Ads are totally fine with me. I only have adblock to block out some more nefarious stuff and to remove annoying images and elements. It's disabled for YouTube and places with unobtrusive ads like the forum.

People are still scarred by PC STDs from the pre adblock days. No one wants to see seizure ads, feminine products if they are a guy, shady popups that infect you or randomly seeing a dick or vag from an adult ad. This is why people adblock, because advertisers are clueless when it comes to serving ads to people. This is on them, not the consumer. If you want to win favour, calling potential viewers a dick isn't going to win them over. You have to be polite and put the message out there that you would appreciate it if people didn't have adblock enabled when viewing your content. Otherwise, you may as well be calling a brick wall a phallic object.

Tell you what, in your videos, you could do a short little disclaimer/message in the beginning in a friendly tone that you would appreciate it if they disabled adblock when viewing your content because it's a source of income for you.

I think websites over-advertise and that's why so many people have gone to adblock, especially the video ads on youtube. Of course in some places I have it disabled, but youtube is not one.

Adblock is a great piece of software that helps users avoid all the low-quality-high-quantity ads that flood so many websites with stuff we don't want to see. It's too easy to gain adspace and this leads to "Congratulations! You are the 9999 visitor to X website, click here for >9000 credits/free keylogger". I don't appreciate 3 popups every time I click a link and then having to close every "Idiot Casino, Enter Now", "Click here for Viagra", "Here, have some genitals pop up on your screen because fuck you we want money", etc. spamming.

Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate linustechtips filtering who they let advertise and actually testing them for themselves, this also leads to more humourous and human ads that I really don't mind watching. Adblock also has a "Disable on this site" feature which I'm sure a lot of us use on linustechtips and twitch (not for ad spammers though of course).

I'd suggest that if you want to make your online presence a serious one as a primary income source, then diversify and humanise your monetisation (e.g. affiliate) methods rather than complaining when people don't want to be harassed by ads.

I use AdBlock for ONE reason. Volume. As in sound volume. The volume on ads are usually (for me at least) waaaaaay higher than the volume in the actual video I want to watch. That means turning down the volume before going to a new video then turning it up as soon as I can skip the ad and that's so fucking annoying. Worst ever was that Sparta game whatever the hell it was called. I disabled Adblock for a month or so a couple of months back and encountered that ad (the sparta-whatever game/facebook game/mobile game) and it felt like I almost blew out my speakers so I said fuck that.

<video>

I see that video linked everywhere so I'm gonna deconstruct it.

If you haven't played Diablo 3 yet, get the console version.

I haven't played the console versions but I've heard that it suffers from major frame rate drops in certain areas (dipping down to 30 or below), especially in the expansion pack.

This does not really have anything to do with AdBlock but anyone recommending the console version of a game over the PC version worries me, especially when there are reports of users experiencing issues with it.

I'm going to start this video off by saying this, look if you use AdBlock I don't care. That's fine, use AdBlock.

Well you seem to care quite a bit since you made a video where you "rage" about AdBlock.

Shout out to bla bla bla

God damn, how many shoutouts and plugs is this video going to contain? He had a sponsor in the beginning (not including the banner ad, the video ad and so on), then he plugged some store that gave him Diablo 3 and now he is doing shout outs.

One and a half minutes in and I am already pretty annoyed at this guy.

The kids who created adblock.

That's just a cheap way to try to demean someone. Calling them a kid. The creator of the AdBlock (Chrome) extension is 33 years old. Not a kid by any stretch of the imagination.

[A bunch of stuff about buying ads about Adblock]

Yep, I agree that buying ads about adblock is kind of stupid. However, it's a free market so as long as they pay for the ad space they can put whatever they want there (as long as the website agrees to it).

I think it's a silly idea, but I am not going to tell them to "kiss my ass" or anything like that.

The most amazing thing about that video, is that those fools are proving precisely why ads needs to exist.

For corporations or anybody to display that they have a product or service that people may want, they need to advertise that product or service. Just like you fools are doing.

I agree with what he says, but ads are actually not that much about displaying a product. More often than not, ads are there to spread brand recognition. You don't see an ad for a dish washer tablet and think "oh I am going to buy that because it looks good!". What you subconsciously do is see the ad and then when you are in the store picking between brand A and B, you are going to pick brand A because you recognize the brand. Ads aren't (usually) about making people want to buy things, they are about making people recognize your product and feel more confident picking that over some other brand which they don't recognize as much.

*silly voice* I love the Internet without ads, imagine an ad free Internet *silly voice*

Again, that's just a cheap way to try to demean someone, repeating what they said in a silly voice.

How do you think the sites that you enjoy, that you go to, exists. What do you think keeps those sites afloat. You fucking tools.

Well let's see.

I visit Wikipedia which do not have ads, instead they ask for donations.

I go to a bunch of stores (Amazon, Swedish retailers etc) which makes money from the products they sell.

I go to LinusTechTips which lets you donate money.

A certain 18+ website I go to lets users runs a program they call "H@H" and when you run that, your computer gets added to a CDN. You can manage how much bandwidth you wish to contribute and you earn a virtual currency used to buy perks for the website or trade with other users for services (such as translation works, bounties on galleries and so on). Even though image hosting is pretty demanding, this site's main server actually only serves something like 2% of the total visitors. The other 98% is served by the notes in the H@H network.

Another forum I visit has captcha for each message. Each time someone fills in a captcha you get paid a really tiny amount. That's not even close to enough to actually run the server but you can also buy the captcha away for a yearly fee.

Some reviewers *wink wink* pushes people to use their affiliate codes when buying the products they review.

Of course a lot of sites I visit relies on ads, but the idea that the Internet would just suddenly disappear and become a wasteland if ads disappeared is just simply not true. There are many ways to monetize content, including my favorite which is non intrusive ads.

When I visit a new website I turn AdBlock off to see how their ads are. If I find them too annoying I turn AdBlock on again.

Let's take a look at Anandtech vs TweakTown. Two big computer review sites.

post-216-0-79241500-1410521987_thumb.jpgpost-216-0-20696900-1410521993_thumb.jpg

If Anandtech can get by with those a smaller number of ads then TweakTown should be able to get by with less ads as well.

Not only do Anand have fewer ads, but their ads are also far more relevant (some ads on Tweak Town are about forest fires, political candidates etc), not as annoying (For example some on TweakTown plays audio) and Tweak Town hads popups! Chrome blocked 3 popups when visited the site.

On top of all this, Tweak Town has a bunch of crap that follows you around as you scroll down. Both on the left and right site of the screen, and when you get close to the button you also get a crappy "recommended articles" as well which is there to make you read more articles on their site.

I block ads on one of these sites, and allow ads on the other. Can you guess which I block?

People use AdBlock because they are fed up with sites like Tweak Town. Not all ads are bad. I use AdBlock Plus and they actually allow ads that meet their criteria for "acceptable ads". The criterias can be found on their website and they are completely transparent about which ones they let through.

These exception rules are on by default, but you can turn them off if you don't even want "acceptable ads". Only 25% of AdBlock Plus users are against ads completely, and I bet not even that 25% has turned the feature off. So maybe 10% of AdBlock Plus users actually block all ads. The other 90% only block ads which are not deemed acceptable.

Do you think that large websites like YouTube and Netflix and other places are just gonna let AdBlock run wild if it becomes that much of an issue? No they are going to block the fucking software.

There is already a website that does it. Hulu.com does it. If you have AdBlock running, they will not let you watch a TV show. You can't do shit on their website unless you have AdBlock disabled, or any kind of ad prevention software. If it's enabled, you can't use Hulu.

You don't think that if becomes that big of a problem, that you won't see like YouTube and other websites following suit. You think that they'll just let one piece of software destroy their profits?

To this I will quote Dr Dildo Faggins:

*Sarcastic voice* Because you know, not fixing the problems that are making people want to use AdBlock, is obviously the solution to the problem. *Sarcastic voice*

And this is one thing I fail to understand about people who attack AdBlock. They have this fantastic belief that one day a company like Google is going to step in and stop people from using the Add-ons, but doesn't this just encourage people to use AdBlock while they still fucking can?

This is also mainly used by people who fail to realize that there are massive problems with online advertisements. One being the fact that almost every single YouTuber enables them. It's no longer just professional content creators. The more recent openness of the YouTube partner program has made it almost impossible to escape them.

In a strange way online advertisements are killing themselves, and pointing the finger at people who are using AdBlockers is like a form of denial at this point. Because admitting that  there is a problem with the advertisement system is like biting the hand feeds you, or more appropriately, the hand that pays you.

On a side note, AdBlock (the ones doing the campaign) and AdBlock Plus (the one I am using) are two different companies.

I think AdBlock Plus are doing the right thing and I disagree with what AdBlock is doing.

Personally I don't find ads annoying. In Chrome I've set flash plugins to be disabled unless I tell it not to, which covers most of the annoying, flashy, in your face adverts.

The YouTube ones I don't mind so much. I usually get 15 second ads and skippable ads. I've only encountered one 1:30 ad that I had to watch first, but you just have to refresh the page and the video starts anyway....

I really don't see the problems that people have with adverts. Just ignore them.

Actually this doesn't have much to do with adblock, sure a percentage of those views might have been from adblock users, but a monetized view only counts when someone clicks an ad on your video OR watched the whole preroll ad without skipping. Meaning even if someone isn't using adblock, all they have to do is not click an ad or press skip on the preroll ad (which most people do).

Actually my videos have an even bigger disparity, so don't worry about it too much.
