward for the next couple of months.

As explained when we introduced Skip Ahead, we have “forked” the release into its own branch we call “RS3_RELEASE”. Many Windows Insiders will recall we did the same thing for the Windows 10 Creators Update when we started flighting builds from the “RS2_RELEASE” branch. Insiders in the Fast ring have been getting new builds from this branch over the last few weeks now. We are now at the point of the development cycle for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update where our focus is now on stabilization for release to the world. This means that we intend to release these builds to Insiders more quickly to both the Fast and Slow rings as these builds we include mostly bug fixes.

For Insiders who joined Skip Ahead, we will continue to release builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch but they won’t be released at the same pace as builds from RS3_RELEASE. Since we are just now beginning development for RS4, Insiders will soon notice a jump in build numbers just like we did early in RS3. Also because we are just beginning development for RS4, Insiders shouldn’t expect to see a lot of big changes or new features just yet. Our engineering teams remain focused on getting the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ready for release. This remains our priority.

Skip Ahead is now full so if you try to join, it will let you know that in the Settings app. But don’t worry! Once the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is released, Skip Ahead goes away and all Insiders in the Fast ring will get moved back to the RS_PRERELEASE branch for RS4.

What’s New in Build 16273 For PC

Try out emoji notifications with My People

Help test My People and emoji notifications on the desktop by adding the new Windows Insider Emoji Bot to your taskbar in My People and ask it to send you some emoji. We added a Quest in the Feedback Hub so you can rate the experience.

Introducing the Bahnschrift font

Our new first OpenType Variable Font Bahnschrift is now included in builds. This new font industry standard enables us to pack an entire typeface family into a single file with infinite variability. No longer are you constrained to simple weights like Light, Regular, and Bold. Now you can have an infinite range of font styles, with smooth interpolation from Light to Bold and beyond. Better still: because a single, efficient variable font can replace several static fonts, variable fonts save a lot of space. To learn more about variable font technology, see the articles in WiredDesignmodo, or Alphabettes.

The new Bahnschrift font

Bahnschrift is our own rendition of the DIN font standard. Apart from being the standard road sign font in Germany and much of Europe, DIN is frequently used by graphic designers for its high legibility and clean, hard-working design style. Bahnschrift supports a smooth spectrum of weights from Light to Bold, as you can see in the above image. In this image, each letter is a slightly different weight than its neighbors. All these weights are “duplexed” – meaning they do not change in width when you change weight. You can switch from Light to Bold without changing the layout at all.

Windows Shell Improvements

  • We fixed an issue resulting in Start, Action Center and notification toasts at times having a background that was 100% transparent.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights where the Action Center icon might show it had some number of notifications but when you opened Action Center no notifications were displayed.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights where suggested apps were visible in Start despite the related setting being off. For now, if you encounter this please try toggling Settings > Personalization > Start > “Occasionally show suggestions in Start”.
  • We fixed a recent issue where removed placeholder tiles in Start might come back after explorer.exe restarted.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in certain live tiles not updating in the last flight, including the Weather and Money apps. If you were impacted by this you may need to unpin and repin the live tile for it to work again.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights where typing immediately after opening up the Start menu would sometimes not switch to Cortana, even though if you tapped the Cortana icon Cortana was up and running.
  • We fixed an issue where notification groups in the Action Center couldn’t be dismissed by swiping across the app name. We also fixed a recent issue where notifications in the Action Center couldn’t be dismissed with pen.
  • We’ve fixed some timing issues so that swiping to dismiss a notification toast should feel more reliable now.
  • You can now middle click to dismiss a notification toast!
  • We fixed an issue resulting in no “Safe to Remove Hardware” notification after following the device removal process from the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” tray icon
  • We fixed an issue where it wasn’t possible to tab to the quick action area of Action Center if there were no notifications visible.
  • We fixed an issue where the network flyout might become unresponsive when Bluetooth was enabled.
  • We fixed a deadlock resulting in Start, the network flyout, and other Shell UI elements becoming unresponsive after tethering certain Android phones.
  • We fixed an issue that could potentially result in Start not launching after installing a 3rd party IME.
  • We fixed an issue where if you started dragging a tile on Start just as the flip animation started in the tile, it could result in the tile becoming invisible under your finger until you released it.
  • We fixed an issue where right clicking on an image file in File Explorer would show “Next desktop background” instead of “Set as desktop background” in recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue where desktop icons sometimes couldn’t be drag-and-dropped to certain places on the desktop, even though the desired spot appeared to align to the same grid as the other icons already in place.
  • We fixed an issue where desktop icons could become unexpectedly spaced out when logging in after the primary monitor’s DPI had changed.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

  • When using Find on Page, pressing F3 will now go to the next result. Shift+F3 will go to the previous result.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in certain websites not rendering correctly when used in inPrivate mode.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Microsoft Edge sometimes getting into a state where after right-clicking a website the context menu would immediately dismiss.
  • We fixed an issue which resulted in the video element defaulting to a black background if the size didn’t match the aspect ratio of the video.
  • We fixed an issue where right-clicking and selecting “copy link” would sometimes not work as expected.
  • We fixed an issue where copying bitmap images from Microsoft Edge wouldn’t work.
  • We fixed an issue where pasting Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text into Microsoft Edge in recent builds would result in question marks instead of the expected characters.
  • We fixed an issue where misspelled words in input fields were sometimes not updated when a correction is selected from the spell checker.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights where a session cookie might unexpectedly get overwritten, potentially resulting in login issues on certain websites after a page refresh.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in status updates to Facebook.com sometimes being erased during input.
  • We fixed an issue causing certain controls such as calendar widgets to break on some sites.
  • We fixed an issue for websites with images added using source-set where the height would sometimes unexpectedly be computed to 30px.
  • We fixed an issue where clicking Run on a download in Microsoft Edge that required elevation would result in input no longer being received in that window until switching focus away and back to it.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the tab bar sometimes drawing incorrectly after dragging the window between two monitors with different DPIs.
  • We fixed an issue from recent builds where you couldn’t use the letter ‘x’ when renaming a favorite.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in a crash when using drag and drop to rearrange favorites.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to type @ using the Hungarian or Czech keyboard in recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue where PDFs containing xref streams might have rendered as blank pages in the last few flights in Microsoft Edge.
  • Scrollbars in Microsoft Edge will now be the correct size on secondary monitors where the DPI differs from the primary monitor.

Input Improvements

  • We fixed an issue that resulted in words sometimes being input twice when using the handwriting panel in certain websites using Microsoft Edge.
  • We fixed an issue where you could end up with multiple underlined words when using shapewriting in a text field then switching focus away from and back to that text field and shapewriting some more.
  • We fixed an issue in Win32 apps where a space wasn’t automatically inserted if you used shapewriting to write a word then tapped a letter to start a new word on the touch keyboard.
  • We fixed an issue with the Hebrew touch keyboard where tapping certain keys didn’t produce the expected character. Please take a moment with this build to try out the touch keyboard in your language and let us know how it feels for you.
  • We fixed an issue where the Full touch keyboard layout was unexpectedly not available at certain screen resolutions.
  • We fixed an issue when using the Emoji Panel with Narrator where using tab to switch sections would resulting in Narrator repeating the old section name for each emoji instead of the current one.
  • Changes to pen behavior in recent Insider builds have been met with positive feedback, however also caused drawing in certain apps to work incorrectly. In this Insider build we’ve made a change to address this feedback pertaining to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, and Clip Studio Paint.

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

  • We fixed the issue causing the Virus and Threat Protection pillar in Windows Defender Security Center to show as “unknown” after upgrading to the last build.

  • We fixed an issue some Insiders were experiencing where Windows Update’s Delivery Optimization settings would reset back to default upon leaving the page.
  • If you previously accessed Device Encryption on the About Settings page, you’ll find we’ve moved it to its own page under Settings > Update & Security > Device Encryption.
  • We fixed an issue where the lock screen might unexpectedly just show your theme color instead of the selected custom or Spotlight image after upgrading in recent builds.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in certain apps crashing when attempting to use the app to capture a picture using the webcam.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Node.js (v6.9.4) not being able to run scripts stored in OneDrive or access any paths in OneDrive.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpectedly large number of OneDrive app-requested download notifications.
  • We fixed an issue where using Alt-P to open the preview pane in File Explorer for PDFs associated with Acrobat would say “This file can’t be previewed.” in recent builds instead of displaying their first page.We fixed an issue where right-clicking on the volume icon in the systray might sometimes unexpectedly take 3-5 seconds for the context menu to appear.
  • We fixed an issue where changing the selected option in the dropdown under Multiple Displays in Display Settings didn’t do anything.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in adding a phone or taking a new profile picture in Settings not working if Settings was run elevated.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in DVD Player failing with error 0xC00D36B4 on machines with DX10 graphics cards.
  • We fixed an issue for PowerShell in Japanese where the “た。” character of the sentence “検証 23% が 完了しました。” would display repeatedly when running SFC /scannow.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in certain games like Cut the Rope, Buggy Racing and others from unexpectedly extending past the bottom of the screen when put in full screen mode in recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue with the custom color picker, for example seem in Color Settings, where panning with touch across the colors would move the area rather than smoothly update the selected color.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in acrylic material’s noise layer blinking in a second after the rest of the UI if the UI was animating in on top of a video.
  • We’ve improved the rendering performance when using touch to pan UWP app windows that have applied acrylic material.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in XAML controls sometimes unexpectedly becoming pure white in recent builds when transparency was enabled.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the OneNote app sometimes having rendering issues in recent flights (for example, missing text blocks).
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Forza Horizon 3 crashing when loading (after selecting “continue”).
  • As a result of low usage, Screen Saver functionality has been disabled in themes. Screen Saver functionality in Group Policies, Control Panel, and Sysprep is now deprecated but continues to be functional. Lock screen features and policies are preferred.

I just noticed on the current build (16257), that, when you open Cortana, there is a new icon that shows under "Notebook", called "Devices" Clicking on it allows you to setup a Cortana powered speaker.

I haven't been home lately to notice (working way to much) so when I get the chance, before I update, I will take a look.

Quote
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Asphalt 8 not accepting input in recent flights.

  • We fixed an issue in XAML resulting in text animations appearing slightly blurry in the last flight until the animation had stopped (for example, when loading the main page of Settings).
  • We fixed an issue resulting in progress wheels on certain websites in Microsoft Edge unexpectedly moving out of place during their rotation.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpected change in mouse sensitivity in the last flight for PCs using non-default display scaling.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the taskbar being unexpectedly thick if you booted up the PC while plugged in to an external monitor with a different DPI.

Reminder hat if you have joined the "Skip ahead" branch, that it is normal that you have no further Insider build since Build 16273. While Redstone 3 (Fall Creators Update) is going through its polishing stages, Redstone 4 is in development. Once something is ready, it will be delivered to those who picked the "Skip ahead" branch. Ultimately, both branch with be merged again.

I don't know... this is the first build for skip ahead. The 2 last build that you got I didn't get.

And the apps are behind as well. I still don't have the new look of the Store app, despite released to the public.

'Skip ahead' is, so far 'Stay Behind'

New Build for Fast Ring (RS3) - Build: 16281

Just bug fixes (as expected):

Quote
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Train Simulator 2017 failing to launch on recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to tab into an open PDF in Microsoft Edge after interacting with the any of the Microsoft Edge window elements using mouse.
  • We fixed an issue where the Windows Defender Security Center app icon was missing in taskbar when the app was open, as well in Start’s all apps list. You will also notice that the icon is now un-plated in the taskbar.
  • We’ve made some adjustments to address an issue resulting in sudden and brief CPU spikes where you couldn’t move your mouse. If you’ve encountered this, please try it in this new build and let us know if your experience has improved.
  • We fixed an issue where minimized app windows on mixed-DPI monitor setups might end up drawing offscreen after your PC resumed from sleep.
  • We fixed an issue where if you changed your display language preference to something other than the machine’s default then any app which did not take an update while also getting the updated language resource package from the Store would end up continuing to display its tile in Start in that default language rather than the new language displayed within the app and other system UI.

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16288 for PC

Quote

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16288 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring only (not Skip Ahead). As we mentioned previously, we are now at the point of the development cycle for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update where our focus is now on stabilization for release to the world. This means that we are releasing new builds to Insiders more quickly and that these builds will include mostly bug fixes. You’ll notice that this build continues to include a bunch of good bug fixes Insiders will enjoy.

On Build 16288, you will notice that the watermark at the lower right-hand corner of the desktop has disappeared. You will also see that the OS now reports as “Version 1709” which is the official version number for the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update release. However, this is NOT the final build as we’re not done yet. We’re just now beginning the phase of checking in final code to prepare for the final release. So we will have more builds to release to Windows Insiders between now and then. And the desktop watermark may re-appear in these builds.

We are also releasing Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 15250 to Insiders in the Fast ring.

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

Windows Shell Improvements

  • We fixed an issue resulting in the Facebook Messenger app failing to accept the enter key when sending messaging in recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue where the “New” text displayed under the names of newly installed apps in Start wouldn’t go away after launching the app.
  • We fixed an issue where using the letters in Start to jump to different locations in the alphabet wasn’t consistently working in the last few flights.
  • We fixed an issue where local app search in Cortana failed to return the expected app if the user profile directory contained non-ASCII characters.
  • We fixed an issue where pressing WIN + X would sometimes not show the accelerator key underlines.
  • We fixed an issue where when the People button was present in taskbar, and toast-only banners (for example from Outlook 2016) were sent, the Action Center badge counter would become inaccurate.
  • We fixed a bug from recent flights where upon unlock you’d be bombarded with any notifications that occurred while your PC was locked. If you’d like to review notifications received while your PC was locked, they can be found in the Action Center

Input Improvements

  • We fixed an issue where pressing delete when using the full touch keyboard layout in UWP apps would input a period rather than deleting a character.
  • We fixed an issue where the Pinyin IME’s emoji picker wouldn’t load in recent flights.
  • We fixed a tablet mode issue where launching the touch keyboard in UWP apps might sometimes take multiple taps on the edit field before the keyboard would come up.
  • We fixed an issue where when using the Chinese (Simplified) handwriting panel InputPersonalization.exe could get into a state where it would unexpectedly have a continually high CPU usage.
  • We fixed an issue with the handwriting panel where the “&123” and Emoji button didn’t work when the device was in portrait orientation.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to turn on the Japanese IME after the focus was moved from a UWP (like Sticky Notes) to another app and back.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in a stutter when selecting long strings in certain single line editable text boxes (for example when naming favorites in Microsoft Edge).
  • We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to type text via the touch keyboard into Internet Explorer when using the Japanese, Chinese, or Korean keyboards.
  • We fixed an issue where the Dayi and Array IMEs couldn’t input Chinese characters in certain apps in recent flights when using the touch keyboard.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

  • We fixed an issue where the tab preview for PDFs was just black with two white stripes.
  • We fixed an issue where the first time you used Ctrl + F in a tab the search box wouldn’t get focus. We also fixed an issue where after clicking the Find on Page text box you might not be able to type in the address bar.
  • We fixed an issue where sometimes the Hub would appear to open twice when you clicked the icon.
  • We fixed an issue where typing a web address into the address bar from the New Tab and Start Page and would sometimes clear the text and not result in any page navigation.
  • We fixed an issue where Ctrl + Click on a link in a PDF wouldn’t open the link in a new tab.
  • We fixed an issue where “Open with previous pages” wouldn’t recover tabs if the tabs had been dragged between frames prior to closing Microsoft Edge.
  • We fixed an issue which could result in uploads failing on some sites, such as Behance.net.
  • We fixed an issue where website tooltips could end up displaying behind the Microsoft Edge window after opening a link in new tab in the background.
  • We fixed an issue resulting copy/paste and the print dialog not working for those using the updated Youtube.com website design.
  • We’ve updated editable fields in PDFs to now have a subtle color to help indicate that they’re editable.

  • We fixed an issue from recent flights where Alt + D wouldn’t bring input focus to the address bar when certain keyboards were active.

  • We fixed an issue where your PC might not go to sleep automatically after remoting into it and signing out of the remote session.

Other fixes and improvements

  • We fixed an issue where Settings could crash if a Bluetooth device was turned off while the Bluetooth settings page was open.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in some Insiders experiencing an issue where Store apps would begin to fail to activate after being launched a few times.
  • We fixed an issue where if the lock screen slideshow was set to a OneDrive folder containing offline-only images, these pictures would all be downloaded to the PC while the PC was locked (going through each picture). These pictures will now be skipped.
  • If you’ve encountered an issue where Spotlight appears stuck on a particular image, we’ve added logic such that it should now reset after at most 7 days.

No downtime for Hustle-As-A-Service,
Dona <3

Quote

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16362 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring who have opted in to Skip Ahead only. Insiders who joined Skip Ahead will continue to receive builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch which has transitioned to RS4 which is the release that will come after the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (RS3). Because we are just beginning development for RS4, Insiders shouldn’t expect to see a lot of big changes or new features just yet. Our focus remains getting the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ready for release!

What’s new in Build 16362

Improved Boot Experience

Use sign-in info to apply settings after a restart or update: Building on our work seen in Build 16251, if you stay on the lock screen for a few seconds before signing in, you will now see your lock screen personalization (such as Windows Spotlight, and/or status information from Cortana, Calendar, Mail, and more). As always, you can customize your lock screen experience using the settings listed under Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.

Opt-out: Under the Privacy section of the Sign-in options page of your Settings, you can disable and re-enable using the option show below:

Under the Privacy section of the Sign-in options page of your Settings, you can disable and re-enable using this option.

Note: The feature is only available on PCs that are not managed by enterprises. This includes home PCs that are sync’d to enterprise (work, school, etc.) email.

Narrator Improvements:

You can now select the desired audio channel for Narrator speech output! Simply go to Settings > Ease of Access > Narrator and you’ll find a new option to do this at the top of the “Sounds you hear” section

You can now select the desired audio channel for Narrator speech output!

Windows Shell Improvements

  • We fixed an issue where minimized app windows on mixed-DPI monitor setups might end up drawing offscreen after your PC resumed from sleep.
  • We fixed an issue where if you changed your display language preference to something other than the machine’s default then any app which did not take an update while also getting the updated language resource package from the Store would end up continuing to display its tile in Start in that default language rather than the new language displayed within the app and other system UI.
  • We’ve updated the Action Center to now use “AM” / “PM” when indicating timestamp with the 12hr clock format, rather than “a” / “p”.
  • We fixed an issue where using the letters in Start to jump to different locations in the alphabet wasn’t consistently working in the last few flights.
  • We fixed an issue where when the People button was present in taskbar, and toast-only banners (for example from Outlook 2016) were sent, the Action Center badge counter would become inaccurate.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

  • We fixed an issue resulting in multiple apps crashing in the previous flight if you tried to log into the app using Facebook.
  • We fixed an issue where pasting an image to Imgur.com from your clipboard wouldn’t work.
  • We fixed an issue which could result in uploads failing on some sites, such as Behance.net.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in drag and drop onto websites intermittently not working.
  • We fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge would crash after choosing to pin certain websites to Start.
  • We fixed an issue where a tab could get in a state where it displayed a tab preview thumbnail even though your mouse wasn’t hovering over the tab.
  • We fixed an issue where website tooltips could end up displaying behind the Microsoft Edge window after opening a link in new tab in the background.
  • We fixed an issue for certain websites where after watching an embedded video full screen then using Esc to return to the page would result in the video controller no longer being visible.
  • We’ve updated editable fields in PDFs to now have a subtle color to help indicate that they’re editable.

Gaming Improvements

  • We fixed an issue resulting in Ghost Recon: Wildlands not starting in recent flights since the Easy anti-cheat component wouldn’t load.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Train Simulator 2017 failing to launch on recent flights.

Input Improvements

  • We fixed an issue where the Pinyin IME’s emoji picker wouldn’t load in recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue where the Emoji Panel’s tooltips could become mixed up.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in precision touchpads potentially dropping gestures after coming out of sleep.
  • We’ve made some adjustments to address an issue resulting in sudden and brief CPU spikes where you couldn’t move your mouse. If you’ve encountered this, please try it in this new build and let us know if your experience has improved.
  • We fixed an issue where when using the Chinese (Simplified) handwriting panel InputPersonalization.exe could get into a state where it would unexpectedly have a continually high CPU usage.

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

  • We’ve updated the Run dialog so when hold Ctrl + Shift then click OK or press enter, it will run that task or program elevated, just like how it works in Cortana.
  • We fixed an issue where the Windows Defender Security Center app icon was missing in taskbar when the app was open, as well in Start’s all apps list. You will also notice that the icon is now un-plated in the taskbar.
  • We fixed the issue where USBhub.sys was causing spontaneous reboots due to bugchecks (GSOD).
  • We fixed an issue where the battery flyout might incorrectly show “PC not charging” while the device was changing in recent builds.
  • We fixed an issue where fonts using shortcuts would become unusable and disappear from the Fonts folder.
  • We fixed an issue where upgrading to recent flights would fail if you had a speech for a secondary language installed.
  • We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in some Insiders experiencing an issue where Store apps would begin to fail to activate after being launched a few times.
  • We fixed an issue where your PC might not go to sleep automatically after remoting into it and signing out of the remote session.

That last insider build on Skip ahead has broken my SP3. I had to a whole recovery. It refused to boot from Windows 10 Setup from USB flash drive. I had to get my HDD, make a 8GB partition as FAT32, download the Surface Pro 3 recovery files, put it them on my 8GB partition on my HDD, then plug that on my SP3 and recover it. And then, only now, I boot into Windows 10, update from the initial Windows 10 release (as this is what my SP3 came with), and install everything. I am waiting for a new build before having joined by to the Skip Ahead Insider Program, let alone the Insider Program. Just today I noticed this: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_repair-insiderplat_pc/build-162881-recover-a-wont-boot-surface-pro-3/2a08fc01-1204-4b71-a627-b844b5fc280a?tm=1505851860561&auth=1

Too late, but I recall not being able to boot on from my trusty USB flash drive. Now, after the recovery, I can boot from it contentiously... same USB flash drive... same ISO extracted to it. Very strange. (It was booting from it, but the screen only flicker dark gray a few times and booted in normal broken Windows 10 on the SSD inside).

No issue on my desktop, if anyone wonders.

After hours new build for non-Skip Ahead:

This build contains critical fixed, such as the fix that affected Surface Pro 3 users where their system would turn non-bootable, Dutch language issue, and upgrade build failure on certain system configurations.

Quote
  • This build has the fix for the bug that was causing some Surface Pro 3 devices to end up in a “unbootable” state where the Windows OS will not load and it appears to be stuck on a “spinning dots” screen. After installing this build, Surface Pro 3 devices should no longer get into this state. If you have a Surface Pro 3 in a bad state – follow the instructions on this forum post to get back up and running.
  • We fixed an issue on Dutch builds where explorer could go into a crash loop if an app-requested downloads notification popped up from OneDrive.
  • We fixed an issue where expand.exe couldn’t expand CABs that contained Japanese characters in the file name.
  • We fixed a race condition that could result in window content being transparent (but showing the window frame) or stale after unlocking your desktop.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders seeing error 0x800B010C when attempting to upgrade to the last few flights.

Windows Store is being re-branded and possibly much more.

Windows Store has been re-branded to "Microsoft Store" in Windows 10 Fall creators Update pre-release Build 16291.

The name is not the only thing that's changed. The app icon has also changed to the Microsoft logo on the Store bag.

Screenshot%20(14)_0.png?itok=m81oAooR

Microsoft currently has an online store called "Microsoft Store" and thus it is speculated that Microsoft could sell more than just software with the upcoming changes to the "Microsoft Store" app.

It could mean that customers could potentially purchase Microsoft Hardware (or Software) directly from Windows 10.

Quote

The rebrand is currently in testing with Insiders, and outside of the rebrand itself nothing else appears to have changed in the app. Microsoft may be planning to start selling more than just digital content in the built-in Windows 10 Store app, hence its rebrand to "Microsoft Store."

Microsoft already has an online Store which it calls "Microsoft Store" too, where it sells software and hardware from first and third-party partners. It wouldn't be surprising to see Microsoft begin moving that content in to the new Microsoft Store app too at some point.

Still don't plan to use it, but Microsoft Store is a more descriptive and noticeable name than Windows Store.

I would consider using it if their prices where reasonable.  But when you can got to a physical shop down the road and buy their wares cheaper it's not much incentive.   It's costs about $20 more for a digital copy of win 10 from the MS store than to buy a retail USB pack from the local.

Nothing like changing the name and logo so people would trust you.

Microstore. Microstore sounds so much easier on the mouth. The naming department is being run by entities with no mouths.

Probably because there's already a couple stores, called "MicroStore", around the world.

Moved to the Windows 10 Insider thread. Nothing is official..

Please keep Windows 10 Insider branding experimentation, feature experimentation, OS modifications, and other unofficially announced feature and changed to the Windows Insider thread. Windows 10 Insider program has a lot of movement. Many of which are A/B testing (heck I don't have the new Store rebrand on both insider PC, and some things I have that others don't). Many things don't stick or not in the current presented state. Basically, experimentation is made and feedback is collected and a decision is made upon it.

To keep the Tech News section clean and not filled with, what will end up with, a lot of miss information of final products, we are keeping this kind of news outside of it. This applies to any software and game in development phases. Make a thread on it on the appropriate forum section and discuss there, or use an existing one related to the topic. Once an official statement is made, then you can go ahead and post in the Tech News section.

I know that many things are very exciting, but basically, I don't want to create confusion among readers of the Tech News section. Like: "Here is this feature it does this and that", and ends up being different in the final product, cut out for later, completely changed, or dropped due to negative feedback from Insiders. Now, if the feature is official (ie: Microsoft talked about it, implemented it and nothing is mentioned of any sort of testing/experimentation), then sure go ahead.

Thank you for your understanding.
