[Finished] The Renewal - 1080mm rad, 6700k, Z170 Asrock OC Formula, 980 Ti Matrix

Lays

I think I could be wrong but because of the kick ass fans on the lightning it should be fine a friend of mine has two gigabyte 3X 970's right on top of each other and they have been fine so far

When I installed a second 7970 3-slot video card my temps went up from 50-60C to 95C. Considering that 290x's TDP is even higher, I guess that it will hit it's max.

Overclocked right now whilst gaming it hits around 75,with around 50-60% fan speed, so I think adding a second one the top card would hit 90 maybe with 80-90% fan speed. Not sure though.

With my 780 SLI I used to have, adding the second card made the top one around 10 degrees warmer, I'd imagine this may have similar effects but maybe a few degrees more.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think this is the best picture I've gotten so far:   There's still a little bit to do, if I do watercool, it will be dependant on how much money I get for xmas.

You should do a custom water cooling, not sure though if there are blocks for the Lightning

I won't be doing the sleeving I think it looks tacky imo... I already have a block for my lightning.

I discussed earlier what would be happening if I do my custom loop, but I may buy an r5 if I decide to do a custom loop so I can use two 360 rads with some fine tuning hopeully.

Get a Corsair case or something, a build like that needs to be shown off "properly". Or the Phanteks ones

If he gets a corsair case i'll be seriously disappointed

Fractal define makes corsair cases look silly, they're much better cases

have you considered removing the plastic tray piece that is there for the HDD racks?  its not overly hard to do, and it would make the aesthetic a little better.  just a thought

I'm most likely going to buy an R5 when it's released, or a different case (Haven't decided yet) so I figured it'd be best not to go through with the rest of my plans of removing the optical bays + doing some other modding to this case, as I'll probably be re-selling it soon.

I've been trying to decide what case I will be getting, because if I do finally decide to watercool, I want a lot of rad space for future expandability + nice and low fan RPM speeds.

There's loads of options, but I'm unsure what I will be getting, as my case "criteria" is quite strict.

I like the Air 540, but it wouldn't let me do thick radiators without problems and I've have to figure out where to put the res, I like the r4/r5, but the window is to small. I like the Phanteks entho, but I feel it's to big for my needs, and I don't like the weird HDD bay cover thing like the H440 has.

The 750D is ok, but having used a 900D previously, I don't know if I'd use a 750D, as it's probably just as flimsy.

I am kind of thinking of a corsair air 540, I can put a thick rad in the front & top apparently without much hassle.  (Only 45-55mm it looks like)

Apparently you can fit fans inbetween the case and the fan-grill in the front, if this indeed works, I'll probably get one. (Because then I can use a thicker radiator)

I have some looking around to do though, to see what I want to do.

I'm unsure about painting one, I'm not the best painter ever and I don't have the money to pay someone to do it third party.

I've not seen one in person but seems that you can fit the fans like that.

Also you don't really need to be a pro painter just tape up the bits you don't wanna paint and go. You can always practice on cardboard etc anyway might be a fun little side project.

Hello everybody, welcome to my new build log!

Background:

I built my first PC last year, and it's been a learning experience ever since, getting more and more into it. This is definitely a great hobby! Since building it in March of 2013, I changed components around, and eventually ended up watercooling with a 900D.

I'll be reusing a few parts from my old build log, and purchasing new ones as well.  I figured the title is well suited to the contents of the build!

I never actually decided to finish it, I figured I'd wait until this build to take my time and do everything properly!

Since building the last PC in a 900D, I really didn't need much of anything I had, some of the things I really didn't need and shouldn't of purchased, but I had tons of money to spend so I didn't care much.  I've become a bit more knowledgeable about PC's since then and now know I don't need a 6 core 12 thread CPU, nor dual 780's for my everyday gaming needs. (Although it was fun having those things)

This build will be a much smaller rig, but not lacking in performance whatsoever with expand-ability if I want in the future.

Here's a few pictures of the old build:

dgjNPht.jpg

N88Z7kW.jpg

Now I have a nice little R4, and have sold most of my old parts, hopefully I'll be able to grab a new desk from IKEA during this build log as well, and post some setup pictures!

Next update should be later today, I have to go take some pictures!

PS: Some of the future updates may take awhile, as I'm still waiting for someone to buy my CPU + Mobo in the classifieds, the money from that will pay for my custom loop.

Why did you decide to air cool your new rig?

Current PC build: [CPU: Intel i7 8700k] [GPU: GTX 1070 Asus ROG Strix] [Ram: Corsair LPX 32GB 3000MHz] [Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A] [SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 500GB primary + Samsung 860 Evo 1TB secondary] [PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 750w 80plus] [Monitors: Dual Dell Ultrasharp U2718Qs, 4k IPS] [Case: Fractal Design R5]

I'll be watercooling it eventually when I get the money, but I think I'll be finishing my setup first, since I get more benefit out of a new keyboard, second monitor, and stuff like that.

My Sennheiser HD800's show up any minute now from the post office, I know this isn't technically related to my build log, but as I said before, I'd keep you guys updated on my setup as well!

I'll do a review and also send some pics in the build log.

I got my shelves set up for my PC part boxes, and my headphones in the picture as well.

My Mom said she'd help me finish painting my base-boards under my desk later this week, coz I'll need help getting everything all taped up so I don't derp and paint my carpet.
